Users are misunderstanding the purpose of the Wikianswers widget. It is very often mistaken for the search box. (If you don't see it, you may have to enable it MORE▼→Manage Widgets, or log out as it is visible to all non-Wikians.)

Can something be done to remedy this and make the widget useful?

If possible, maybe edit the information in the widget to state that entering a query in it will take the user to a page outside of the RuneScape Wiki, as Wikianswers does not have any kind of confirmation page. --  Nequillim  T C E   03:26, December 8, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - I'm not sure if we can even change that with JavaScript/Ajax since Wikia is the one that put it there but if it's possible... Andrew talk 06:05, December 8, 2009 (UTC)

Comment/Support - I see that too, and it is very annoying. I think we need to do something about it. Bringing Wikia staff into this matter may help so they can understand the problem. Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 09:34, December 8, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - Through JavaScript, we could switch it off, or add some text as Nequillim suggested at the end of the widget.   az talk   09:35, December 8, 2009 (UTC)

Support - Per all. It's very irritating, as there aren't usually any actual questions in that widget box. ~ Fire Surge icon.png Sentry Telos Talk  09:39, December 8, 2009 (UTC)

Comment I answered a few of them, but then got annoyed that people were too lazy to type those words in the search box so said hell with that. Funny how we see things differently eh? Would there be a way for the question box to function as a seocnd search box to lead them to the article they need? That would be most helpful-- 10:03, December 8, 2009 (UTC)Degenret01 10:05, December 8, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - For myself, I have essentially given up with Wikianswers to even try to support the project. It may have some use for some people, but as it applies to the RS Wiki, I think this does more harm than good. Most of the folks posting questions on Wikianswers are simply lazy to take the extra step of simply googling for the answer, or for that matter could come to this wiki and simply type in the name of the creature, skill, or quest to read the existing articles on the topic to get the answer. I know Wikia is hoping that the active members of this community will help out with the Runescape section of Wikianswers (the pile of questions there is huge) but it seems like a waste of talent to have folks answering those questions and neglecting the content of this wiki that IMHO does a much better job of explaining 90%-95% of all of the questions posed there. More importantly, the signal/noise ratio is so awful on Wikianswers that posting to a place like the forums of this wiki would get a much better response. If we could switch this off, I would support such a move. --Robert Horning 13:22, December 8, 2009 (UTC)

Comment/Support - I worked on Wikianswers for a week and gave up as too many questions were easily answered by a search on the wiki. - TehKittyCatTalk Wikian-Book 21:42, December 8, 2009 (UTC)

Support - Wot? So this is what's been happening? I thought people were just stupid and didn't know how to ask a complete question O_o.. We really should change this... maybe then the box can be used for actual questions. Quest point cape.pngLil Diriz 77 Talk Summoning-icon.png 23:18, December 8, 2009 (UTC)

Support - Hiding this box for unregistered users. I think it'll still be confused with the search box even if additional text is added. --Quarenon  Talk 01:56, December 9, 2009 (UTC)

Support - I literally LOLed when I realized that THAT is why the questions are usually just names of stuff. 02:33, December 9, 2009 (UTC)

So did I. Quest point cape.pngLil Diriz 77 Talk Summoning-icon.png 05:31, December 9, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - Occasionally, weird questions appear, like "How do I lick my d***". Just saying. --Nup(T) 07:59, December 16, 2009 (UTC)

Support - I never knew these were misunderstandings. Great support for any solution. Ancient talisman.png Oil4 Talk 22:36, December 16, 2009 (UTC)

The text around the questions can be edited to make it clearer that you're meant to ask a question, not search for something. I recently changed MediaWiki:Ask a question on the RuneScape wiki from "type question here" to "ask a RuneScape question here" and the things now showing in the widget do seem more like real questions than search terms, so hopefully this had the right effect. The other text on the widget can be changed for users, admins, and anons. You might want to experiment with that and see what sort of text leads to more relevant questions. Angela<staff /> (talk) 06:34, December 17, 2009 (UTC)
Great! Thanks a lot Angela!! =D Ancient talisman.png Oil4 Talk 21:50, December 17, 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for making the effort, Angela. But I'm unsure if this will do much, if anything... Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 00:55, December 20, 2009 (UTC)
Actually there is an increase in real questions percentage wise. Still a lot of ones that could be answered if they typed an item name in the search bar, but definitely a bit better. I'm still disinclined to really answer much though, it seems a distraction from "real" wiki work.--Degenret01 01:07, December 20, 2009 (UTC)

Support - Don't see how this could turn out negative/harmful in any way possible. --Fruit.Smoothie 01:19, December 20, 2009 (UTC)

Request for closure - Since (most) users now realise the purpose of the WikiAnswers widget and we have seen a significant rise in actual questions. ~ Fire Surge icon.png Sentry Telos Talk  02:12, December 21, 2009 (UTC)

Closed - Wikia Staff has addressed this issue. C.ChiamTalk 14:18, January 15, 2010 (UTC)
