I believe that we are not using the RSW Sitenotice to it's full potential. It is currently only updated rarely and contains little. The sitenotice also has "hide" and "dismiss" functions which means it will not be too obtrusive. There are many wikians who i believe this will help greatly, especially those who never participate in Yew grove discussions. I think it will be much more useful if these things are put in it:

  • Tips for both in-game and the wiki which to some extent is already being done. There is a discussion on it here: Forum:Tip of the week.
  • Wiki events and discussions that are judged to be influential on a large portion of the community. E.g. The Fansite Tournament discussion and the wikifests. These are only posted after most details have been set in stone and anyone who looks it up due to the sitenotice will not be able to discuss it or contribute to it.
  • I'm sure there are more things which should be included, i have just had a mind blank and can't think of any...

Discuss for and against (as well as other things that should be incorporated), below.

Discussion

Support - As Nom - [Pharos] 04:59, June 13, 2010 (UTC)

Support - There has to be more than just "As part of our wiki maintenance, please add the {{cleanup image}} template to images you feel need such.". I was surprised the wikifest review was not put up there. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 05:06, June 13, 2010 (UTC)

Support - The sitenotice has helped me find the CC and learn about wikifests, but it seems to be under used right now. Although, I think information about events would be much better suited in a box on the main page.   Swizz Talk   Events!   09:05, June 13, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - It already is used like that? bad_fetustalk 10:34, June 13, 2010 (UTC)

Not recently Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 12:43, June 13, 2010 (UTC)
Well, I don't really care if we have in-game tips in there, and we already have wiki tips. We also have the important wiki news and events on there, such as the wikifests. (I wouldn't consider that Fansite Tournament thread that important.) bad_fetustalk 15:10, June 13, 2010 (UTC)
I agree it's not important enough yet, but i think after the wikifest the review thread and that sort of thing should have been put up there like i said before, but i am sure there is more going on the just a tip about cleanup image that has been there for probably at least a month.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 02:03, June 14, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - In-game tips? What, do you want the sitenotice to say, "Try training attack on hill giants!" ....... Andrew talk 23:31, June 14, 2010 (UTC)

Something like "The Ring of kinship teleports you close to a banker and has unlimited charges"? Did you read the Forum:Tip of the week thread? Also, are you opposing the tip part or the increased use of the sitenotice part? [Pharos] 23:45, June 14, 2010 (UTC)

Support events, oppose tips - Sitenotice. Notifications about the site. Events are notifications, so they would be well-suited for the sitenotice. Tips are not, and I think they would be much better off somewhere else. A random tip would just be out of place among (fairly) important site announcements.  Tien  14:25, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Overall support - I like the idea of it all, but I think the in-game tips wouldn't be great (there would need to be loads of them or people would complain that there isn't one that they find useful...). But yeah, it needs to be used better in general. SplâshTâlkSîgn hêrê 18:33, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Another example is the teamspeak chat thing. If not the discussion then at least a short message for those interested. When I went on the cc today almost nobody knew what I was talking about. - [Pharos] 11:02, June 18, 2010 (UTC)

Your wish is my command Chicken7 >talk 11:10, June 18, 2010 (UTC)
(for my next wish I want 2.6 billion gp) Ok, thanks, I forgot that all admins could edit the sitenotice. - [Pharos] 11:55, June 18, 2010 (UTC)

Support Events - In-game tips are usually in articles, such as our article on Nature Rune Running and the respective skill pages. It would be nice to have in-game/wiki events up there though, since it's right in everyone's face when the wiki loads. Zaros symbol.pngChaos Monk Talk SignCoins 250.png 16:53, June 18, 2010 (UTC)

Support events, Neutral on tips - It was the Sitenotice mention of the clan chat that first got me involved in the community, so I believe we need to fully utilize the Sitenotice for whatever we can. Of course, if the Sitenotice is to full of junk, it will cease to be helpful. Therefore, I think the tips section is needless and will be more of a detriment than not having it at all. I see the tips as being somewhat helpful if there are less than three notices up at any given time (an optimal number, in my opinion), but I will stay neutral on them for now. Comment - Hmmm should we get rid of the tips idea then? There isnt much support for it...
Btw ideas on what else to add would be helpful. - [Pharos] 01:46, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - It is being used more now i guess so yeh.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 07:27, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - By the way, for those who opposed the wiki tips, they have actually been going on this whole time. E.g. the cleanup tag message. The in-game tips however i do feel differently about, it would be hard to make messages that appeal to the range of levels that use the wiki as well as non-members and members. - [Pharos] 04:46, June 22, 2010 (UTC)

Question - Instead of the sitenotice, could we put it on the left with those other things ("widgets" I think they're called). Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 04:51, June 22, 2010 (UTC)

maybe the tips but I think the events would be better in the sitenotice. I was also thinking about Rfc's, where are they like listed? Would they go well in a "widget"? - [Pharos] 11:27, June 22, 2010 (UTC)

Partial Support - I think the sitenotice is underused, but I think there's a fine line we have to find the balance on between underused and overused. I'm a regular user and I approve this message.  TLUL Talk - Contribs 01:25, June 23, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Could we add this as well, as it could potentially affect many of us in future. This goes also for any highly important discussions on the Yew Grove.222 talk 09:40, June 24, 2010 (UTC)

Probably not as it is a proposal compared to the wikifest which is different.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 09:51, June 24, 2010 (UTC)
I'm actually comparing it to the Fansite Tournaments 222 talk 10:10, June 24, 2010 (UTC)
I don't believe we should put YG threads up on there. It could get quite large. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 07:57, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
Not all of them. Just one or two very important ones 222 talk 10:56, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I'm fine with utilising it as long as things get removed/replaced at regular intervals, the cleanup image thing was up there for freaking forever. HaloTalk 07:30, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

Support - I will support as long as it is used for either approved things (take TeamSpeak for example) or simple "Did you know?" wiki related types of things. I will oppose if it will be "Dragons are good money because of Dragon Bones." xScoobsx Talk Contribs 07:57, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

Oh yeah what i meant as tips was in line with what is said on degen's tips idea page which means no unprovable tips or vague ones. E.g. a Tool leprechaun will note herbs for you. - [Pharos] 08:23, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
I think there are better places than on the site notice for that. Main page somewhere? HaloTalk 08:33, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
Site notice is only for important announcements, events, reminders, etc. Tips related to RS, like that, would be better on the Main Page. Wiki tips, on the Community Portal. I feel like being bold and just adding a tip box to the community portal for RSW tips. I'll also add them to the Tips Widget, that goes in the sidebar, but the link escapes me. Chicken7 >talk 09:35, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
I think having tips on a little box on the main page (but not on the site notice) is a good idea. Lots of other wikis have did you know sections on their main page, and it generally adds to the attraction.

Comment - Could we make a roster/rotation list for messages so they don't stay too long and other messages get attention? - [Pharos] 15:28, June 26, 2010 (UTC)

Re-request closure - SiteNotice is being used more now. 222 talk 01:12, July 19, 2010 (UTC)

Agree - Per 222 - [Pharos] 07:11, July 19, 2010 (UTC)
It is almost being used to much now.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 07:12, July 19, 2010 (UTC)
Yup, 3 items should be max. 4 is pushing the limit, but is okay. 5 is a no-no. Chicken7 >talk 07:31, July 19, 2010 (UTC)

Closed - The administrative team has taken note of the suggestions, and the sidebar sitenotice will be used more often now. Note, sysops should only add important announcements, events, reminders, etc, and not tips as suggested above, as these belong elsewhere (Degen's tips project).
