Haakon the Champion is the strongest barbarian in Gunnarsgrunn. He serves as an advisor to Chieftain Gunthor. He can be challenged to an honourable duel. In Year 165 of the Fifth Age, he served as the bodyguard of the visiting mage Castimir and fought against two assassins who were targeting the barbarian priestess Arisha. He easily overpowered one of them.

Trivia

• For a while, following the advent of the Evolution of Combat, Haakon was weaker than the normal barbarian, despite his title as a "champion." However, this was fixed on 22 October 2013.
• He is one of the few monsters who still use the old hurt sounds.
• He has a gravestone in the New Varrock graveyard which reads "Haakon. Lived by the sword, died by the sword, impaled on a bigger sword."
• He replaced Gunthor the Brave as the attackable champion of Barbarian Village when the quest Gunnar's Ground was released, which changed Gunthor the Brave into the non-attackable Chieftain Gunthor.
