Giant Oyster

The Giant Oyster is a monthly Distraction and Diversion within the sunken Tutorial Island that is accessible upon completion of Beneath Cursed Tides. Players can collect and catch items to feed to the oyster, receiving Fishing and Farming experience from doing so. Once fed, the Giant Oyster will close its mouth, preventing further feedings. The following month after being fed, the Giant Oyster can be checked, opening to reveal treasure inside for the player to collect.

Players can leave the island by teleporting away or by leaving to the surface through the bubbles in the building north-east of the seaweed patch (this is the original building that the player started in when creating a character in Tutorial Island).

Free-to-play players may only gain Fishing experience from fishing sea cucumber, but will not receive any rewards. F2P players cannot feed or interact with the oyster.

The Giant Oyster can be reset once per month with a monthly D&D token.

Urns and advanced pulse cores do not work on the Fishing and Farming experience received from this event. Neither do the (elite) skilling outfits, like the Fury shark outfit and the Farmer's outfit.

This repeatable content has a hard reset.
The next period's content will become available immediately, regardless of whether a player has logged out.

Getting started[edit | edit source]

A Giant Oyster that has been fed

To begin feeding the Giant Oyster, speak to Wizard Myrtle, found in front of the entrance to Wizards' Tower. She will let you dive to Tutorial Island.

If the Oyster is already closed (from feeding the previous month) the player will not receive the sea cucumber or delicious seaweed items, but will still gain experience from the Fishing and Farming activity. If the player gains the maximum monthly experience from these activities without receiving the items, they must then loot the Oyster before re-attempting to fish and/or pick seaweed. Once the Oyster is open, they can then harvest the missing item(s), but will not receive any additional experience for the action. It is not known if this is a bug; however, there is no effect in terms of experience or rewards if the player forgets to loot the Oyster first and has to re-attempt the Farming or Fishing activity.

After feeding the Oyster the delicious seaweed and sea cucumber, the Oyster will close.

Feeding[edit | edit source]

The player must obtain a sea cucumber and delicious seaweed and feed these to the Oyster, which is found in the cooking area of Tutorial Island. Bonus experience is not gained when harvesting; experience-boosting sets will not boost experience gains either.

Sea cucumber[edit | edit source]

The Fishing spot

A sea cucumber can be fished from the fishing spots found directly west of the Giant Oyster. When attempting to fish, the player will gain Fishing experience 30 times before finally catching a sea cucumber. The amount of Fishing experience gained depends on the player's Fishing level.

The Fishing level can be boosted, and the player will receive the rate based on the boosted level (i.e. a boost from 94 to 99 will give 6,966 experience each harvest). As the boost wears away, the experience rate will as well.

The amount of Fishing experience gained from harvesting the cucumber is roughly three times of the amount of Farming experience gained from harvesting the delicious seaweed.

Delicious seaweed[edit | edit source]

The tasty looking seaweed patch

Delicious seaweed can be harvested from the tasty looking seaweed patch north of the Oyster, near the large Jellyfish. When attempting to harvest from the seaweed patch, the player will gain Farming experience 30 times before finally harvesting delicious seaweed. The amount of Farming experience gained depends on the player's Farming level.

The Farming level can be boosted, and the player will receive the rate based on the boosted level (i.e. a boost from 94 to 99 will give 2,322 experience each harvest). As the boost wears away, the experience rate will as well.

The amount of Farming experience gained from harvesting the seaweed is roughly one-third of the amount of Fishing experience gained from harvesting a sea cucumber.

Rewards[edit | edit source]

An example of the rewards obtained by looting the Oyster.

At the monthly reset, the closed Oyster can be opened. Looting the Oyster will reward the player with items from the Treasure Trail reward tables. The player's total level is used to determine which tables the player can roll on, such as easy/medium/hard, or hard/elite, and then chooses between them randomly. While the rewards mechanic is similar to completing a treasure trail, the rewards cannot be re-rolled like those from a treasure trail clue scroll. Unique treasure trail rewards from the Giant Oyster will count towards the Treasure Trail collection log.

Update history[edit | edit source]

This information has been compiled as part of the update history project. Some updates may not be included—see here for how to help out!
  • patch 27 July 2020 (Update):
    • The Giant Oyster will no longer claim that it can be opened "tomorrow" two days in a row.
  • hidden 11 April 2016 (Update):
    • Bonus experience and experience boosts no longer apply to the Giant Oyster.
  • patch 11 January 2016 (Update):
    • Improved the drop table upon looting the oyster for higher level players. This will take effect from February onwards.
  • patch 4 January 2016 (Update):
    • Fixed some typos on the Giant Oyster D&D tracker.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • On 11 January 2016, a bug allowed players to repeatedly reset the oyster. This was patched within the hour. Players who abused the bug were banned or rolled-back, based on how much they abused the glitch.
  • It's highly recommended if intending on using a Luck of the Dwarves ring to loot the Oyster before looting the seaweed and fishing at the fishing spot. Leaving the underwater area and coming back will lock the Oyster chest until the next reset, regardless if it was looted or not.
  • Bonus experience and experience boosts used to apply to the Giant Oyster, prior to a hidden update on 11 April 2016.
