People tend to have a different idea about what goes into update pages.

  • Do we add the picture from the main Runescape homepage?
  • Do we add links to our articles?
  • Do we add all the links in the main news post in bold?
  • Do we add things that are italics and bold in the newspost in italics and bold?
  • Are we even supposed to quote the newspost?

I propose a policy for update pages so people don't get confused and add things they shouldn't. Also to outline what update pages are and that they are supposed to be a direct quote. (They are supposed to be a direct quote, right?)

In case you don't know what an update page is, they are what goes in the Update namespace and in the "Runescape news" on the main page.

Comment - There was something like this... somewhere... Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 08:04, September 8, 2010 (UTC)

No there is no policy on this issue. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 08:07, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
This what you lookin for? Matt (t) 08:10, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
Yes it was. =D Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 08:11, September 8, 2010 (UTC)

CommentSupport - Are you sure we don't already have this in another form? - [Pharos] 08:06, September 8, 2010 (UTC)

There is no policy on this. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 08:07, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
Ok, Support then. Cant believe we never made one on something that happens so often. - [Pharos] 08:09, September 8, 2010 (UTC)

Support - We should have a RuneScape:Update policy.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 08:41, September 8, 2010 (UTC) My opinion -
Do we add the picture from the main Runescape homepage? Yes if it is on the actually update, if it is just on the main page than it should just go on Template:Updates.
Do we add links to our articles? Only links already in the page on the rs site.
Do we add all the links in the main news post in bold? Only if they are bold on the rs site.
Do we add things that are italics and bold in the newspost in italics and bold? Yes
Are we even supposed to quote the newspost? Yes there is no reason why we can't.
That's just my opinion. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 08:07, September 8, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah that's my opinion too, they were just example questions. Matt (t) 08:10, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
We put them in the update itself so it does not turn into an unused file. Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 08:12, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
Might want to change 'My opinion' to 'support' then? Just so its easier to notice? - [Pharos] 08:14, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, but aren't we supposed to directly quote it? The images aren't in the newspost. Matt (t) 08:15, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
You can if you want to Pharos. Matt (t) 08:16, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
I meant Sentra's heading. - [Pharos] 08:26, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
Since they wern't actually part of the newspost the pictures on the main page shouldn't be put on the update page unless we rework the update page to a different layout, will put a link here when i finish it. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 08:41, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
Here's the link. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 09:16, September 8, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I agree with Evil that one good reason to include the pic with the update is to keep the pic from becoming an orphan. Another good reason is that it's more encyclopedic to keep the pic that announced the update with the update. If there's going to be a policy (and this page is only about whether there should be a policy, not what the policy is, right?), then the pics should be kept. --Saftzie (talk) 08:35, September 8, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I'm of the opinion that everything should be copied word-for-word, link-for-link, as it is from the news pages (with the exception of the broken links in older news posts). In addition, we should keep the picture on the Update page, because most people, when viewing the update on the RuneScape website, see the image. Most users on the wiki would never see the image if it was not on the page itself. Also, I don't see the need to quote the pages as I believe it already says they are quoted from the RuneScape website. BTW, I think "support"ing anything is a bit premature, as there isn't even a proposal on the table. I hope someone will create a proposal dealing with the questions Matthew mentioned above. ʞooɔ 08:43, September 8, 2010 (UTC)

Also, if we make a proposal for this, I'd appreciate it if someone could create a mock-up of what the new page might look like. ʞooɔ 08:45, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
And what do we do about the text found on the updates section of the RuneScape main page? For instance, on the latest update...
Elite level tasks have been added to all existing Achievement Diaries that didn’t already have them. The Lumbridge/Draynor diary has Hard tasks instead, and is available to all players. Rewards include experience lamps and further upgrades to Achievement Diary clothing.

...*thinking*... we could modify Template:Update. A an optional part that goes like this "Announcement message: blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah dragon blah blah blah blah blah new blah blah blah blah blah blah kthxbai". But that's just an idea. Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 08:57, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
Have a look at my sandbox with the link above, we could do that. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 09:16, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
Here's my attempt. ʞooɔ 09:36, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
I like it except the picture is not put in it's place in the actual news post as well..Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 09:39, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
I think having the picture twice on the same page is a waste of time, tbh. ʞooɔ 09:40, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
My try. Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 09:41, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
@cook Yes but the picture is part of it and we need a direct copy of the post, plus i think the main part should go at the top since that is the actual post and the thing on the main page is like a minor summary.
@evil Hmm, i personally don't like it because all the main page stuff is in the same template as the copyright stuff. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 09:56, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
I did that for easy copy-paste-ness. And isn't the message a direct quote/copyrighted? Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 09:59, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
What i'm talking about is having the main-page stuff combined with stuff needed for copyright, i'm not sure why but personally i just don't like the look of them combined. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 10:04, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
How about now? Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 10:09, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
Thats looks really good, just i still think it needs the picture added to it's proper place as well, just because it says in the copyright template thing "direct quote". Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 10:17, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
...What? That image is usually never in the news post, we add them so, again, it does not turn into an unused file. Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 10:21, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
See. Not there. Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 10:23, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
Hmm it was on the update page so i assumed it was, maybe i should get rid of it from there. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 10:25, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
AMG SENTRA!!! We have them there so it does not turn into an unused file! Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 10:30, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
But since it's not on the actual page on the rs website it shouldn't be there, unless we get the new layout passed. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 10:34, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
Until there is a change (like this thread) those stay there. Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 10:36, September 8, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I intend to make a draft tomorrow as it will be the first time I'll get enough time. I can't do it now as my dad's gonna come in and tell me to go to sleep at any moment. Matt (t) 11:38, September 8, 2010 (UTC)

Proposal

Okay I've made a proposal here. I may have missed out some things. This just a proposal, so feel free to suggest changes. Matt (t) 07:37, September 9, 2010 (UTC)

Discussion

Support with mod - Per Sentra. Mod has been made so I support. Matt (t) 07:56, September 9, 2010 (UTC)

Support with modification - I think it's good but it would be good if we add the post from the main page to each update page like in mine/cooks/evil sandbox versions. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 07:41, September 9, 2010 (UTC)

Why? Matt (t) 07:44, September 9, 2010 (UTC)
I think it would be usefull, plus then we could put the picture in it's proper place and not dump it into a place it shouldn't be. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 07:45, September 9, 2010 (UTC)
Huh, yeah at the bottom like on your sandbox would be actually really good now that you mention it... Matt (t)

Support with Sentra's mod - Couldn't hurt to have those. Otherwise, very nice. Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 07:46, September 9, 2010 (UTC)

OMG! Really? I'm terrible at wording stuff... Matt (t) 07:48, September 9, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Changed it. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 07:52, September 9, 2010 (UTC)

I made some slight wording changes to it. Smile Matt (t) 07:56, September 9, 2010 (UTC)

  • Materials (including without limit all information, software, data, text, photographs, graphics, sound and video) placed on any Jagex Product by us or on our behalf are protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights of ourselves or our business partners / suppliers / advertisers. You may not use these materials or any Jagex Product except in accordance with these terms and conditions and for personal (i.e. non-commercial) use only.

I'd argue that it's not a fair use, though I personally would prefer the news section to remain. The personal/non-commercial phrase is a bit of a problem, too, but my point is that Mark (Tedjuh) is in the process of acquiring permission from Jagex to make unfair uses of their copyrighted work so long as it is properly cited, and he's received two responses from actual employees instead of the usual automated responses. As I've said, solid permission will solve any possible legal issues, so I'd rather this issue wait until permission has been received, but I'm certain everybody's patience with fair use and copyright is worn completely away, so I'd just like to point out that, should Jagex give a negative and tell us not to use the works unfairly, a lot of content will have to be removed. Comment - I moved "If it is a newspost, the description of the newspost as on the RuneScape homepage including the picture if it has one. These can also be uploaded to the wiki." from "What to include" to "Exemptions of the rule" as it is an exemtion of the rule. Matt (t) 02:24, September 17, 2010 (UTC)
