At average speed, one can do about 60 trips to the nature altar via the Abyss per hour, using the Wilderness sword or Amulet of Glory to teleport back to Edgeville, and using the tool belt items to mine through the rocks in the abyss. It is also possible to use TokKul-Zo to bank, and then teleport back to Edgeville.

The time it takes to bank can be significantly reduced if quick presets are used. It is possible to include your familiar's inventory in the preset, making it possible to fill your inventory, pouches, and body in a single go. With an Abyssal titan, the action bar below allows you to withdraw your preset, fill the pouches/body and then withdraw the preset a second time. If you set your preset to #1, you can press 1-7 to withdraw the preset and fill all of the pouches. You need to set your familiar action to withdraw for this to work properly. If you have the combined catalyst fragment, its advised to include it in your inital preset as it has a chance to prevent pouch degredation, and use a secondary preset for the abyss trip. This is especially valuable with Massive pouch. If you are using a massive pouch, its recommended that you fill it directly from the bank on the second preset load as the catalyst fragement will still be equipped. If you are using a shield, include it in the second preset, otherwise you can leave the catalyst equipped and use a single preset. You can also equip a Phoenix necklace if you want added protection from player killers. Be sure to regularly repair the pouches as the giant pouch degrades after 12 uses. You can repair your pouches for free at the Dark mage in the center of the Abyss. Alternatively you can cast Repair rune pouch on your pouches, making them last five times as long.

The Mage of Zamorak is located in low-level wilderness, near the source of the River Lum. This is a fairly safe area, but there may be player killers so it is advised not to take expensive items on the trips to the abyss. Remember that if you use a demonic skull anyone can attack you, regardless of their combat level. Inside the abyss the creatures will be aggressive and can do fair amounts of damage. See Abyss#Strategy for more information on how to navigate the abyss. Once inside, enter the nature rift and craft the essence in your inventory and your pouches. Teleport back to Edgeville with Amulet of Glory or Wilderness Sword and repeat.

Should you die, your pouches can be retrieved from the dark mage in the abyss, or if using an Abyssal titan they will be in your familiar when you resummon it. You can reclaim your Wilderness sword from Mr Ex(1 & 4) Mandrith(2) or Quercus(3). You can reclaim your catalyst fragment from Relomia, Emissary of Sliske in Draynor.

If you have completed Hero's Welcome you are able to make 5% more runes, this stacks with double runes effectively giving you 10% more runes, or 20% with powerbursts. You also have a chance of receiving magical thread (currently worth 140,241 coins each) while crafting runes via the Abyss. Magical thread is used to make Large rune pouch/Small rune pouch. Thread received is based upon the number of Pure Essence used, not output. A demonic skull increases the Runecrafting XP to 3.5 times the normal amount and also increases the chance of receiving magical thread.

Completing the Wilderness Tasks is helpful. All versions of the Wilderness sword provide infinite free teleports to Edgeville while the Wilderness sword 3 and above give a chance for the Mage of Zamorak to teleport the player directly to the centre of the Abyss, thus saving time and further increasing the profit per hour. In addition, the Infinity ethereal outfit can store 12 essence for a profit of 3,731,389.5 coins per hour.

Using the Archaeology relic powers Nexus Mod and Pouch Protector allow the player to always teleport to the center of the Abyss on the north side of the inner ring, near the nature altar portal, while the Pouch Protector power eliminates degradation of rune pouches. With practice and concentration, using the bank preset strategy explained above, trips can be made to the nature altar in about 30 seconds.

Runecrafting potions are also useful at lower levels. Although players cannot craft triple nature runes, boosts can allow double nature runes to be crafted at as low as level 79.

The following table shows how each familiar/potion/pouch affects hourly profit:
