Key (Treasure Trails) detail.png

A key is an item needed to unlock a chest or drawer during a Treasure Trail.

There will be a clue telling you where to get it. The key is a drop only when carrying the clue scroll. It disappears when used to open the chest or drawer. Keys are non-tradeable objects, specific to the player who finds them. They are used on medium level treasure trails.

It is possible to obtain more than one key by killing two monsters before picking one up. However, after taking a clue from the chest/drawer, the key won't open it again, and the player gets a message The chest <(or drawer)> is locked. Keys obtained this way from the same clue will still remain in the bank; however, keys obtained from different clues will not stack. If the key is not dropping from the monster then make sure to check your bank since you can only have 1 key at a time.

The requirement to get the key for the steps can be skipped by purchasing the 'Way of the foot-shaped key' upgrade from Zaida for 500 Treasure Trail Points.

  • ninja 12 October 2020 (Update):
    • You can now purchase the 'Way of the Foot-Shaped Key' from Zaida's Treasure Trails Reward Shop, an ancient technique that will allow you to complete medium clue steps that normally require a key without one (this costs 500 Treasure Trail Points).
    • The key which is required for the Varrock Dig Site Exam Centre chest for medium clues can now be dropped by both male and female barbarians.
