Yesterday, User:The last username left was given a one-year global block by User:Uberfuzzy for his actions in the IRC. TLUL had nicked and grouped the nicks |ChristineV| and _ChristineV_. This was meant to be temporary, and no malice or impersonation was intended. The real ChristineV, who never actually requested the nicks be returned, immediately called in Uberfuzzy, who promptly issued a global block. Yes, a global block. For one year. That means that he now cannot edit any wiki for a duration of one year.

I, along with most Wikians in the IRC today, believe that this is completely unjustified and a flagrant abuse of power. Firstly, issues dealing with the IRC should stay in the IRC; they should not spill over into the wiki. Secondly, while TLUL's actions may not have been the wisest, a block for a duration of one year from every wiki is quite obviously over the top. Finally, Uberfuzzy told TLUL that what he "[didn't] want to get in the middle of what ever beef or drama is going on between" TLUL and Christine. Blocking him is exactly the opposite of not getting between the two.

Uberfuzzy claims that what TLUL did amounted to harassment, and justified the block by using a clause found in the Terms of Use. I quote:

The Company may terminate your account, delete your profile and any content or information that you have posted on the Service and/or prohibit you from using or accessing the Service for any reason, or no reason, at any time in its sole discretion, with or without notice.
Membership section

Obviously, the terms of use give Uberfuzzy the legal right to do so. However, this is an unjustified action that borders on authoritarianism. Thus, I would like to request your support in asking Uberfuzzy or another member of Wikia's staff to remove User:The last username left's block from the RuneScape Wiki. --LiquidTalk 02:04, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Actions on the IRC never warrent action on-wiki. This whole situation wouldn't have happened if Christine acted appropriately, and requested that her nicks be given back, but nevertheless it did and needs to be dealt with. A global block on wiki is not the appropriate way to deal with it. Simply asking him to give them back in a non-confrontational way would have been. ajr 02:07, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

I'd call that more complete abuse of the ability to globally block someone than a misunderstanding, tbh. ajr 02:13, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Strong support - A global block for one year on Wikia because of something that happened via IRC? That's just outrageous. Something that happens over an IRC channel shouldn't effect anything on Wikia. At the least it could result in a block on the IRC channel, but even then, that is seriously pushing it. AzurisProblem, wiki? 02:11, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Support - He has not done anything wrong. Blocking him globally for a year was completely out of order. The worst punishment that should have been handed out was a temporary ban from the IRC channel, and even that is really pushing it. --Callofduty4 02:13, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Extreme support plus TLUL did a dumbass move, sure. I could see a 1-3 day block plus maybe 1 week or so on the IRC if that is possible. But Uberfuzzy went so overboard that I would like to ask for a central wiki review of his actions. If he went this far in this case I wonder where else this guy has overstepped himself. TLUL has absolutely no record what so ever of vandalizing (although he broke the wiki with some weird ass code on his userpage once, so maybe he could be accused of not being cautious enough, but barely that since it only happened once). We need to take what ever steps we can to undo this extreme injustice. And maybe request Uberfuzzy not be a person who handles things dealing with the RuneScape wiki. There is no way we can trust a guy who pulls that kind of move.--Degenret01 02:20, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Strong support - Ridiculous. TLUL has always been a fantastic contributor, kind to everybody. Uberfuzzy should not have been so quick to use his power, and should have looked into the situation further. Nobody can ever talk anything out anymore. Again, bad actions taken in the IRC should not affect rights on the wiki. I'm ashamed a Wikia staff member would be so brutal in butting into our business, and doing it an unfair way, for that matter. Don't try to make excuses. Let's say I'm a soldier. I'm clearing a hostile building and I shoot one of my fellow soldiers. I don't get to do that. I have to be at the top of my game always-I don't get to make mistakes. Granted this situation is less grim, but the same principle applies. HaloTalk 13:23, October 25, 2010 (UTC)
You can't accidentally phalanxblock someone. And if you do, you don't then go and phalanxblock their bot, and then get a member of the VSTF to block their IP. And you especially don't do it for a year. ajr 13:34, October 25, 2010 (UTC)
By accidental I meant more about the decision of blocking or not. Granted, the one year is extremely harsh and can't really be put down to different viewpoints :/ That soldier reference sounds a bit different but it's actually kinda similar, it becomes hard to always "shoot" accurately after a long time of constantly "shooting" accurately. If you do accidentally "miss" and wound/kill a teammate your company/troop isn't going to "shoot" you or yell at you. They know how hard it is and how easy it is to hit someone on your side among the "enemy masses". When you realize you have accidentally shot someone you make amends and apologise to them or their next of kin as the case may be. You apologize and hope to god they can forgive you. It is, as you said, a bit less grave and just a bit different in terms of stakes. - [Pharos] iPhone Edit 14:12, October 25, 2010 (UTC)
There was no way that it was an accident, in any part of it. As made obvious by his actions and response, Uberfuzzy intentionally blocked him. ajr 14:50, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Support - While Uberfuzzy did block TLUL, I hope it was only an error in his judgment than a biased block. I do not know the circumstances that brought TLUL's block minus the opening pieces by Liquidhelium, I would hope that a transcript of the IRC chat at the time is shown or where the block took place (I don't see it here or at Community Central, unless I am blind). Blocking his IP and bot is also a step too far. Not only does this prevent very helpful contributions to the wiki, it also hinders one of the most helpful bots on this wiki. I would expect a response from Uberfuzzy within the next 24 hours, or whenever he gets to work. I would hope that The block gets reduced and at best removed. Albeit using Christine's nick wasn't the smartest thing in the world to do, it should not have come to this. I am glad to see this community stand up for one of it's contributors when an unjust block has been applied. Ryan PM 13:56, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

It seems odd to me that Charitwo then picked up where Uberfuzzy left off and blocked his IP. I wouldn't expect this sort of "misjudgment" from two very experienced Wikians. --Callofduty4 14:40, October 25, 2010 (UTC)
Lost all respect for Uberfuzzy. A ten minute run shouldn't equate to a year long block. It was also the most idiotic and self-destructive event Uberfuzzy took himself into, this would also include Charitwo's subsequent blocks toward TLUL. Since Uberfuzzy last logged in at 2010-10-24T06:59:18, I doubt he has seen this. Ryan PM 16:36, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

I agree. When I heard about the PM, I thought "wow, maybe Uberfuzzy was actually justified in doing this". But alas, seeing this makes it all the worse. It also shows some favoritism for Christine, imo, since it would seem that after getting an unsatisfactory response from freenode (basically, TLUL didn't do anything wrong) is when he blocked. ajr 18:14, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

No, you're wrong. The "ban" was merely to prevent him from auto-rejoining, but he continued to then bring in at least 6 other socks into the channel, making a need for a legit "ban" for all of 15 minutes. Christine 16:31, October 26, 2010 (UTC)
