I propose that we make the Weekly Events an official Runescape Wiki Project. IT worked great when we tried it. The problem is, there was not enough awareness. Some minigames and most Raids require 10+ people to be properly done, so attendance is crucial. This is why I propose that it be made into official project, and have the Week’s Minigame/Raid/Skill on sitenotice for all to quickly reference. This is how we will determine what the week’s minigame is:

  1. First Week of Each Month will be PvP Week. The minigame for that Week will be PvP. Second Week is Skilling Week – The minigames would incorporate non-combat skills. Third week would be a PvE – minigames that Involve team fighting. Fourth Week Will be Etcetrian Week – either dangerous minigames, or those that do not incorporate any sort of experience gain.
  2. Below are Options for the four weeks. Those marked with an * (asterisk) can be placed into more than a single category, and would work for either week.
  3. PvP Week Choices:
  1. Skiling Week choices:
  1. PvE Week options:
  1. Miscellaneous Category

Comment - Would there be some sort of schedule to dictate what minigame will be played for that week. You offered many options for each, but how will we determine which on it will be? Perhaps on the project page, an individual poll for each week should be made to allow the community to choose.

Yeah your right it should be decided by the community, and a poll sounds like a good way to do it. Zaros tally.PNGBladeQuick chat button.png# 01:21, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps we could have a page titled "RuneScape:Weekly Events" which contains general info about it, the list of minigames, polls, the scehdule, ect. But the problem is how would we get people to know about it? SiteNotice? A never ending Sitenotice? --— Enigma 05:53, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
Some fansites display upcoming events on their main pages. Maybe we could open a new section on our main page for these weekly events? It may not be necessary though...  Tien  12:35, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
That sounds like the best idea so far, so unless someone thinks of something, we should do that. Maybe in the section have a bulleted list that every Sunday that week's event would be posted, a short description with a time and date (i.e. say the event was Clan Wars, it would say Clan Wars - Friday, May 22, 20:00 UTC) and above the list it would say "Click here for the monthly schedule, list of events and more" perhaps in <small> if the line is too long. --— Enigma 21:55, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Comment - We will have a poll to decide which event is when, so none get left out. For Free players, It will be Clan Wars on Week 1, Duel arena for Week 2, Fist of Guthix for Week 3, and Great Orb Project for Week 4. There aren't any more f2p minigames to choose from, so most f2p events will be raids. I will comrise a list of raids, which will contain far more stuff for f2p to do.  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Doucher4000 (talk) on 23:51, 21 May 2009 (UTC). Tut tut.

Comment - So, is this getting passed as an official project or what? Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 01:14, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

I propose that if Weekly Events is put into action, that the shedules be a wikitable. For example, the schedule might look something like this:

Week # Event Meet at Safe World When
Week 1 (PVP Week) Soul Wars Edgeville Yes 28 Friday, 20:00 UTC
Week 2 (Skilling Week) Stealing Creation Stealing Creation lobby Yes 28 Friday, 20:00 UTC
Week 3 (PVE Week) Pest Control Void Knight Outpost Yes 28 Friday, 20:00 UTC
Week 4 (Misc. Week) Edgeville Dungeon raid Edgeville No 28 Friday, 20:00 UTC

The default world it would be held on would be 28 (the official members WikiWorld.)

Free players wouldnt really have a shedule, as theres only four FTP minigames (Duel Arena, Fist of Guthix, Clan Wars, and Great Orb Project) and most free players cant do Great Orb Project.

Comments? Better Ideas? --— Enigma 22:27, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Comment -awesome! This will work great. However, could we not have a set time? Maybe we try to start it up every hour, or so, so people know when to come. Still working on raids... Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 23:48, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, don't be changing the time every week. Hold an event, every week the same time and day. Friday at 2000, never changes, that way there is no need to always plan a time around others. Make it set. 01:14, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
Alright, I've changed it a bit. Say if world 28 was too crowded with non-wikians, that being the most likley scenario, I've kept the "When" and "World". I've also added whether or not it's "safe" (meaning if when you die you loose your items or not) So, how is it now? --— Enigma 15:10, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Comment - May I be offended? Because free players aren't going to have much if the above becomes official- which would dump us from connecting with the community, which is exactly what it's supposed to do. 04:06, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

The plan for FTP weekly events as Doucher said was a different minigame every week and if you don't have 50 RuneCrafting a dungeon raid for week 4. It would not at all "dump" you from connection with the community, you can always connect with it here and in-game, on free worlds. If you don't want to be excluded, buy a membership. But just because some people are free players doesn't mean the member wikians can't have a little bit of fun and come together. You're just being selfish, to be honest. --— Enigma 15:10, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
Being selfish?... I find that offensive... 23:29, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
Once this gets off we may have a few events over on F2P alone. But every week? If this was F2P worlds exclusive I really don't see how any members would really get into it. By the way nice table enigma that will work out fine =] Zaros tally.PNGBladeQuick chat button.png# 06:56, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
At first it does seem offensive when someone else spots out a flaw in you (in this case selfishness) But think and act on logic, not emotion. --— Enigma 14:27, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Comment - that would be the opposite of my intentions. It's not my fault that you only have 4 minigames... Anyhow, everyone would still be in one Clan Chat, and free players can still gather and do the 4 free minigames. Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 15:07, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

I think I said that in way which it came out as "You're trying to dump F2Ps". I meant to have it mean, "It would dump F2Ps from the community- but connecting with the community is the whole point." 23:29, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
We're not trying to dump free players from the community. You still have access to the clan chat, which is a valuable tool for connecting with the member's community. When you play RuneScape, you enter the clan chat, right? You're already connecting with the community. These weekly events are simply for fun, a way to get even closer together. As mentioned before, we can't do anything about the fact that free players have limited options.  Tien  12:43, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Comment - The table looks great.  Tien  16:07, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Comment - Maybe we could have, a weekly event for members on Fridays and a weekly event for free players and members on Saturdays or something? 12:32, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

It would cycle through the same thing or free players every week, Duel arena week one, Fist of Guthix week two, Clan wars week three, then week four would cycle through the list of raids. You'd just have to know what was happeneing on week four. --— Enigma 14:27, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Comment - I think the Friday P2P and Saturday F2P would be great. This would give the P2P users a chance to visit with F2P when they wanted to. Giving the best option for all involved. F2P is limited no matter what, but this would allow maximum opportunities to mingle so to speak. Strength-icon.png Hammer2092 Time |KOTA Bandos godsword.png 17:39, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Exactly why I suggested it. 20:37, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Comment - Members in general have often felt bored or isolated with wikifests in the past. This is in part due to being confined to a free world rather than having access to all of the features of the full version of the game that they have paid for. It would be very beneficial to bring them into the ingame wiki community through these events. There are many members only activities that we could take part in (for example Trouble Brewing, which is almost always empty even on the official world). I propose alternating (week one is on a members only server, week two is on a free world, etc). Two events per week seems a bit excessive, and alternating provides a balance that should benefit all types of players. And since free players only have four minigames, we would not cycle through all of them as quickly. This should give us more variety. Dtm142 17:50, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

I would love a Corporeal Beast or Tormented Demon raid, but I suppose not everyone has done the quests required for them.  Tien  16:07, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
Me too. Maybe a few of us could sort one out, but we'd still be a pretty small group.
What about some 'suicide' trips, like we did to the chaos elemental that once (those that weren't there and/or don't understand the term - suiciding is going with 3 (or 4) items, and fighting the creature til you die, since you won't lose anything). The CE is probably easiest to suicide in my opinion. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 20:54, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
Comment - I guess we could do suicide raids as an option to a regular raid. Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 15:20, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
How about every other raid be a suicide, so it would go like this: Regular, suicide, regular, and so on? ~MuzTalk 15:22, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
There are loads of options. We could suicide first, then do a normal raid. I guess deciding on the spot by what the people wan would be the best. Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 15:24, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Informing others

No one has posted for a while, so let's bring this proposal back alive again. I believe we're going to create a page called "Runescape:Weekly events," correct? We'll need a way to get people to know about these weekly events. The only ways I can currently think of are:

  1. Putting them on the main page somewhere.
  2. Adding "Weekly Events" under "Community" on the sidebar.

Personally, I prefer the second option because it'd be easier, and many people would see it when they visit the Yew Grove, the Community Portal, or the forums. We wouldn't need to tweak the format of the main page to make space for another section.

Comments? Suggestions?  Tien  14:09, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Maybe we should do both? Lots of users (including myself) hardly ever use the sidebar, but often look at the front page, and visa versa. If you want to capture the maximum attention of the communnity, I do believe we should do both. --— Enigma 14:40, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
I suggested we put it on sitenotice. Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 15:07, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
Do not use this message to announce an upcoming event. Such topics belong in the Events forum. An exception to this rule is advertising about a community-endorsed event (such as Wikifest) on or shortly before the time of the event.
Previously, I had also suggested putting it on the sitenotice, but according to the statement above (taken from Sitenotice guidelines, credit to Bonzi), we can't use the sitenotice to announce an upcoming event. It does say, however, that we can announce community-endorsed events, and I think these weekly events can be considered community-endorsed. The only problem I find with this is that the weekly events will occur regularly. Updating the sitenotice every week, when more important things should be shown on it, might be frowned upon.  Tien  15:36, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Well you have a point tienjt0, although maybe it would not be a bad idea to have it on sitenotice for the first few weeks just to spark awareness and interest in them. Then if it catches on it may not be necessary. Zaros tally.PNGBladeQuick chat button.png# 18:19, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Genius! If we put it on the sitenotice for a week or two and then remove it, hopefully people will read it and become aware of the events.  Tien  18:08, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
New users join every day. All the people that create an account after that sitenotice expires will have no clue there's weekly events until someone personally tells them. We need a way to continuously advertise, and I think having a section on the main page (possibly to the left of the Wiki News section) shouuld work out fine, as well as a link in the sidebar. --— Enigma 21:40, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Ah, true. We'll work it out once this proposal gets passed.  Tien  22:36, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Runescape:Weekly Events

I have started a rough draft of the proposed page "Runescape:Weekly Events." It can be found on my sandbox here. Feel free to provide comments, suggestions, or corrections.  Tien  22:03, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Looking good Tienjt0, I have a question though. On the section "Monthly schedule" does that mean the events of the entire month are to be decided at the beginning of the month or are we deciding on a weekly basis? Also when we have the events announced I think they should be at the top of the page. Zaros tally.PNGBladeQuick chat button.png# 00:00, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
I think deciding the events at the beginning of each month, rather than every week, would be easier. However, others may think differently, so let's see what they think.  Tien  20:33, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

I believe it should be at the beginning of each month. I have some other ideas, too.

Events are held on ______ (day of week?) of each week from ________ (time?) Undecided, I believe.

Weekly Events Sandbox

Unfortunatley, we can't have everyone included during a decent hour. People all across the world, in many different time zones are wikians. So, I think we should have it like this:

Events are held on the Friday/Saturday (depending on your time zone) of each week starting at 20:00 UTC

The majority of wikians will be able to attend at 20:00 UTC, and I think is best.

Second, I think the "Layout" section should be above the shedules, as first comers will want to know what the shedule is about before actuallyusing the shedule.

Third, we need to add polls to vote for the month's weekly events. The previous week's event will not be listed, and if the week type activity list has more than 12 different things, the chosen activity shouldn't be used for the whole year. Heres an example of the polls:

Support voting at beginning of month - I think that will work the best, and the polls look good we should get them setup on Tienjt0's sandbox for now until the main page is underway. I got the polls sitting side by side, if anyone can get them aligned better, please do so. Zaros tally.PNGBladeQuick chat button.png# 23:26, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Unfortunatly, the RuneScape Wiki can't look at it's intended best for everyone due to varying screen resolutions. In General, the wiki is designed to look best with a widescreen (not square) resolution, but if opportunity arises it may work with any resolution. If you can figure out how to not make it look like a tornado hit them on a "sqaure" screen, go ahead. --— Enigma 20:28, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I just wanted the polls side by side because having them on top of each other takes up unnecessary space on the page... there's a bunch of space to the right of the polls that could be used. But now as I look at the side-by-side format... hehe, it might look better just to have the polls top-on-top.  Tien  23:26, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I just aligned them to be even at the top, I think that looks alot better. Zaros tally.PNGBladeQuick chat button.png# 01:35, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Agreed.  Tien  15:20, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

I would be wary of voting, mainly because of sockpuppets, combined with the fact that you can't see who actually voted. Butterman62 (talk) 01:46, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

I don't think it'll matter too much. These are simply weekly events, and it won't hurt if a minigame is chosen for the week just because a couple of sockpuppets voted for it. Speaking of that, I think it's assumed that we have to play each minigame at least once before a minigame can be chosen a second time.  Tien  15:20, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

I still don't understand the setup for free players. 17:12, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

That's simple. There aren't any setup for free players. FredeTalk 21:27, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Free players will alternate among the four F2P minigames. That's the best we can do for you, unless we want to force members to play F2P minigames when members deserve to have have their fun playing the games available to them. However, if you have any suggestions, don't hesitate to let your voice be heard. Personally, I think the clan chat is enough... it's an excellent way to keep in touch with members in-game, and you should feel lucky to have it.  Tien  23:13, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Okay, that second sentence made me sound mean even though I never even thought about having you do that... Now, don't misinterpret that as me saying that you said that's what I said, because I never said that you said that's what I said (?). And that last sentence also made me sound selfish. I'm not being selfish. The only thing I ever did here was try to make sure F2Ps had something (that's for you, Enigma.). And once, again, I'm not saying that you said I was selfish (Tein), but what you said make it sound like I was being uncontent (is that a word?)... I say this. This should work out so that members aren't limited, BUT, if members want to play with the frayerz (new collective word for free players. Hooray.)We can either have a members' thing on one day, and frayerz' on the next; or, we can have, an hour of members' time and an hour of frayerz' time (on the same day), having the members come if they want to. Eh? 01:11, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
I kinda agree with Tienjt0. I don't like any of the F2P minigames. I'll just do P2P ones if this idea comes through. =/ Prayer.png Jedi Talk HS Log Tracker Summoning.png 06:20, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

What I am tring to say is, have a member's thing one time, and a frayers' thing at another time. DO YOU UNDERSTAND MY SUGGESTION? 18:59, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
Okay, no need to shout. >.< In my previous paragraph, I had no intention of making you sound mean or selfish, so I'm sorry if it sounded that way. Members are more than welcome to hang out with free players if they want... I was just saying that we can't incorporate P2P and F2P together all the time. Your suggestion is great, and a suggestion is all I was looking for.  Tien  19:25, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
I try to make things fair, but Jagex doesn't. Jagex cares more about where the money is coming in, and thus members have more things to do. I agreed to having the p2p event on Friday then the f2p event on saturday, so the members would have a chance to hang out with the free players in their event. I believe that is as fair as it gets. I apologize for any misunderstandings --— Enigma 21:23, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Well, I was making sure they understood, because what they were saying didn't have really anything to do with the suggestion... and, all I want to know is how we could do my suggestion? I see no problem with holding a members' event one day and frayers' the next (Preferably Friday & Saturday)... 20:37, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Didn't we agree to have the weekly event every day, At the beginning of each hour? Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 21:16, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
No, that would make it an hourly event... ---— Enigma 21:23, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
No, you're not getting what I'm saying. This is how it would work:
  1. We determine the week's event.
  2. Every hour, anyone interested should call out in the CC for anyone like-minded.
  3. If successfull, the event occurs. If not, it doesn't.

Also, I think we should also choose back-up events, in case people get bored of the original one. Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 03:40, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

It's my experience that f2p minigames aren't all that fun,but raids might be better...we could raid...spider hill in the wilderness,it would be nice to see a bunch of dead spiders...Oh,yeah,does the wiki have a team-cape? I forgot to ask that...--

That makes it too complicated, D4k, it's best just to have a set time. And if everyone is in the clan team capes will not be needed. --— Enigma 19:21, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
We already argeed that having it at a set time would be a bad idea. People would be left out, not able to come, etc. This "hourly attempt" idea makes it easy to know when an event could start potentially. Maybe have it a set time once a week? Have two different times, the other one for people who can't attend the first one, like the RuneScape Wiki Civil War. --— Enigma 21:53, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
That didn't work too well for the "civil war", as now the originators cannot parttake. Every hour would widen the possible participant's numbers considerably. Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 01:13, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
Instead of a set time we could have a preferred time posted to let everyone know that an event will probably take place around then, but of course this can be subject to change depending on how many are on. Zaros tally.PNGBladeQuick chat button.png# 01:52, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Compromise - We have it hourly for normal events, but with set times for events requiring a set number of people (eg. Soul Wars)? Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 03:07, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Just curious, Stealing Creation is listed under both skilling and pvp..if it's a pvp week, I assume that you battle each other and if it's skilling, there is no fighting? I've never played it before but I was just wondering. I'd like to try it sometime. Thanks. Vadanea 06:18, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I would assume that'd be the case. We need more people to contribute to this discussion...  Tien  15:25, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Support Compromise - Lets just get things started with a fixed times for events like D4K suggested for now and see how the turn out is and we can adjust accordingly for the future months. I like the idea of voting for the month events. Starting 1 month in advance and ending 1 week prior to the next month. That gives wikians 3 weeks to vote and 1 week for a notice to be posted. Also, the vote boxes should eliminate the current months events so as not to repeat them the next month. Strength-icon.png Hammer2092 Time |KOTA Bandos godsword.png 17:10, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Suggestion - Maybe add Penguin hunting? Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 00:46, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Hourly verses Set Times

(New section as I think this is a key point.)

As discussed above (in amongst other comments too), it's kinda undecided on whether the events should take place at a set time of the week or whenever someone is bothered on an hour.

Advantages and disadvantages of each:

Set time Hourly
Advantages Disadvantages Advantages Disadvantages
  • Would have a higher turnout more often.
  • Gives users more time to prepare.
  • More discussable (can be chosen by all editors using the YG/project page/whatever, rather than whoever happens to be in the CC at the time).
  • Hard to accomadate all interested users.
  • Allows those who are in the CC to decide there and then.
  • Easier for users outside the American/British time zones to participate.
  • Less preparation time.
  • May well have little-to-no turnout often.
  • Harder to get a wide vareity of opinions.
    • Connection losses during discussion are a problem too.

(Feel free to add/remove concerns to the table)

So I propose this:

Have a set time (or two to accomadate more users) of the event to 'open' the week - likely on a Friday or Saturday. This will be announced (a week?) prior to the event, giving time for preparation of all involved, and for word to get around for a fairly high turnout.

Then, for the next seven days (until the next event is 'opened'), at any time, a user can call out to the CC to play the minigame or event for that week. If successful, the event happens; if not, it does not.

Comment - The events should start on a Saturday if/when we have a fixed time(Based on European & Americas Time Zones). Strength-icon.png Hammer2092 Time |KOTA Bandos godsword.png 17:30, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Support - exactly what I said. Having an "opening" would also be a great idea. Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 21:33, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Support both - The main problem with having just the hourly time is getting people to participate, in the past when we tried to organize minigames most of them were too preoccupied to come. Also having a set time will allow people to commit themselves to it better yet still if people missed the scheduled event they could always get another one started. Support - Great idea. This proposal is taking awhile... --— Enigma 15:16, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Yes, it is taking a while. That is why I have taken action! I present to you... Runescape:Weekly Events. If any of you could add the appropriate category *(as I don't know which category the page belongs to) or any other necessary additions to the page, that would be great. Also, the times... I think 7 or 8 PM is a good time for most US peeps? I don't know which time zone to use in the page.

Also, should we start doing the events now, in the middle of the month, or should we wait until the next month?  Tien  12:50, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Call for Closure - We pretty much decided that we'll have weekly events, so why not archive this and continue the discussion elsewhere? This page is getting rather laggy. Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 02:54, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Yes, lets continue it to a shorter page like talk:Weekly Events, where I have added soe ideas of the times --— Enigma 15:23, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Closed - Weekly Events will be a RuneScape Wiki Project. C.ChiamTalk 15:31, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
