So its copying Jagex, but I think it would be cool to have a tip of the week. We could have it dismissible so people won't be annoyed at seeing it all the time. We'll come up with an ever growing list of them I am sure, and once a week change it out. Or make it random the way our Featured articles are, people can click "next" or dismiss. Is a "next option possible? Sorry, I wouldn't be able to do any of the coding requirements, but if anyone who can likes the idea lets talk about it.--Degenret01 05:52, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Support Cuz I like it, it will offer useful tips that people may not in general be aware of.--Degenret01 05:52, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Support -Great idea and we could put it on the main page and under the cvu in the my home section of users if possible.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 06:03, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Question - Where are you putting tip of the week?? Mainpage?? Community Portal?? Unicorn horn dust.png Evil Yanks talk 08:02, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Conditional Support - Would be a good idea, and helpful to many users. It could also spark curiosity in viewers who don't edit, who may decide to try the tip out and edit. Although I'd like to know where this would be placed. By the way, I'm sure I can help with coding. Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 08:09, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Changed to Conditional Support, as I think on the main page, Community Portal, etc would be better than at the top of every page. Too much crap at the top of the page can be bad. I also think "Tip of the Day" would be better, ONLY if it changes automatically, and we can add more tips to the feed every once in awhile. Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 10:11, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

I was thinking at the top of a page, just like our current notice is when you log on, but there for everyone. Other ideas are of course welcome by all means, lets brain storm a bit.--Degenret01 08:21, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

I just though that maybe it would be better to be a tip of the day so it changes at 00:00GMT every day that way people would look what the new tip is everytime they go onto the site instead of seeing it and forgetting about it and then taking no notice of it. Plus this way more tips could be used because i think there would be more than 52 tips every year. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 08:27, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Support - As long as it's on the Community Portal or Mainpage. I don't want to see it on the top of every single page. bad_fetustalk 09:53, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Support - but as long as they are good tips not just the rubbish ones that jagex gives out like "Dont forget to set your bankpin :)" Things that are actually useful. Slayer Timwac talk Fire cape.png 10:16, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Support - I could use this :D Dragon helm.pngSupergrunt8Dragon 2h sword old.png 14:32, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Support - In my opinion, it's a great idea since I could have used tips way back in the day. :D I think it should be placed on the front page or the Community Portal, with the next option being best, or just setting it onto random. Zaros symbol.pngChaos Monk Talk SignCoins 250.png 14:39, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Just to clarify Degenret, you are talking about tips for editing the wiki, and not tips for playing RuneScape, correct? I didn't find that stated anywhere though most people seem to assume that's what you mean. Endasil (Talk) @  19:16, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Support - True, it's not clear whether the tips will be wiki-related or RuneScape-related. Either way, I think it's a nice idea.  Tien  20:20, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Should be a useful addition to the wikia. BerserkHackr 23:15, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Certainly sounds useful for all those wikian newbies who need some help getting off their feet. I don't know how useful it'd be for all of us experienced wikians *waves vaguely around discussion*--Cheers, Off-hand ascension crossbow.pngYodaAscension crossbow.png 01:06, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

Comment I had initially meant the tips as applied to ingame, but editing tips could be cool also I think. If enough people like it, then we can start coming up with a list of tips, and we can decide where it should be displayed.--Degenret01 01:46, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

Then I could only support Wiki editing tips (as long as they're non intrusive an easily dismissible). I think tips as to in-game improvement are outside of the spirit of the Wiki which should strive to be informative yet objective. Such tips would be too corruptable to opinion. Unless we kept it to something like "Did you know...that you can (blah blah)". Endasil (Talk) @  03:43, April 9, 2010 (UTC)
Definitely limit the tips to facts. I imagine this would work similar to featured pics a bit, in that people submit tips, then we decide which ones are factual enough, and written well enough, to join the list of approved ones.--Degenret01 08:16, April 9, 2010 (UTC)
The idea popped in my head when I saw that a player dropped like 30 tomatoes individually while farming. I thought "man, use em on the leprechaun so you only have to drop once" (leprechaun notes all farmed stuff now, you were away during that update I believe)--Degenret01 08:20, April 9, 2010 (UTC)
So rather then tips of the week, we should just issue Wiki Tips and put all of them in a rotation or choice option like the pics or user of the month. Tips of the Week sounds like we will be forcing users to create new tips every week forcing constant updates and new tips and discussion all the time. If we get it on a simple rotation, we can be a bit more lenient on how long we need to discuss new tips. 06:03, April 10, 2010 (UTC)
Yea, I think the way to go would all approved tips would be in a list that you could randomly get one of. I don't see why we would take one out if it was useful. So tip of the week isn't really an appropriate name, but its name is the last thing to worry about.  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Degenret01 (talk) on 12:52, April 10, 2010 (UTC).

Closed - There is consensus to create this feature, though another discussion is needed to draw out what exactly the feature will be. Therefore, this thread is intentionally not archived. Degen should propose exactly what the feature is intended to do, where it will be, will we be using wiki tips or RS tips? Please do that in a new section below. How it's done

Sorry, couldnt resist the title....but it should consist of tips coming from the users of the RS Wikia, and not jagex's tips of the week, as we already cant decide if we want updates articles.....but back to the topic.......the next button he suggested could be a javascript action scrolling through a list of tips, and the hide could be a collapsible wikitable. Discuss.

Where does it go

I think almost all places were suggested but nothing is set on that. I think he ideal is for everyone to have a chance to see it, not just logged in users. Is there a way to set that and have it dismissable as the Site notice is? If we can't make it dismissable then we would need to decide on a different place for it.--Degenret01 00:00, May 10, 2010 (UTC)

I am going to look through special:Allmessages to see if it's possible to add it to Special:Userlogin so users see it when they log in, if you happen to like that idea. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 00:07, May 10, 2010 (UTC)
What about [[MediaWiki:Anonnotice]]? ⁓ Hello71 00:22, May 10, 2010 (UTC)
Anonnotice cannot be more than a sentence because of where it appears (log out and you will see). I found the page I was looking for at MediaWiki:Loginsuccess, though even then it may not be what we want. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 00:25, May 10, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - If we were to do this, we should add all the tips to MediaWiki:Tips. Then we could easily view all the past tips and when they were active using the tips widget: <widget>Tips</widget> ShinyUnown T | C | E 02:01, May 10, 2010 (UTC)

Would everyone visiting the wiki be able to see it? And be able to dismiss, even random I.P.s?--Degenret01 02:03, May 10, 2010 (UTC)
I don't think the sitenotice/annonotice or anywhere at the top of every page is good. I'd oppose that. Those 2 features are for announcements, and we already are overloaded with links, text and other crap at the top of the page. Chicken7 >talk 05:57, May 10, 2010 (UTC)
Only people who have the tips widget would see the tips widget. That means only users. But this would only be for looking at tips from the past and present if people wanted. ShinyUnown T | C | E 11:05, May 10, 2010 (UTC)

Question - Since the discussion is "closed", I'm putting this here. Who would this be directed at? Noobs, Seasoned, somewhere in-between, who? Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 06:07, May 10, 2010 (UTC)

I don't see any need for consensus to add it to MediaWiki:Tips as the widget would go unused otherwise. However, as for a more "useful" place to put it, we could consider it putting it [[MediaWiki:Community-corner|here]], in a small section on the main page, or within the community portal. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 16:00, May 16, 2010 (UTC)

I think the corner news place might work. We barely have any tips yet so it isn't worth adding at this point.--Degenret01 02:51, May 17, 2010 (UTC)

Tip submissions

We have to see if we can even come up with enough to get this thing going. To save on this thread being bumped if it doesn't need to be, I put in a section on one of my sandboxes for ideas.User:Degenret01/Sandbox3 Lets put our ideas there for now, if it starts taking off we can move it to the actual project page, which I don't think we should make until there is a bit more than what we have.--Degenret01 02:03, May 10, 2010 (UTC)

Request for closure - Already implimented. Ajraddatz Talk 19:50, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Negative on closure Not yet decided where the tips will go once we have them. And there is a serious lack of tips so this seems to be a fail project at the moment.--Degenret01 06:45, May 28, 2010 (UTC)

Perhaps we need a link to your sandbox somewhere else so more people can see it? Currently, the only way people can visit the sandbox and add tips is by reading this thread.  Tien  14:13, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Re-request closure - Everything this thread wants has been achieved, except for actual implementation. We can make a new thread then if we want (Tip of the Week launch or something) 222 talk 23:52, July 2, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Surely we can implement it now? We have a lot of tips that can help now. Santa hat.png Powers38 おはようヾ(´・ω・`) 03:17, July 3, 2010 (UTC)

Support closure and implementation - It had defiantly been long enough and we have probably 20-30 tips.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 03:21, July 3, 2010 (UTC)
