The gemstone cavern is located beneath the Shilo Village mine. To access it, the player must speak to Kelhar in the underground part of the mine. He will only allow the player to access the dungeon if they have a gemstone dragon Slayer assignment or if they pay him with incomplete hydrix, uncut onyx, or uncut dragonstone gems. Players must also have their Karamja gloves 3 (or higher), either equipped or in their backpack, to descend into the dungeon.

Dragonstone dragons, onyx dragons, and hydrix dragons, which respectively require levels 95, 98 and 101 Slayer to kill, are found in the dungeon. The dungeon also contains gem rocks. There is an agility shortcut at the entrance in the gemstone dragon dungeon, which requires level 94 Agility to use and leads to the hydrix dragons.
