Ironman Mode/Strategies/Invention

From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape
Jump to: navigation, search

Invention is a complex skill with a lot of rewards. However, obtaining components can be difficult and there are many different perk combinations.

Training the skill[edit | edit source]

Note that every single unlock can be unlocked early using invention potions (+3), super invention potions (+5) and extreme invention potions (+1 per 150,000 experience up to +17, see page).

Disassembling augmented weapons[edit | edit source]

Completing River of Blood grants Sunspear, an augmentable weapon for all 3 styles that only costs 600,000 to reclaim. Early on, it is by far the best way to train starting at level 27 (and up to that level if you have money to spare). Cheap alternatives, useful for getting to level 27 are:

These can also be disassembled later, but sunspear is still the most versatile easy to obtain weapon. Additionally, any duplicate Dragon rider lances, Saradomin Godswords and such can usually be safely disassembled.

Disassembling augmented armour[edit | edit source]

Once you can augment armour, some armour is easier to get than others and makes a good candidate for disassembly:

For most other non-degrade-to-dust armour, only disassemble duplicate pieces. Note that Nex's armour drops and the tier 90 armour sets are used in the creation of tier 92 armour, but all other duplicate armour pieces can safely be disassembled after levelling it to 10.

Disassembling augmented tools[edit | edit source]

Various tools can be mass-produced for disassembly at 22 Invention:

Other augmented tools require dragon as a base or tool seeds and are better used with equipment siphons or crystal tool siphons.

Equipment siphons[edit | edit source]

Equipment siphon.png: RS3 Inventory image of Equipment siphonEquipment siphons (27 Invention) drain the level of equipment back to 1, but give the same experience as dissambling at 2 levels lower without destroying the items. Due to the difficulty of obtaining components, on ironman it is considered best to siphon at level 12 (rather than level 9, which is more efficient if you have a lot of siphons). Siphon any non-duplicate non-degrade-to-dust piece.

For degrade-to-dust equipment, siphon it when it is just about to run out of charge. It won't stop working until it runs out of charge and hits level 10.

Crystal tool siphon.png: RS3 Inventory image of Crystal tool siphonCrystal tool siphons can be useful for siphoning crystal tools, including mattocks, hatchets and pickaxes. They give more experience.

Obtaining materials[edit | edit source]

The primary obstacle to training invention, making devices and getting the best perks is getting the right materials. This part details recommended sources for each type of material.

Important shops[edit | edit source]

Most of these restock daily or too slow to buy constantly:

Basic parts[edit | edit source]

Basic parts are used in devices. They are obtained from disassembling items in high numbers.

The White Knight Master Armoury is unlocked after Wanted. The best way to unlock the whole shop is in the southmost part of Taverley Dungeon. When making shield- or shortbows, it is best to string them. Get flax from the rare drop table or kingdom and use the Spin Flax spell. Shieldbows give strong components for combat dummies & weapon gizmos and shortbows give dextrous components for siphons.

Uncommon components[edit | edit source]

Uncommon components are used in devices and some perks. They can be obtained from disassembling items in lower numbers, late game they will mostly be obtained from Scavenging.pngPerk rank 4.pngScavenging 4.

Rare components[edit | edit source]

Rare components are primarily used for getting perks, but have some other uses. They can be obtained disassembling specific items and from the Scavenging.pngScavenging perk, although at a slower rate.

Note that the best way to get materials is generally to do excavation spots rather than material caches.

Recommended gizmos[edit | edit source]

This section has recommended perks to use while levelling up Invention. Note that Invention potion (3).png: RS3 Inventory image of Invention potion (3) invention potions, Super invention (3).png: RS3 Inventory image of Super invention (3) super inventions and especially Extreme invention (3).png: RS3 Inventory image of Extreme invention (3) extreme inventions will help with most perks (unless otherwise mentioned, in which case you can use the God Wars Dungeon entrance to reduce your level).

Level 1-26[edit | edit source]

In this level range you are not guaranteed to get gizmos back since the maximum item level is 5, while level 8 is required to get all gizmos back. If you have any gizmos you are prepared to lose, feel free to use them.

Level 27[edit | edit source]

Weapon gizmos[edit | edit source]

  • At this level, Scavenging.pngPerk rank 2.pngScavenging 2 is a 29% chance. It helps massively with gaining components and the main reason to not put it on weapons is to put it on armour.
  • At this level, Precise.pngPerk rank 2.pngPrecise 2 is a 30% chance without any negative perks. It is the best weapon gizmo exclusive damage perk at this point.
  • At this level, Equilibrium.pngPerk rank 2.pngEquilibrium 2 is a 19% chance. It is a little worse than precise but 2 ranks of equilibrium add more damage than 1 rank of precise.

  • Other possible perks:
Precise components.png

  • Other possible perks:

If you add scavenging to your weapon, simply use your highest combination of precise and equilibrium. If you add scavenging to your armour, try to get a rank 2 gizmo of both perks. Having 2 ranks of precise on one gizmo and 2 ranks of precise on another gizmo does not improve its rank. In general, the highest rank of a perk on all your equipment will go into effect and having multiple copies of a perk does nothing (with the exception of Efficient.pngEfficient, Enhanced Efficient.pngEnhanced Efficient and Enlightened.pngEnlightened, which only apply to a single piece of equipment).

Armour gizmos[edit | edit source]

At this level, only torso equipment can be augmented.

  • If you did not put Scavenging.pngPerk rank 2.pngScavenging 2 on your weapon, put it on armour. The chance of getting it does not change, but you need to use an armour gizmo shell.png: RS3 Inventory image of armour gizmo shellarmour gizmo shell instead of a weapon gizmo shell.png: RS3 Inventory image of weapon gizmo shellweapon gizmo shell.
  • At this level, Biting.pngPerk rank 2.pngBiting 2 is a 40% chance. It is the best non-situational dps perk that can go on armour. Biting adds similar dps as precise, but higher ranks of precise will be easier to get.
  • At this level, Crackling.pngPerk rank 2.pngCrackling 2 is a 35% chance. It is the second best non-situational dps perk that can go on armour.
  • Instead of these perks, using a number of perks that are traditionally used in combos can be beneficial, although at this level they are best used on their own. These perks are:

  • At this level, Honed.pngPerk rank 2.pngHoned 2 is a 48% chance. It is the best perk for gathering tools.
  • At this level, Breakdown.pngPerk rank 2.pngBreakdown 2 is a 43% chance. Similar to scavenging for combat, this perk helps getting components only while smithing.
  • At this level, Rapid.pngPerk rank 2.pngRapid 2 is a 43% chance. It is the best experience per hour perk for smithing and firemaking at this point, but makes smithing less afk.
  • At this level, Pyromaniac.pngPerk rank 2.pngPyromaniac 2 is a 48% chance. It is the second best experience per hour perk while firemaking.
  • At this level, Furnace (perk).pngPerk rank 2.pngFurnace 2 is a 37% chance. While limited in use for other gathering skills, it is a decent perk for training woodcutting.
  • At this level, Wise.pngPerk rank 2.pngWise 2 is a 41% chance. It gives 2% additional experience.
  • At this level, Enlightened.pngPerk rank 2.pngEnlightened 2 is a 39% chance. It gives 6% additional item experience, increasing invention experience per hour.

The wise perk is also often put on a separate weapon (such as augmented purple flowers, the augmented enhanced Excalibur or augmented crystal daggers) using a weapon gizmo, allowing for its use with any skill.

Level 45[edit | edit source]

At this level, augmented legwear is introduced. Pick another 2 armour gizmos. Around this level getting precise 3 or precise 2 equilibrium 1 is also starting to become relatively likely.

Level 49[edit | edit source]

At this level, explosive components are unlocked. Their primary use is to get the Crackling.pngPerk rank 3.pngCrackling 3 armour perk, but at the current level the rate for that is rather low. Instead, you can use them to get the Pyromaniac.pngPerk rank 4.pngPyromaniac 4 perk at a 39% rate. This is for now the strongest Firemaking firemaking perk.

Level 55[edit | edit source]

At this level Clockwork components.png: RS3 Inventory image of Clockwork componentsClockwork components are unlocked which give access to Tinker.pngPerk rank 3.pngTinker 3 at 67% at this level but cost around half a million coins per component. Tinker 3 is better than Rapid.pngPerk rank 2.pngRapid 2 for Firemaking firemaking and provides an alternative Smithing smithing perk that increases experience without any negative side effects (but at a worse rate than Rapid.pngRapid).

At this level, Explosive components.png: RS3 Inventory image of Explosive componentsExplosive components start giving Crackling.pngPerk rank 3.pngCrackling 3 at a 31% rate, a rank up from 2. While explosive components were unlocked earlier, the chance for it was fairly low and you should only go for it earlier if you have an abundance of explosive components.

Level 74[edit | edit source]

At this level the 4 primary God Wars Dungeon components are unlocked, which give a number of valuable perks. However, ancient invention is only 11 invention levels away, so it might be wise to save your components (especially Zamorak components.png: RS3 Inventory image of Zamorak componentsZamorak components, you will use a lot of those) for that. However, if you got some spare pieces of Armadyl equipment laying around now might be a good time to invest in Precise.pngPerk rank 5.pngPrecise 5. Additionally, the devoted 2 genocidal (38% at this level) is a decent mid game combo perk. The Saradomin components can be substituted for Bandos components, but if you use the mjolnir method you will end up with a surplus of Saradomin components.

Level 89[edit | edit source]

At this level it is possible to have ancient invention unlocked (see the next subsection) but you also unlock the God Wars Dungeon 2 components. Most of these are better saved for ancient invention, except planted feet.

  • Planted Feet.pngPlanted Feet is a guaranteed perk that does not benefit from ancient invention (except in combos). It is a very strong switch perk (a perk that you put on a separate weapon, which you switch to only when using the relevant ability).
  • There's also a few other perks that are worth going for if you're far from ancient invention.
    • Enhanced Devoted.pngEnhanced Devoted is by far the strongest defensive perk. At this level rank 3 is 11%.
    • At this level, Impatient.pngPerk rank 3.pngImpatient 3 is a 55% chance. It provides additional adrenaline.
    • Magic parts start becoming better than imbued components for Crackling.pngPerk rank 3.pngCrackling 3 if you didn't get that already.
    • At this level Biting.pngPerk rank 2.pngBiting 2 combo perks become somewhat reasonable (the pictured mobile combo is 5.8%).
    • Silent components for Honed.pngHoned are unlocked at level 88. Rank 4 is 74% at this level.
    • At this level, Breakdown.pngBreakdown rank 3 and 4 are a 13% and an 8% chance respectively.

Ancient invention unlocked[edit | edit source]

After unlocking ancient invention a lot of the perk meta changes and you get access to a number of new, strong perks.

Combat gizmos[edit | edit source]

  • At level 85, Scavenging.pngPerk rank 4.pngScavenging 4 is a 3.1% chance on a weapon and 3.2% on armour. However, it collects materials at twice the rate of rank 3 or four times the rate of rank 2.
  • At level 85, Precise.pngPerk rank 6.pngPrecise 6 is a 13% chance. Genocidal is a bonus at this point, but only a 2% chance.
  • At level 85, Enhanced Devoted.pngPerk rank 4.pngEnhanced Devoted 4 is a 21% chance. It cannot be combo'd with another perk.
  • At level 68, Biting.pngPerk rank 3.pngBiting 3 is a 4.8% chance. Alternatively, a number of biting 2 combos with direct components can be found on the Optimal PvM perk setup page.
  • At level 32, Impatient.pngPerk rank 4.pngImpatient 4 is a 98% chance. It provides free adrenaline at a decent rate. Note that the chance of getting nothing from your gizmo is pretty likely at this level, but this does not consume components or the empty shell.

You can use the entrance to the God Wars Dungeon to reduce your invention level.

  • At level 87, Honed.pngPerk rank 6.pngHoned 6 is a 89% chance. It is by far the best perk for gathering skills. Fortune and furnace are good secondary gathering perks.
  • At level 85, Breakdown.pngPerk rank 5.pngBreakdown 5 or 6 is a 8.1% chance, with a 4.6% chance for rank 6.
  • At level 85, Tinker.pngPerk rank 4.pngTinker 4 is a 84% chance. Tinker 4 is a good perk for afk smithing and the second best firemaking perk.
  • At level 85, Rapid.pngPerk rank 3.pngRapid 3 or 4 is a 28% chance, with a 3.9% chance for rank 4. Note that smithing and firemaking are unaffected by cheapskate, but tinker 4 and pyromaniac 6 are better for firemaking. It is the best xp perk for smithing, at the cost of making it more active.
  • At level 85, Pyromaniac.pngPerk rank 6.pngPyromaniac 6 is a 88% chance. At rank 6 it is the best firemaking perk.
  • At level 85, Imp Souled.pngPerk rank 6.pngImp Souled 6 is a 32% chance. It is primarily useful for saving porters if you have access to the ancient elven ritual shard.
  • At level 87, Refined.pngPerk rank 4.pngRefined 4 is a 77% chance. It is the best perk for Big Game Hunter and bloodwood tree woodcutting.

Level 94[edit | edit source]

Vintage components.png: RS3 Inventory image of Vintage componentsVintage components are unlocked, giving access to new decent perks.

  • In armour gizmos, these give access to Relentless.pngPerk rank 5.pngRelentless 5 and Crackling.pngPerk rank 4.pngCrackling 4. The combination of these is rather rare until extremely high level. Relentless can give extra adrenaline after using an ultimate ability, although probably is not worth using on its own.
  • In tool gizmos, these give access to Fortune.pngPerk rank 3.pngFortune 3 and Furnace (perk).pngPerk rank 4.pngFurnace 4. Fortune is a decent perk for gathering materials (but not as good as honed), and furnace is mostly used for training woodcutting or saving porters while going for the spear tip, inquisitor staff pieces or potion recipes with archaeology. If you just want fortune, timeworn components give a significantly better chance.
