Training methods[edit | edit source]

See also pay-to-play Fishing training#Methods.

Fishing for experience[edit | edit source]

1-20: Crayfish[edit | edit source]

Raw crayfish can be caught in Lumbridge or Taverley. After completing Cook's Assistant the range in Lumbridge castle provides decreased burn chance for better cooking experience.

20-70: Fly fishing[edit | edit source]

Raw trout and raw salmon can be caught in Lumbridge or Shilo village. While these provide optimal experience up to barbarian fishing, the food provided from fly fishing does not heal much. As such, starting at level 58, some players opt to change methods to something providing better healing.

70-93: Crystallise fly fishing[edit | edit source]

Crystallise combined with Light Form at the fly fishing spots provides optimal experience from level 70 to 93. However, this is an intense use of soul runes and requires The Light Within.

70-72: Barbarian fishing[edit | edit source]

Leaping trout, leaping salmon and leaping sturgeon cannot be eaten, but can be caught for experience. This is optimal between level 70 and 72 if not using crystallise.

72-93: Menafish[edit | edit source]

In the Menaphos Port district and VIP skilling area three types of fish can be caught: raw desert sole, raw catfish and raw beltfish. These heal a significant amount of health, and provide decent experience. It's advised to put Menaphos reputation onto the port district, as it can give bonuses to fishing there. Fishing in Menaphos provides optimal experience without crystallise between level 72 and 93.

93-94/99: Prifddinas Waterfall Fishing[edit | edit source]

Prifddinas Waterfall Fishing provides high experience without much activity. It is recommended to stay here at least until getting the crystal fishing rod as it provides a 5% increased catch chance. This method is also the best experience to 99 without being as active as with the next method.

94-99: Fishing Frenzy[edit | edit source]

Fishing Frenzy provides an active but fast fishing training method.

Fishing for food[edit | edit source]

1-58: Crayfish and fly fishing[edit | edit source]

These methods should still be used to reach 58 quickly.

58-68/91/97: Menafish[edit | edit source]

See above. This method gives a lot of decent food. If not supplementing cooking training with other methods, it is advised to go to swarm fishing when at 80 Cooking.

68-91/97/99: Swarm fishing[edit | edit source]

Swarm fishing provides a large variety of high level fish and is very laid-back compared to other methods. The primary drawback is that the fish caught can be too high level to cook. As such, if not supplementing cooking training with methods not reliant on fishing (such as events or clan citadel), it's recommended to wait with fishing here until 80 Cooking to cook the sharks received here and in other places (this is not necessary with the Bait and Switch relic, which requires 99 Archaeology). Note that the rate of raw sailfish and raw blue blubber jellyfish at this spot is moderately slower than when catching them individually at their own spots, but swarm fishing is less active.

91-99: Blue blubbers[edit | edit source]

Raw blue blubber jellyfish is an important food source for high level PvM since eating them does not drain adrenaline. Fishing them specifically is more active than swarm fishing but provides the jellyfish at a faster rate.

93: Prifddinas Waterfall Fishing[edit | edit source]

It is still recommended to do this for the crystal fishing rod. This rod can be used at swarm fishing.

97-99: Sailfish[edit | edit source]

Swift sailfish provide raw sailfish at a faster rate than swarm fishing.

Repeatable events[edit | edit source]

Fishing experience[edit | edit source]

  • The Giant Oyster gives very high Fishing and Farming experience monthly. Using an admiral pie or fish pie will increase the experience gained from this.
  • Fishing contracts from The Whaler give high fishing experience and chimes, but take a while to complete. Players can complete 3-7 daily.

Fish for food[edit | edit source]

Milestone rewards[edit | edit source]

Every level will also improve catch rate.
