Several users and I (listed below) have been throwing this idea around for a few days. I now think we are ready to propose it. The WikiGuild in question is as follows:

Lumbridge University

Description: A series of lessons to teach users (generally new users) how to use and edit the wiki. The course would include teaching (in this order):

  • Basic formatting - How to edit a page, link to other pages, and general wiki-markup.
  • Templates - How to use and create templates, adding them to pages, ect.
  • Tables - When and how to use tables and all the tips and tricks you can use to most effectively use them.
  • Community interaction - This being instruction on topics like use of the Yew Grove, Forums, RS:CVU and non-editing aspects of the wiki.

Each lesson would include one or more pages that are used for instruction. For example, the Basic Formatting page may have a poorly coded article with no markup, just text. The teacher would then give the lesson itself on the topic and then help the users work on whatever homework-like assignment comes from the lesson. The vision is that these lessons would take place in the clan chat of the teacher who would be able to teach these lessons on her or her own timing, so long as the user feels he or she is able to effectively teach the content.

I tried this concept of in-game wiki-markup lessons with User:Ch i p py, who claims that he learned quite a bit from it. I cannot guarantee this will go over perfectly if enacted, though I think we should at least test the concept more extensively.

I would also like to give credit to User:Jack Spiral1, User:Ruudvan10000, and User:Gaz Lloyd for assistance in the development of this proposal (it was not my idea, I simply proposed it). I apologize if I forgot anyone.

Support! - *adds self to list of interested users* When I first started editing wikis (Star Wars Fanon back in 2006) I had no idea how to link, upload images, move pages, add infoboxes and do other basic stuff like that. I didn't know what the Senate Hall (Star Wars Fanon's equivalent of the Yew Grove) was for and I didn't know how to make a topic on it. Something like this would be of great benefit to new users and would be an excellent addition to the wiki. ~ Fire Surge icon.png Sentry Telos Talk  03:15, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

Support - A very interesting idea that sounds very promising. Although there could be a few problems I can think of, although it'd be great to test this. I'd also like to help out as a "teacher", specialising specifically in the areas of Basic Formatting and Community interaction. Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 07:00, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

Support - A great idea. bad_fetustalk 10:10, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

Support - I love the idea, we could also to it on the IRC, no censors etc. I'd be glad to help, If this proposal get accepted, I'll add it to my welcoming template =D   Swizz Talk   Events!   12:09, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

I can't use IRC. Whenever I join it, everything I say appears on screen about three minutes after I say it. I think using the game would create a more familiar environment for the students, who we have to assume are new to the wiki as a whole. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 12:13, March 7, 2010 (UTC)
I see, you right in-game would be a better working environment.   Swizz Talk   Events!   14:41, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I forgot to make note that User:Rwojy agreed to be in charge of certifying users to teach classes. This is merely to make sure the users teaching know the curriculum well enough to teach the content, though he is not any more "in charge" of the possible guild than the community is as a whole. Also, based on User:Quarenon's installer, I created a strip of code that will generate a "notebook" for all users taking the classes that will instantly fill itself with all the notes upon the "notebook" page's creation in the user's space. I created an example of that here to install the pre-existing skins. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 14:40, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

Support - This sounds like a fantastic idea, I'm always willing to help users who leave messages with questions on my talk page, so I'd love to "teach a class". Perhaps some things about basic formatting, tagging and maintaining images, or how to patrol for vandalism. --Aburnett(Talk) 15:12, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

Jack and me where throwing around the idea of doing elective classes that cover topics not covered by the rest of the course. We would like to wait until the guild is stable, should it pass, before we do this. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 15:23, March 7, 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good, I'd still love to lend a hand with the basic curriculum should you guys need any help. --Aburnett(Talk) 15:32, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

Support - A wonderful idea. Ancient talisman.png Oil4 Talk 15:28, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

Support - lovely, darling, lovely. but i do propose to go a little off topic here....we should also add how to write PHP because i really want to learn, and it can be for use of making bots  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mythbusterma (talk).

I said this to Aburnett: Jack and me where throwing around the idea of doing elective classes that cover topics not covered by the rest of the course. We would like to wait until the guild is stable, should it pass, before we do this. I don't dislike the idea of php classes, though I fear that's a bit too off topic. Perhaps it can be done independently. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 16:33, March 7, 2010 (UTC)
Hmm, ok i just think that there may be others on the wiki wanting to learn how to write php....btw do the wikia servers support writing php into them directly? 23:16, March 8, 2010 (UTC)
I have tried my hand at writing a bot, but it didn't work out. I imagine it would be difficult for one to teach PHP coding. I am developing a wiki (on a private server, not hosted by wikia) using PHP, and it's absolutely impossible to teach in game. However, I would like to see a guide on how to create the aspects of the bot other than the initial coding (I don't know enough about bots to explain what I am talking about). Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 00:43, March 9, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Sounds great. I'll help as much as I can. Basic formatting and community interaction sound like possible subjects for me.  Tien  15:51, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

Support - The help pages are pretty unfriendly, and generally tend to be more of reference sheets that a tutorial. Something like this is much needed. I have a few comments on the curriculum but that can wait until this passes first. (As a side note I didn't really take part in a lot of the discussions, but I did mention that the idea is similar to an abandoned thing in my userspace.) Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 16:46, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

Support - The idea would be great for users as I had no idea what to do when I joined the wikia and I still sometimes check the reference pages for when I don't know how to do something. Also, would it be possible to modify what the default user page looks like and link it to those tutorials? Quest point cape.pngTalk Newbie856 edit count Nomad guideMusic icon.png 17:09, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

Yes it is, I have a default userpage set up on another wiki I B'Crat. However, it would be better to ask everyone to include it in their personal welcome messages. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 21:29, March 7, 2010 (UTC)
Or we could re-enable User:Wikia. Hello71 00:27, March 8, 2010 (UTC)
We disabled him so that people of flesh and blood could be welcoming users, not robots. It's best we just have people add it to their welcome templates. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 00:32, March 8, 2010 (UTC)

Question - Will there be more requirements to being a "teacher"? Account creation age? Edit count?   Swizz Talk   Events!   16:18, March 8, 2010 (UTC)

One merely would need to be certified by User:Rwojy to prove they are familiar with the content of whatever lesson(s) they plan to teach. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 20:01, March 8, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - It appears this is going to pass, and there are some things I think we should have before we start. If anyone here has any art skills, can somebody create a graphic of a notebook? I would like to use this on the Lesson pages that can be used to copy the notes into a page. I have tested this, and it will work. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 22:54, March 8, 2010 (UTC)

Are you good with tables? I can't be the only one teaching it. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 10:26, March 10, 2010 (UTC)
Yes i can do wiki markup tables, and I can do HTML tables - 15:34, March 10, 2010 (UTC)
Warning: Deprecated technology. HTML tables weel not verk. Hello71 22:31, March 10, 2010 (UTC)
What are you high on? HTML Tables are nowhere near depreciated......and yes they do 23:44, March 10, 2010 (UTC)
It does not matter regardless, as the plan is to only teach wiki-formatting. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 00:28, March 11, 2010 (UTC)
It's "deprecated", not "depreciated".

to deprecate (third-person singular simple present deprecates, present participle deprecating, simple past and past participle deprecated)

  1. (formal) to express disapproval of
  2. (computing) to recommend against use of
  3. (archaic) to pray against

to depreciate (third-person singular simple present depreciates, present participle depreciating, simple past and past participle depreciated)

(intransitive) To reduce in value over time. (transitive) To belittle

Just saying... Hello71 01:45, March 11, 2010 (UTC)

The correction of other user's spelling or grammar in discussions is counter-productive. It can rarely help the user it is directed to, but it can definitely cause contention. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 01:50, March 11, 2010 (UTC)
Then again, the correction of a correction is also counter-productive. Then again, the correction of a correction of a correction is counter-productive as well... Hello71 02:14, March 11, 2010 (UTC)
However when most people talk about deprecated HTML they talk about HTML that has OFFICIALLY been deprecated by the W3 Convention 03:18, March 11, 2010 (UTC)
