I've come up with another idea: holiday changes to the wordmark, or logo.

Those are some of the ideas I came up with (I know it's bad trans, I threw both together in about 20 minutes). The basic idea of this is to have a slight change in appearance to our logo during major holiday seasons (i.e., Christmas), like the RuneScape Website, which changes during holidays or major updates. This logo change would only be in effect during a one-week period, or maybe as long as the holiday event is out (1 week would be the fallback if no holiday event is released). The holidays I think should be involved in this change are:

  • Thanksgiving
  • Halloween
  • Christmas
  • Easter

And maybe turn-of-the-season type things, such as spring or winter. Those sorts.

Question - Are we going to have to go through the ginormous selection process like we did with our new logo? How will we determine whose ideas are used? sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 01:53, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

EDITCONFLICT Weak support - Although I do not know how difficult it would be to replace the logo upon that happening. But for now, it's a fun idea. Achievements Coelacanth0794 Talk Contribs 01:55, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - Seems like an interesting idea, but we would need to make it so it's not bogged down by bureaucracy like everything else we do. The images you gave are pretty meh, but I bet we can get someone to do really high-quality ones. This could work so long as we keep it small and we don't get that @#$%ing upload bug. ʞooɔ 02:03, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

Comment. Like the idea, but would like to avoid bureaucracy. Would a week of uploading and then a week of straw poll voting be OK for this? ajr 02:19, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Sounds good to me, although MonoBookers won't be able to enjoy it. Shouldn't the templates that replace Random skill not also be updated? The christmas one still uses File:Snowman chathead.png whereas [[:File:Snowman 2011.png]] or anything else should replace it. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 06:47, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

That image could probably be swapped as it is better quality, and any other images that have a similar/identical image with greater detail could also be changed. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 06:51, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Great idea, not sure about needing it for thanksgiving though. Having the logo swap for 1week prior to the date until 1 week after the date, and the in-game events can last for a bit to long in-game. I also think ajr's idea of a week uploading, but using kwiksurvey would be a better idea than a poll, as you can stop multiple votes from ip's, while people can use multiple accounts to vote in polls iirc. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 06:51, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

Support - WoWWiki does this and it seems decent there. I, for one, like the mock-ups User:Iiii I I I presented. Of course, for things like Thanksgiving, no. Jagex might have just recently started doing this event, but I would rather keep national holidays out of the mix. If the uploading bug does attack the logo, we can always bypass it with some additions to [[MediaWiki:Wikia.css]]. This would have to be less formal than other things as it might be silly to have a discussion that lasts two to three months on something so simple. Ryan PM 07:00, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Changing the logo is easy, and provides a noticeable feel. Loads of fansites do this, and there's really no cons. Hofmic Talk 08:15, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

How about we break the bureaucracy - Just pick three people to agree to the new submitted images, surveys can be fudged about. I nominate UrbanCowgirl, Cook, AJR, if they will accept. Keepin it simple is really best. --Degenret01 08:27, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

I think it is best to pick people who are active image makers is the best, so I suggest Urbancowgurl, coel and Fswe or Walrus (of course with an admin uploading them). Also others should be able to make images and give them to the selected people so they can pick the best. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 12:53, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

Support IIIIIIiiiiiIiIiI's versions - I think this would be a good idea, and we actually already do/did this, with April Fools', where we had the Gower head as logo once and as seen in File:Wiki.png's filehistory, we once had this one. To expand this to other holidays too is a good idea. I think it would be good to add some snow to the top of the logo for the christmas one IiiiiIi made though. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 12:53, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

:D - Wow, my idea actually got supports! :o First off, I love IiiIiiIIiII's ideas. (I'd like to ask what program he used to make it) I also am glad that people didn't consider my templates (since they obviously suck), and that people were interested enough to contribute new ideas. As for the idea of breaking the bureaucracy, I think that there should still be a consensus on which images are picked amongst all the community, instead of a select few image makers (RS:SOW), as this *is* something that everybody would see. Adam SavageTalk 21:37, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

Pixelmator --Iiii I I I 22:03, September 6, 2011 (UTC)
So you want to spend a week or two forming consensus on which to use, when they'll only be used for a few days? That doesn't avoid the bureaucracy. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 03:25, September 7, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Doesn't have to be elaborate. A pumpkin in the corner would do if you're too lazy. Yay for wiki holiday spirit! White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 02:49, September 7, 2011 (UTC)

Support - ./emotions-holiday svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 03:21, September 7, 2011 (UTC)

Also, let's not make this a very elaborate process to decide which image to use for which holiday. A Christmas logo won't do us any good if we can't decide on it until Halloween of the next year. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 03:27, September 7, 2011 (UTC)
Not trying to make it elaborate, I'm just saying that 3 people shouldn't make the decision for a practically sitewide release. Adam SavageTalk 11:47, September 7, 2011 (UTC)

I don't see why they shouldn't. It's not like they'll have any sort of major impact on the wiki, and I'd trust the opinions of the designers. Ronan Talk 15:37, September 7, 2011 (UTC)

Support - I really like Iiii I I I's ones at the beginning, and I think that it would be fine to elect a few people to pick them. We don't want it taking as long as we took for the logo. ɳex undique 21:41, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Good stuff. I think a few people deciding would be fine, it is lighthearted after all and regardless of who is choosing, it's unlikely that the choice made won't be good. Avoiding a process like that for the new logo would be great (and it'd also make it a more pleasant surprise when it gets used). Hope they can be uploaded somewhere else, otherwise good luck with the infamous evil image bug. --Henneyj 05:47, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

Support idea - Per all. Strong oppose any bureaucratic process - Let interested users debate amongst themselves when the time comes for a holiday word-mark design. There is no need for any annual threads of slow discussions for something minor like this. 222 talk 06:27, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

SupportComment - I say just give a few days for interested users to whip up an image, and then another few days to decide on one. Whichever image gathers the most support: goes. They'll only be displayed for a few days (or weeks, if we keep them up for as long as Jagex keeps up the event; but I think that's a bit much). Is a few days too short? Maybe, but last time we tried to choose a logo as a community, it went way past the intended length. We need a hard set time limit. Hofmic Talk 22:46, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

Didn't you support already? :O --Iiii I I I 04:57, September 14, 2011 (UTC)

comment - created a theme but forgot to post it. Would this be excessive redesign for a temporary two-week event? --Iiii I I I 03:28, September 18, 2011 (UTC)

Quite the opposite imo, it'd be so much fun to go all out for holidays. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 03:47, September 18, 2011 (UTC)

Obvious Support, Won't talk about which ones... <- --中亚人/中亞人 (Chinasian/Jeffwang16) 跟我谈话 00:45, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

It need a bump anyway - We're pretty largely in support here, why not quit chatting and choose an image? Halloween is getting closer (we have about three weeks to quickly make and choose an image, more than enough time). Hofmic Talk 02:25, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

RS:SNOW - Obviously nobody objects to this... so RS:SNOW. --中亚人/中亞人 (Chinasian/Jeffwang16) 跟我谈话 14:04, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

Halloween - I think we should use IiIIiIIiI's idea, but without any pumpkins. They don't really fit in the foreground, especially if our logo would be black with a black glow ( >:) ). I think that, if we do use Iiii I I I's design for halloween this year, I think it'd be best to put any items which aren't part of the logo design in the background, behind the logo itself, unless we can keep the colour contrast to the minimum. Also, why hasn't this been closed on account of no opposes yet? XD Adam SavageTalk 14:28, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - Actually, the "account of no opposes" is called RS:SNOW, and also I disagree with you, and I think that your comment is nonsensical. --中亚人/中亞人 (Chinasian/Jeffwang16) 跟我谈话 14:36, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

The "account of no opposes" isn't RS:SNOW. RS:SNOW is 2 things
  1. An essay, so it's not policy
  2. If you read it, you'd know it's for early closing of threads that don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of passing
The thread hasn't been closed yet because there is stuff to be discussed. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 14:51, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

Okay, we obviously have support for changing our wordmark for the holidays. However, there seems to be a need to clarify how we're going to decide what images to use, and who all can suggest one. I see 2 methods in the reading of this that seem to have support

  1. Allowing a small group of editors create and/or select a wordmark, and use it
  2. Allowing a week or so to submit images, and then using a poll to select one

Let's get this last detail ironed out, hopefully before Halloween. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 14:51, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

Number 2 allows for anti-bureaucracy, as in RS:NOT#BUREAUCRACY --中亚人/中亞人 (Chinasian/Jeffwang16) 跟我谈话 14:57, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

Don't forget RS:NOT#DEMOCRACY, point being consensus is capable of overriding policy. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 14:59, September 25, 2011 (UTC)
  • 2 please. Let's make this as simple as possible, without creating cabals. Straw poll ftw! ajr 15:26, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

Poll - Simple and easy. 222 talk 01:44, September 26, 2011 (UTC)

Poll - Annnnd I'm gonna be bold here and create a submission page. Regardless of how exactly we choose the 'winner', we'll need a submission page. Hofmic Talk 06:27, September 26, 2011 (UTC)

Uh, we won't need one if a small group of users do it themselves. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 16:53, September 26, 2011 (UTC)
And I'd like to think our submission page wouldn't be a subpage on a archived thread. It will most likely be on a thread created a few weeks before the event, so we will have the week for submissions, the week for the poll, and then the closing if we go that route. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 21:24, September 26, 2011 (UTC)

Closed - For holiday logo changes, a one week period will be given to allow for interested individuals to submit their suggestions for the new logo. Henceforth, a poll will be used to decide which one will be used. --LiquidTalk 23:10, September 30, 2011 (UTC)
