So some time ago I managed to extract some configs file from the cache and I discovered that (items) config are stored in 146 (there may be a few more) files, most of the config is hashed (idk what`s the official term for that) but names, examine and right click options are visible take a look:

So I can extract items config files from all language and I found a software (BeyondCompare)that can highlight any word change so I can easily found items translations.

Now what I want to do is put something like this at the end of items/npc articles:

Language Name Examine
French [placeholder] [placeholder]
German [placeholder] [placeholder]
Spanish [placeholder] [placeholder]
Portuguese [placeholder] [placeholder]

So guys what do you think of this? I won`t disclode how I get these here but, if you want to help I can maybe found a way to send you a text file.

Any action concerning this project will be registered here. Also I plan to make so language name redirect to english page if possible. Manpaint55 (talk) 00:21, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

Discussion

Comment - Sorry for not getting back to you about your message on my talk page, I was a bit busy at the time.

With regards to what you've pulled from the cache, it's evident whatever you used to read the file doesn't handle the encoding used for these files. There might be someone who frequents our discord that might be able to help with that, the cache has been used for similar purposes before.

I don't think the examines hold much value for articles. I'd suggest they were more suited to the other language versions of the wiki, but afaik the vast majority of them are long since inactive. Using the names as redirects would definitely be something useful, Cook Me Plox did some work on that a couple of years back already. cqm 07:39, 17 Sep 2016 (UTC) (UTC)

Ok so if understand examines would take too much time for nothing, so I will just go for names and redirects, also do you know at wich exact item Cook Me Plox stopped? Manpaint55 (talk) 14:11, September 17, 2016 (UTC)
I am reverting your unapproved additions. This thread has not been closed yet - we have not decided where to add translations, how to add translations, or if we even want to add translations. Your method of copy and pasting a table on every single page is also inefficient (and we use the wikitable class, not article-table). --Iiii I I I 16:08, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

Well as the most and unique active user on the french wiki we (others wiki) we will never beat this wiki, its also important to ppl that speak other languages to learn some basic english it just help in life in general. However some items aren`t direct translation here an example: normally in french prayer potion should be called potion de prière but its called potion du dévot (devotion potion) instead. Also as I can see most ppl in others languages (except french f2per that absolutely don`t want to use this wiki for some obscure reason) use this wiki.
The only thing that could revive those wiki would be something that copy this wiki and translate it automaticly (with correct in-game words) but I honestly don`t think such a thing is possible.
Manpaint55 (talk) 18:27, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

Oppose - I can sympathize that non-English content is non-existent or woefully outdated. Even if we chose to include non-English content here, it would face the same problem: lack of editors. One thing that might be worthwhile is using the cache to update/maintain the "other language" links for each item (in some automated way, of course). It would be up to the editors on the other wikis to make sure the pages actually existed. (FWIW, as I've said before, I much prefer linking between languages in the target language, e.g., linking to this wiki in English instead of all the non-English redirects, likewise linking to French in French, German in German, etc.) It seems reasonable to me for this wiki to host a page, probably a Project: page (or set of Project: pages, because one page would get too big), listing all the item names with translations extracted from the cache (just names, not examine texts). Still, it could be misleading, because those pages, especially for new items, probably aren't going to exist in other languages. --Saftzie (talk) 19:36, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

Comment - Hi, one of the admins for the Portuguese/Brazilian wiki here. I can say for sure we will most likely never have all the content this wiki has, RuneScape has simply too much content. However we do need more active editors, to try and keep up with the most essential things. Manpaint's idea of an automatic translator could work if we created some sort of {{Autotranslated}} to let people know that article could use revisions and corrections. Right now trying to keep the wiki fed with new content feels like a lost battle, as RS adds content faster than our limited amount of editors can edit. Could my suggestion be considered and discussed? Either we do an automatic Translation project, or we hire an army of translators. As for the idea of bringing non-english content to this wiki, it would just encourage inactivity in foreign wikis.
Crowborn (talk) 19:56, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

Speaking of that, aren`t the DarkScape wiki was a copy of this one and user manually removed MTX mentions? Manpaint55 (talk) 19:57, September 17, 2016 (UTC)
I recall listening to an interview with someone who did English-Japanese translation for a living. His (extreme IMO) point of view was that translation was a creative process. If machines could do it well, humans might as well stop writing anything (including, e.g. novels). I disagree with the extremity of his statement, but I agree that most translation involves interpretation. It isn't just a grammatical puzzle. A machine translated wiki would be useless. --Saftzie (talk) 20:03, September 17, 2016 (UTC)
Also, this wiki is updated continuously. Which version of any wiki page would get machine translated? If the English page is updated, should it overwrite any human translation because it has new information? Probably not. --Saftzie (talk) 20:07, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

Comment - Excellent point, now i see that would never work. Still, we need a way of dealing with translations. All foreign wikis (with the possible exception of fi and nl, because those guys are beasts) are in dire need of help. I wonder if we could find a good amount of portuguese-speaking people, not necessarily from portugal/brazil but also foreign translators, to help us with this. Crowborn (talk) 20:12, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

I guess we would have to do translating and data transcribing manually but even then we would need editors, not to mention that thing like GE watch would be broke and even some admin of those wiki have quit long ago (the admin of french wiki quit because of EOC). Manpaint55 (talk) 20:27, September 17, 2016 (UTC)
You should request adminship for that wiki. That's how i got adminship at Darkwood Wiki, we needed an active admin and ours had become inactive. If you are the only active editor, you deserve it. Also, don't worry about not having more editors. From my experience, even without active editors, you still have a lot of views per day, which should encourage everyone working in foreign wikis to keep on working. I already do that 2 months ago, however im still waiting a reply. Also just saying but there around 20k (accorinding to build 833 wich is around prif batch 2 release) npcs, granted some npc are the same but technically different but still. I still think we should add translations because some things are not especially covered by those wiki and some name are very different than the english one (e.g: Plague`s end in french is The Time of the Elves). Still, it's work to be done on the other wikis, not here. The idea someone suggested above, to have a page with all names in translations compared to the original names (im sure we can get this info from cache) could be a great idea, so we would know how to name content even if players couldn't get acess to it. I, for example, don't play RS3, so i base myself in this wiki to translate and often times can't name things as they correctly show up in my language.
Also, try requesting adminship to Wikia itself, detailing how admins are gone and you are very active, instead of requesting it to your admin. If he's gone, he obviously can't reply. Crowborn (talk) 22:11, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

How you can do a wikia admin right request?, for the translation im assuming you mean something like this (but with link that lead to respective wiki) right?

Manpaint55 (talk) 22:35, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

As for the translation yes that's what i mean, with all languages listed. However, updating the page with new links as each new page is created could become a problem. Maybe let's leave it without links, as pages already have interlanguage links on the bottom.
To request adoption of a wiki, go here: http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Adopt, read the whole article, then click "International adoptions request links" and the french page. If your admin is long gone and you are active and helpful, you will probably get it. Remember, an admin needs to answer questions in the community and overall be very helpful. Only editing isn't enough. Crowborn (talk) 22:46, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

Yeah if there are a community... anyway thanks for the link. I will wait others people approval before doing the page.

Manpaint55 (talk) 22:59, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

Wish you luck! It's good to see the other foreign wikis also doing their best to keep up. Don't forget to come to this wiki and add interlanguage links to your created pages (http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Interlanguage_link). That allows all wikis to see you have a page for that, link to you, and attracts "lost" french users. Crowborn (talk) 23:09, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, I figured out how to do it! So yeah unless opposision the translations project is cancelled. However I have one last question, it is possible to include GE watch in the french wiki?

Manpaint55 (talk) 23:25, September 17, 2016 (UTC)

By GE watch you mean an automated way of keeping track of Grand Exchange prices? I'm sure it's possible, our coder at the PT wiki did it. But i don't know how you could do it or how to add it to a wiki. Try asking around. Crowborn (talk) 00:52, September 18, 2016 (UTC)
