During some part of the day that I would not care to remember, I came up with the idea of wiki archives. I would download the wiki's database dump ([[w:Help:Database download]]) weekly, and put it up on a website. Using the database dumps we could provide graphs for a number of different wiki statistics over time. And - god forbid - if someone was to delete the wiki, well, we could remake it from that dump! This way, we wouldn't have to make it a big deal if Wikia didn't have a backup either, and if the whole Internet shut down I'd still have the files on a secure hard drive or something. Since the files would be hosted on another site, I don't see the downsides, but others might not see the upsides. ShinyUnown T | C | E 21:52, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

EDIT concerning images: I think I could create an Automator script to download the images overnight. 71.255.54.200 02:08, April 9, 2010 (UTC) Forgot to log in ShinyUnown T | C | E 02:13, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Redundancy is always a good thing to me. It may also be interesting to look at graphed statistics. BerserkHackr 22:47, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Changed to Neutral, I didn't know the wikia kept this stuff already. BerserkHackr 23:05, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
I'd just like to say, Wikia does have the dumps, but I don't think they are available upon request. They also don't have graphs or any visual representation of data over time. ShinyUnown T | C | E 23:29, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Neutral/Oppose - This is not needed, at all. Wikia already keeps these records, the wiki will never get deleted, and you can look in an article's (or MediaWiki file's or a talk pages', etc.) history to find this stuff anyways. Sorry, I just don't see a point to this, but if you can give me one (not mentioned above), then I might change my opinion. Ajraddatz Talk 22:49, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - It appears you can download the database here for backup purposes. It's updated every week, but I have not tried it as I don't think this computer could handle downloading the entire database. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 22:56, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

It is possible to do it, however it is completely redundant and not needed. Ajraddatz Talk 22:57, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
I am not taking a stance on the matter right now, I am just mentioning how to download the database dumps. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 23:00, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Neutral/Oppose - Per Ajr. Wikia keeps all those records. scoot4.pngscooties 23:02, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - We would still lose the images and anything ever deleted if this happened. - TehKittyCatTalk Wikian-Book 23:24, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

No, actually, Wikia still keeps those for about two months after they are deleted. Ajraddatz Talk 23:28, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
They are not in the dump though. - TehKittyCatTalk Wikian-Book 23:49, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
Oh, sorry, I thought that you were talking about Wikia :/ Ajraddatz Talk 00:00, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - What Ajr said. --LiquidTalk 23:25, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - Per Ajr. HaloTalk 23:26, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - You can definitely go ahead and do this; you don't need consensus. However, it takes up a lot of memory space and there isn't much point. Ajraddatz Talk 23:37, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Yes, I know. But I'd like to see it officially recognized by the wiki before I do so. ShinyUnown T | C | E 23:39, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Go for it, and, if worst comes to worst, we'll all thank you for it.  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Leftiness (talk) on 00:02, April 9, 2010 (UTC).

If worst came to worst, then Wikia would call up their completely up-to-date backup, with images, and restore it. Ajraddatz Talk 00:26, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

Closed - No consensus. --LiquidTalk 21:35, April 25, 2010 (UTC)
