This is a guide to using Pixelmator, a graphics editor for macOS. It only covers uses specific to the RuneScape Wiki, as many general-use tutorials for Pixelmator can already be found online. It assumes you have either read the introduction to GIMP or have basic experience with image editors, as most editors share similar features: brushes, selection tools, layers and styles, masks and blending modes, etc.

A demo can be downloaded at, and the full application can be purchased on the Mac App Store.

Removing interfaces[edit source]

Screenshots occasionally have interface elements that cannot be avoided or disabled, such as health bars and hitsplats during combat, or the "Press Esc to skip" text during cutscenes. The Pixelmator - brush tool.png Brush tool can be used to paint over interfaces when they are on solid or mostly-solid backgrounds. However, if the background is too complex to manually recreate, the Pixelmator - repair tool.png Repair tool can be used to fill in an area by having Pixelmator generate what would be "underneath" your selection.

As an example, our unaltered image of the Hefin Agility Course (available in the file history at File:Hefin Agility Course.png) has icons of elven clans from the Voice of Seren in the top left – we're going to remove them. Colour over the icons, holding the mouse down the entire time:

Once you let go, the edge detection, content patching, and color correction algorithms do their work. The final result, without any clan icons:

Pixelmator - repair use 2.png

Adding transparency[edit source]

Images of non-character players and monsters require transparency, in accordance with our image policy. As character models in RuneScape are mostly made of polygons with straight edges, the Pixelmator - polygonal lasso tool.png Polygonal Lasso tool is the best choice in this situation.

The original upload of the Azure Parrot (in the file history at File:Azure Parrot.png) needs its background removed. Trace around the NPC model, clicking every time the edge changes direction. If you make a mistake, you can click on the last point you placed to remove it and select another spot.

Once you've gone all the way around the NPC and finished your selection, choose Edit > Invert Selection. Now that everything except your subject is selected, press the Delete key. The final result, after cropping transparent pixels around the image with Image > Trim Canvas..., is:

Pixelmator - transparency 2.png
