Yes, I am aware of Forum:Wikia's new look - This forum will give a main summary of the new look and will give a general overview so we can discuss seperate parts. We might want to split this up to seperate sub-forums.
Please do not complain about the new skin here. Any complaints may be sent to Special:Contact or posted at the Wikia Staff Blog.

Hi all,

As everybody is probably aware of by now, all Wikia Wiki's will soon be switched to the new skin. As the RuneScape Wiki is one of the larger and most active wiki's here at Wikia, the Gaming Team (including me) will make sure the RuneScape Wiki is properly prepared for the upcoming skin. The goal of this thread is to discuss the changes of the new skin and reach concensus on changing them. --Mark (talk) 14:18, September 29, 2010 (UTC)

Discussion

We can split the new skin up in 6 parts:

  • The new navigation
  • Logo
  • Common.css
  • Mainpage
  • Templates, tables, etc.
  • New theme

These different sections will all get their own seperate header so we can properly dicuss it. If the discussions become too long we can split them up in new sub-forums. Mark (talk) 14:18, September 29, 2010 (UTC)

New navigation

The new navigation consists out of 4 headings, each with a menu of 7 links that can't expand like the current sidebar. Below is a draft taken from MediaWiki talk:Wiki-navigation. I suggest we mainly use pages found at Special:Mostvisitedpages, remove a section. A section should be replaced with some main pages found at the Mostvisitedpages special page.

The new logo will be located at the top left, just below the Global Wikia navigation. It's maximum dimensions are 250x65 so none of the Forum:Changing the logo logo's will work, therefor I suggest we try to create alternatives of our current submissions.

Common.css/js

We'll move the current content of Common.css to Wikia.css, as Common.css is no longer supported. This also means Monobook won't work properly either, so we have to take that in consideration and also move some of the code to Monobook.css. Note that Common.css has several Monaco-only features that will be removed. However, there is also Common.js. As it contains many scripts I'm quite sure some of them won't work with the New Look, so it might require some updating. Note: We may not remove core functionalities of the new skin.

Main page

As the new Wikia page dimensions are smaller, we might have to change some of its code. As the wiki is also getting a new colour scheme, the mainpage might also need some colours changes (as do all templates). The mainpage may be fully styled with MediaWiki:Wikia.css.

Templates and tables

We also have to change some of the templates/tables, as the colour scheme will be changed. As most templates/tables have classes we'll just have to move the code from RuneScape:Theme/heroes.css to Wikia.css and change the colours.

New theme

I suggest we try to create a theme that's based upon the colours of the RuneScape website, though that's just my opinion. Currently there are several theme's available which we may combine to create the best available skin. Note: The monaco skin will be discontinued, Monobook will not (probably).

Forum:Propose a new theme
Proposal - I propose we open a new submissions page allowing users to submit a new theme/logo, see above for a draft based upon the Logo submission page.

Other

As the SiteNotice will be discontinued, it will be replaced with MediaWiki:Community-corner. Each time the new "sitenotice" is edited, every user will receive a message about it.

Questions

Feel free to use this section to ask questions about the new skin, and I or somebody else will answer ASAP. Note that there's a FAQ available at Community Central.

According to Special:ThemeDesigner, the custom graphic has the dimensions of 265x65, not 265x100 (it wouldn't upload). Also, didn't realize that my upload actually went on the Wiki (thought it would work like avatars). File:Wiki-wordmark.png. So... Ryan PM 17:13, September 29, 2010 (UTC)

I hope you don't mind, however, I set it back to default for the time being, as the colours were straining my eyes (and we should wait until discussion on a modified logo has been completed before uploading anything).-- 18:27, September 29, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. I've fixed the dimensions. Mark (talk) 18:32, September 29, 2010 (UTC)
My bad, wanted it to replicate the RS site and had hoped beyond hope that the tool would only affect me. Albeit I knew that the tool was meant to influence the whole wiki and that soon, would only be available to sysops and staff. Ryan PM 18:47, September 29, 2010 (UTC)
It's supposed to be. Mark (talk) 19:08, September 29, 2010 (UTC)

Core functionalities cannot be removed, and in a recent staff blog, blogs were given as an example of a core functionality, and we're not allowed to disable them. Does that mean we have to have blogs again? Because if we did, that would suck. --Callofduty4 20:04, September 29, 2010 (UTC)

No. Ryan PM 20:08, September 29, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I suggest we present any changes that we cannot do to the skin as a wiki to users so - if they want to - can add them to their personal .css/.js. This way we are still complying with Wikia's new terms and making sure our [active] users can have what they want (I know I've said this already, but I'm saying it again). Can I also ask, does auto-refresh still exist in the new look? 222 talk 01:59, September 30, 2010 (UTC)

I applaud Wikia in screwing over the ThemeDesigner by changing it from Staff and beta to Staff and beta + sysop (Sysop is also required now but is a hidden requirement). So now I need to go and create a new Wiki just to find the bugs in it? Way to go. Ryan PM 02:03, September 30, 2010 (UTC)

Are customised side-bars navigation bars ever going to work? And can some one please add auto-refresh back, its really annoying have to refresh all the time. 222 talk 04:33, September 30, 2010 (UTC)

I don't think so and for those that can still access the ThemeDesigner here, does the Previous editions/revisions say "이전 판" now? Ryan PM 17:04, September 30, 2010 (UTC)
I really hope that "I don't think so" means "I don't know", otherwise I am gonna rage! 222 talk 00:47, October 1, 2010 (UTC)
As far as I am aware, they won't be adding personalization to user account minus the CSS/JS to keep as much of a coherent wiki system look as possible. Or it could be that they will be added around the last week of October to whenever. Staff hasn't really talked about that yet though. Ryan PM 02:15, October 2, 2010 (UTC)
Sad cases (Wikia). 222 talk 03:02, October 2, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I like the proposed theme, except that the logo does not match the skin in anyway and it looks a bit plain with only two images and not much else going on (Red Dead also has two, but far more larger and detailed background). Ryan PM 17:30, October 3, 2010 (UTC)

Do note it's just an example, and I think it's best if we allow more submissions. Though I agree that it looks a bit empty. We can always replace the two background accents/enlarge them. For the logo, I think a submissions page would fit too (though we'd first need a theme so the logo will fit with it). Mark (talk) 20:47, October 3, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I like the skin above, it looks much better than the default. I'm a regular user and I approve this message.  TLUL Talk - Contribs 04:09, October 4, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - The skin is good, but i have tried using those pictures and about half the picture is cut off on my screen, with the text area set at 1000px(i think that's what it is). Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 05:01, October 4, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - A couple of handy css hacks I found on Stelers page... 222 talk 01:46, October 5, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - No!!! Where have our Yew Grove air and fire runes gone? 222 talk 23:24, October 6, 2010 (UTC)

That's should be simple to fix. Give it a week or two. Ryan PM 23:36, October 6, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - All my custom .js has ceased working. Does anyone know of a solution? --Aburnett(Talk) 01:20, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

My change to black coloured text hack has ceased working correctly too! Now the Yew Grove thread listings are grey again, its horrible! 222 talk 01:22, October 7, 2010 (UTC)
As long as you don't mind your JS on all wikis, put it into w:c:community:Special:MyPage/global.js. Ryan PM 01:24, October 7, 2010 (UTC)
roar. My userpage looks horrible. I cant find a link to the recent changes. This is a huge lol. --Aburnett(Talk) 01:25, October 7, 2010 (UTC)
It can be added to your floating toolbar under My Tools by clicking "Edit My Tools" at the bottom. Ryan PM 01:28, October 7, 2010 (UTC)
Just figured that out. This is going to take some getting used to... --Aburnett(Talk) 01:29, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

Question - Is it possible to use CSS to bold all the level 3 headers. <<<Yay! I managed to do something with CSS. Also, how can I make the dates on the Yew Grove/other forums black (or internal-link-blue) again? 222 talk 01:40, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

The code you have for font is correct, however I do not see why your css isn't working. If you're using Chrome, open the Developer's Tools and under heading you should see a /wikia.css. If you don't then try Firefox w/Firebug to see active the active CSS and JS. I really don't see why it wouldn't work. You could always change the links by changing the font that a. Ryan PM 01:47, October 7, 2010 (UTC)
Huh, what, I don't understand? My CSS is working, mostly. It's just the dates on the Yew Grove listings that are not working correctly. 222 talk 01:52, October 7, 2010 (UTC)
My bad, misread it. That's Wikia's doing. Try
.forumlist td.forum_edited a { color: #006CB0 !important; }
Ryan PM 02:23, October 7, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! 222 talk 02:26, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

Question How do I change the global page width back to the original? RDLYBucket detail.pngrwojy 17:00, October 14, 2010 (UTC)

As in to fill the whole page? If so, just cannibalise some the of the stuff at the bottom of User:Thebrains222/wikia.css. Its under the heading"Test - ". 222 talk 05:35, October 15, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Less than 24 (±4 hours from that at the greatest and/or least) hours before Wikia Inc. makes the Wikia skin the default skin on all English wikis. Are we still sure we want to keep this as the basic Oasis theme rather than a better colour pallet? Ryan PM 13:30, October 19, 2010 (UTC)

I suggest we open Forum:Propose a new theme. Mark (talk) 13:34, October 19, 2010 (UTC)
Then let's do that, but I have to say, I really like the NL version of the Wiki. Albeit the White doesn't seem to be in-place. Then again, that's what those suggestions are for. :D Ryan PM 13:38, October 19, 2010 (UTC)
Well, pretty much any monster/NPC may be used at those sides. And yeah... I should really update the mainpage. Mark (talk) 13:43, October 19, 2010 (UTC)
I also suggest we add different background accents (if we get a skin with background accents) for Halloween, Easter and Christmas. Mark (talk) 17:48, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I do NOT like the new looks and workings of the wikia right now.

  • It's much slower.
  • The wikia is unclear.
  • When scrolling, it automaticly goes to the start of the page.
  • Editing goes slower.
  • Pages with infoboxes are rushed.

I do not see the point of changing a wikia which is good enough. This is more of a change then an improvement. For my opinion, rollback. Buzz (Talk#P ) 11:40, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

About the slower part, this skin actually loads far faster than Monaco (as proven by Firebug). Mark (talk) 13:59, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I haven't really tried much major editing with this new layout yet, but I'm hoping that in creating Special:MyPage/Oasis.js I've been able to get EzHiscores to work under it. (Silly me changed back to Monoco long enough to update it before thinking to try to fix it with the new look.) --goldstar-1.png Aria Ryuko (Talk) miniMint.png 18:18, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

Doesn't seem to be working after all. Not sure why at all, but given how much EzHiscores is used, hopefully it'll be worked out how to get it to work with this new look too. goldstar-1.png Aria Ryuko (Talk) miniMint.png 00:47, October 21, 2010 (UTC) (derp, left out a word, so I edited)
The page is Special:MyPage/wikia.js and Special:MyPage/wikia.css (lowercase w is important); I have heard of some problems where user js wasn't loading unless its saved to a global js page on central, but I'm not sure if they've fixed that or not. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 00:53, October 21, 2010 (UTC)
Only your Global JavaScript works right now. However MediaWiki:Wikia.js finally works. Ryan PM 02:01, October 21, 2010 (UTC)
Global doesn't work with EzHiscores either. I've Ctrl+F5'd after making the changes, and while it still shows up under Monoco, it still isn't showing up on the new skin. goldstar-1.png Aria Ryuko (Talk) miniMint.png 20:41, October 21, 2010 (UTC)

 - any way to prevent the "added by (name)" coming up on thumbs (an example would be first pic on Signature Heroes), it really has no use for this wiki.

Also is the bottom toolbar at the bottom completely unavoidable. I don't need it in the slightest - I don't have any tools. All it does is follow me round like a dodgy ex. --Henneyj 20:57, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

Here are the two things you want:
/* Remove image-attribution */

div.picture-attribution {
    display: none !important; }

/* Prevent toolbar from floating */

.WikiaFooter .toolbar.float {
    position: absolute !important; }
Although it's not really meant to be stuck at the bottom (you may notice this as time goes on). Ryan PM 23:05, October 20, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks :) Yea i do realise there are reasons it needs to follow you but I'd rather just have it at the bottom, for the time being at least. Henneyj 15:42, October 22, 2010 (UTC)

Gah! - I'm trying to add Recent Changes to my floating toolbar like suggested above, but when I click "Edit my toolbar," a screen comes up that I can't click on. I can see the "Add tool" and "List of tools" boxes, but when I try to click them, the screen disappears. Is there some other way to get quick access to Recent Changes?  Tien  23:09, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

That's what happens. The list of tools is a help page that lists almost all Special pages available to users with the respective rights. Just type in Recent changes into the text box and it should appear. The other solution is to redirect the Wiki Activity button to Recent changes via Javascript, but I would advise against that unless you don't care about looking at the Community Corner (which of course notifies you when it's updated). Ryan PM 23:26, October 20, 2010 (UTC)
The problem is that when I click the text box, the screen closes, so I can't type anything in it.  Tien  23:38, October 20, 2010 (UTC)
It looks like I'm having this same problem when viewing images. When I click a thumbnail, the screen pops up with a bigger image, but the screen is blurred and gray. Like it's in the background or something. When I click the screen to view the file page, the screen closes. I definitely wasn't having this problem before. Concerned  Tien  23:52, October 20, 2010 (UTC)
Try another browser and/or computer. That should help, if not then Special:Contact is the next best thing. Ryan PM 23:59, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

Has anyone else noticed that we've had a 400% increase in new users compared to last Thursday? ʞooɔ 04:54, October 22, 2010 (UTC)

Question - Regarding pages in the User and User talk namespaces, I can't seem to find a button to show page history. I have to type in &action=history into my address bar to view it. Is this perhaps a design flaw, or am I missing something? — Enigma 22:04, October 23, 2010 (UTC)

It's located in My Tools of the floating toolbar. Ryan PM 22:06, October 23, 2010 (UTC)
I'm not certain about any floating toolbar or "My Tools," but I found it at the "Edited at this time by this user" thing just beneath the title: there's a link to "View full history" when you hover. Edit: Just realized that the "My Tools" button only shows when you're logged in, so, since I usually log in after I begin making an edit, I didn't notice it. Still: the method I described above works whether you're logged in or not. Leftiness 00:16, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Discussion on new theme submissions

I hereby suggest we open the submissions page for new themes. We add the current skin to the top and allow users to submit new skins, like we did with the new logo. Mark (talk) 17:55, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

Support - As proposer. Mark (talk) 17:57, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - Wait for Oasis to be mandatory. Until then, most users (Monaco hardliners) will not be on Oasis and will not have adequate information to make an educated decision. If we open it now, by November 3, the proposals page will already be spammed up with proposals. --LiquidTalk 22:18, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Per previous comments and it can be easily changed at any time. However, I'm still waiting on what Jagex's in-house lawyer has to say about whether we can or could not use Jagex Limited's own property in it, or for that matter, the background. Ryan PM 22:52, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

We're free to use any Jagex images. Mark (talk) 15:06, October 21, 2010 (UTC)
Can we at least get a copy-and-paste of an email confirming that? Leftiness 04:53, October 22, 2010 (UTC)
*Sigh*. Jagex has already stated on the "Fansites" knowledgebase that they allow usage of images, why the heck would they disallow us to use those images even though every single other fansite uses it? Mark (talk) 15:47, October 22, 2010 (UTC)
Honestly, I expected that you had received another response from Mod Hobein giving us permission to make unfair uses, but it seems they've again decided to leave us in the dark. I apologize for the boring, upsetting, or otherwise repetitive behavior, but your statement was so contradictory to things I hold as fact that I figured it would be better to ask for your source than it would be to try and make sense of your opinion. In response to your argument, I reference section 2.1 and section 3 of the Runescape rules for fansites, and I again point out that copyright infringement should be kept to a minimum despite Jagex's apathy. Leftiness 01:21, October 23, 2010 (UTC)

support - It will be best if we can get a skin functioning before the skin is released to IP's, instead of changing skins and then a different theme which will really confuse Ip's, well a bit anyway. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 07:04, October 21, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Well the Wikia skin has been activated for all readers on this wiki. So let's open the submissions since everyone and every IP can now use the skin. Ryan PM 15:28, October 21, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - Per Helm. Many users (including me) will not switch to oasis till they force us. bad_fetustalk 15:52, October 22, 2010 (UTC)

So you can't judge the colours a skin without using it? Mark (talk) 16:17, October 22, 2010 (UTC)
Also, the decision will probably be after 3 november, as this is just the submissions page which will be several weeks. By the time we vote Oasis will be mandatory. Mark (talk) 16:31, October 22, 2010 (UTC)
That is correct. You may think, "Oh, that skin looks really nice in that picture. I support that one." But then when you use it you say "This sucks, I can hardly read any text smaller than 14pt font." or "This color scheme is ok but after about 15 minutes I get a headache." I believe the best decision would be to wait until November 3rd, having the default skin for a week or two won't kill us. — Enigma 22:00, October 23, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - Per myself above. — Enigma 22:00, October 23, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - It makes everything look bad... --Farming cape (t).png Ikin Talk 22:02, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Requiescat in pace Monaco. Open [subpage] says me. Ryan PM 19:11, November 3, 2010 (UTC)

I'll say that too. Let's get this show on the road. --Aburnett(Talk) 19:13, November 3, 2010 (UTC)
Does anybody disagrees with opening that page? Mark (talk) 19:49, November 3, 2010 (UTC)
Just go ahead and open it ^_^ bad_fetustalk 20:29, November 3, 2010 (UTC)

Closed - Since the Oasis is out, there isn't much to discuss here. The discussion on a new theme can be found at Forum:Propose a new theme. --LiquidTalk 00:29, November 14, 2010 (UTC)
