I been doing a lot of maintenance edits recently, a lot of it involved deleting duplicated images used in userboxes. And as I did so I noticed that there were a lot of images uploaded to the wiki with no purpose other than a userbox. A few examples:

<div style="text-align:center;"><gallery> File:Smiley.svg|Used in an old version of {{T|Userbox/welcome}} File:Notificatie.gif|Used in {{T|Userbox/followsrules}} </gallery></div> File:Mac logo.png|Used in T|Userbox/Mac user File:XBL wiki icon.png|Used in {{T|Userbox/XBL name}} File:Usergrammarfiendl.png|Used in {{T|Userbox/grammar fiend}}

So do these images count as personal use images? Should they be deleted under RS:IMP and RS:NOT#HOST? And if not, does that mean any image can be used in a userbox? Probably not, so how do we determine what userboxes get the grace of their own image? I say we just delete them as personal images, because its not worth the hassle. kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar.png 05:31, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Completely agree. Would be hard to enforce, as users may learn that they can make a userbox and use the image on their userpage. Userboxes should mostly be about Wiki topics anyway, so most of the time, in-game images (already on the wiki) will be used. Chicken7 >talk 08:25, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Well even though its not Personal image it has no use to wiki main space so, yeh they probably should be deleted.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 09:16, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Support - And you could replace the mac one with File:Cooking apple.png or File:Cooking apple detail.png Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 09:46, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Weak Support - I don't really mind them, but I can see how they can be a problem. bad_fetustalk 13:02, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Changed to Strong Oppose - Just make userboxes official, as we did with the smileys. bad_fetustalk 16:49, June 2, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I think we can maybe delete them, but put them on Photobucket or something so that users can continue to have pictures in their userboxes. I'm a regular user and I approve this message.  TLUL Talk - Contribs 19:13, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - If they are being used, then why delete them? If they aren't, then go ahead. Ajraddatz Talk 19:24, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Although space is not a problem, it is blurring the line of what is and isn't a personal image. It can be used to circumvent our policies, and we wouldn't want that. Chicken7 >talk 06:18, May 28, 2010 (UTC)
And emoticons? (File:-.- emoticon.gif, File:Smile emoticon.gif) Mark (talk) 06:40, May 28, 2010 (UTC)
I was just considering them. I'd say their different, as we officially "endorse" them. We have project page specifically about them. Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 06:48, May 28, 2010 (UTC)
We could always make userboxes official. bad_fetustalk 23:04, May 29, 2010 (UTC)

Support/Oppose - Keep the ones that could possible be used elsewhere (i.e. the smile and the bell) but delete the ones that obviously have no other use (i.e. mac and xbox) --

Well we could just delete them now and upload when they are actually needed? LordDarkPhantom 11:00, June 2, 2010 (UTC)

Support - However, I would like to keep any SVG image used because they can be used else-ware, and we are no longer able to upload svg images with transparency. We have a lot of space on the wiki, and I think we can get around the rules a bit when this is the case (or any other image that we may be able to use else-ware). As for the other images, per all. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 15:18, May 29, 2010 (UTC)

What's that about transparent svg images? Why can't we upload them? I'm a regular user and I approve this message.  TLUL Talk - Contribs 06:46, May 30, 2010 (UTC)
Exactly, I thought previously we were not allowed to upload trans svg. About a month ago, I saved and re-uploaded a few SVGs and they came out transparent. For example; File:Icthlarin symbol.svg. Re-check this please? LordDarkPhantom 11:00, June 2, 2010 (UTC)

Strong support - Doesn't really take much time uploading onto photobucket... LordDarkPhantom 11:00, June 2, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Is someone going to make sure that they get uploaded to Photobucket and re-added to the userboxes? If not there are going to be a loooot of red links. >.< Andrew talk

Support and comment - As per Andrew, They need to be uploaded elsewhere and the specific userboxes edited before removal of the images, otherwise the wanted pages list is going to be VERY full =). RSN: Warthog Rhys Talk Completionist's cape... Coming soon. 16:29, June 2, 2010 (UTC)

Pah! Surely you did not think that I, of all people, would allow red links! The images of the templates can all be replaced with relevant images already hosted on the wiki, for instance, as The Evilman previously said, the apple template can be replaced with File:Cooking apple.png or File:Cooking apple detail.png, the bell could be replaced with File:Assist icon.png or File:Game guide ingame.png, the smiley face has already been replaced by File:Assist icon.png, and is only used in old subst'd instances. The xbox one is trickier, but could be replaced with :File:Tech Support.PNG, or simply the text XBL. I, sir, hate red links more than you, and would never just leave a red link in a template!</braveheart> kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar.png 17:29, June 2, 2010 (UTC)

Strong Oppose - These kind of images really are not a significant problem to the wiki, certainly don't take up much hard drive space (as if that is a problem in the first place), and certainly are being used by multiple users. There is absolutely no possible reason other than a copyright violation to remove these images and I don't see that as an issue either.

For myself, I am not a huge fan of photobucket for anything other than clearly personal images, and even that I'm not 100% convinced is a significant issue either. The main issue is to have this wiki turn into a site like photobucket, where the images are not even really used on any of the pages within the wiki and that it is merely being a hosting service for those images. That is definitely a problem and something that should be fixed if it happens, but is not the role these images are having on this wiki.

As for keeping user boxes under control... that is another topic entirely and perhaps some way to keep the creation of new user boxes under control could happen. I certainly wouldn't mind some extra "bureaucracy" in terms of getting approval for new user boxes created happen or some sort of community approval process for new user boxes if we want to go that route. That is, however, something for another thread. --Robert Horning 20:42, June 4, 2010 (UTC)

These images are just blurring the line between personal images, and permitted images. Users will be able to circumvent policies to have their own personal image. It's just easier if they're kept off-site. We have tools that can be used to resize, etc. I don't think a bureaucratic process would be the best idea, as it may "take the fun" out of them. There is a large selection of RS images available to choose from, and that is the topic of most of our userboxes anyway. Chicken7 >talk 02:21, June 5, 2010 (UTC)
...But not all of them. If someone has an image here for personal intentions but tries to hide it under the guise of it being meant for a userbox, it will be obvious. These images are about as personal to any individual as a random item's inventory icon. We're not talking about someone's character or their pet turtle here. Personal images ended up not being allowed to keep things on other sites intended for hosting images if the image was simply going to be hosted, as opposed to being put to a use. Dragon medium helm! Oppose - Save the Che--! I mean, save the images! I agree with Robert Horning that these images do not harm the Wiki in any major way. If you believe that these images circumvent the CC-BY-SA this Wiki has or if it violates a policy on this Wiki, take a look at the things that are never used when they are uploaded or are only used by one person. Deleting doesn't solve anything, all it does is prevent the normal user from seeing it. Now is there a reason to include specific userbox images with that? If there were anything that needed to be deleted, it would be things that do violate the Share Alike agreement of the Creative Commons license, such as dialogue pages. Even those files used in the mainspace can and will still be used as personal images to a degree on certain userpages. Ryan PM 05:29, June 5, 2010 (UTC)

I don't think there are any legal/license problems, and we haven't raised that issue anyway.` Chicken7 >talk 12:33, June 5, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - All these images have widespread use, userboxes are part of the wiki, the images they use should be as well. --Aburnett(Talk) 19:21, June 7, 2010 (UTC)

Closed - There is no consensus so the images will remain as they are now. Andrew talk 23:21, July 1, 2010 (UTC)
