Mainspace pages should never be in the same category as userpages, yet I am seeing this more and more frequently. When a non-editing-wikian (our audience) goes to a category like Category:Guthixians, they don't care if anyone who edits the wiki considers themselves this and don't want to see a string of userpage links. I would like to establish that mainspace and user categories are to be separated and come up with some means of ensuring it stays this way. For example, innocent userpage editors may add several categories to their page that appear to be user categories but are actually intended for the Mainspace. Category:Wizards or Category:Elves could be put on userpages by users who consider themselves this for their own entertainment. I don't know of any means of doing this effectively other than bots or robotic humans, though somebody generally comes up with a more creative solution.

In essence, Userpages should not be in Mainspace categories, and categories for Mainspace use should be defined as this.

Support - Per nom. Nothing else to say, really :o ajr 22:36, August 9, 2010 (UTC)

I had you in mind when I mentioned somebody coming up with a creative solution. Now all hope is lost. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 22:38, August 9, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Its critical to establish a clear distinction between a userspace category and a mainsapce category. In the case of the guthixians, there could be a category called "Guthixian editors" or "Guthixian users". kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar.png 22:37, August 9, 2010 (UTC)

There is actually a second category for Guthixian users, though this is not the name of the category and there are no implications of this being the purpose in the title. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 22:38, August 9, 2010 (UTC)
Oh I see. Well it still doesn't hurt to make it clear in all cases where a category is for the userspace with the addition of "editors" or "users" to it. kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar.png 22:40, August 9, 2010 (UTC)

Support - No category should be used in the userspace unless labelled as a userspace category. Mainspace templates need not be specified. Riblet15 23:42, August 9, 2010 (UTC)

Support - This would extremely clean up the needs update added and the stub categories. Coelacanth0794 00:08, August 10, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Easier to maintain, and if I'm suddenly got the urge to read more about Guthixians, I certainly don't want to view a page about a user called Muzzy34 or anything like that. ~MuzTalk 01:48, August 10, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Do we honestly need a thread? Do I need to link to be bold? HaloTalk 05:23, August 10, 2010 (UTC)

There are some categories that are intended to be used in both such as Category:Zarosians. I removed User:3rd age farcaster from this assuming it was a mainspace category, then found that the creator intended it for both. This thread is to show that there was, at one time, consensus to remove such categories and actively enforce keeping the two namespaces separate. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 12:58, August 10, 2010 (UTC) my mind, to get around things such as that you would have Category:Zarosians and Category:Users who follow Zaros. The key being that any category users go in starts with "Users". HaloTalk 15:38, August 11, 2010 (UTC)
I actually think something like Category:Zarosian Users would be better. It's shorter, first of all, but if a user goes to add Category:Zarosians to their page, Category:Zarosian Users would be a recommended option, but Category:Users who follow Zaros would not. We want them to see that there is a separate user category. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 16:31, August 13, 2010 (UTC)

Support - They should defiantly not be together, people and NPC's should never be in the same category. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 07:29, August 10, 2010 (UTC)

Strong support - This is something that is long overdue. I've tried to separate the "fun" content for users from the "serious" and informative content, but in the past I have not been very successful. (i.e. RuneScape:Requests for deletion/Bukkit, Forum:Categories, etc). I'm glad that someone is finally taking charge and doing this. --LiquidTalk 00:12, August 11, 2010 (UTC)

Support - This has been discussed previously at Forum:User-Facing_Categories and culminated with Runescape:Categories. It's not hard to identify all improper uses: basically you can just do a recursive search on Category:Content. Neither that category nor any of its subcategories should contain a user page. Actually removing the user pages is more difficult, since sometimes the inclusion is inadvertent or through improper use of a template. Typically our templates have a mainspace only shield that prevents non-mainspace inclusions from including the category. Endasil (Talk) @  05:40, August 15, 2010 (UTC)

Strong support - I made {{Under construction}}'s category (Category:Articles under construction) mainspace only because of it showing userpages. Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 05:45, August 15, 2010 (UTC)

Request for closure - Discussion has died down, and consensus has been achieved. I'm not sure how this is going to be implimented, so perhaps the proposer should post some sort of action plan. ajr 15:05, September 5, 2010 (UTC)

Closed - Even though I am bias to the thread passing as the proposer, 100% support can't be translated any other way. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 15:44, September 5, 2010 (UTC)

Notice - Users may not start appearing in the correct category for some time, as I am currently having to rename some of them. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 15:54, September 5, 2010 (UTC)
