Our templates are ugly. I propose a redesign partly inspired by Wikipedia - a consistent look for article templates, maintenance templates, file templates, and our welcome notice.

The basic layout:

  • background color of #f8f0cf
  • border on the left of #b19e7d
    • templates that require some sort of action (d, merge, etc.) will be #cbdae2 and #45697D
    • templates that mark obsoleteness or historicalness (obsolete, obfile, historical) will be #cfcfcf and #464646
    • file templates (AA, transparency) will be #cfd8eb and #617ebc
  • the first sentence bolded, containing the main idea
  • succeeding sentences made smaller
    • templates with a reason parameter (cleanup, d, etc.) will have the parameter hidden if it is empty

The examples: *[ The templates (without parameters filled)] *[ Possible usage cases (with parameters filled)] *[ Image templates] *[ Welcome notice] I have not recreated every single template under the categories listed above, but the ones I've done should be enough to get the general idea across. Userboxes, navboxes, infoboxes, image licenses, vandalism warning messages, etc. will not be changed.

(The classes I use on my wiki might be a bit different that the ones we actually use here, so if you want to preview it on this wiki you'll probably have to change some stuff.)

I personally prefer text-only templates, but it's up to you guys. Suggestions are welcome. Obama better win, dammit. --Iiii I I I 01:34, November 7, 2012 (UTC)

addendum - I've decided to do infoboxes as well. The templates I've already made will be recolored slightly. Also, Obama won. --Iiii I I I 19:05, November 18, 2012 (UTC)

Support mostly but a Q - No pictures? MolMan 01:36, November 7, 2012 (UTC)

They can be added in but I'd like to hear others' opinions first. --Iiii I I I 03:19, November 7, 2012 (UTC)

Mostly support - The general idea is very good! However, there are no previews of image problems in your new templates. For example, the white 'i' in a blue circle is pixelated for No AA, it's ugly like JPEG for Jpeg and so on.

Per Fswe1 below. I think it's a nice quick preview. I don't feel like reading words too much when deciding what to do with an image, you see.  a proofreader ▸  04:09, November 8, 2012 (UTC)
Added images to obfile, AA, and transparency. --Iiii I I I 04:41, November 8, 2012 (UTC)

Strong oppose - Sorry, but that's just plain ugly. In addition, some templates (like file maintenance, obsoleteness, etc.) have their images removed, which help experienced users see what the template is for at one gaze. The differentiated colours also do this. With all templates having a set of colours with three possibilities, this becomes harder. Also, it would look terrible in monobook. I say "don't fix what isn't broken". User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 12:31, November 7, 2012 (UTC)

Who cares about monobook? Our visitors see the Wikia skin, so we should worry more about that than whether or not it looks fine in the monobook skin. You can override the color choices made in this thread in your monobook.css. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 15:07, November 7, 2012 (UTC)
Still, no differentiation makes recognition of templates at glance impossible. Also, isn't this the same-ish discussion as we had here? User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 16:34, November 7, 2012 (UTC)
Just to point out the mains reasons why that forum failed was due to terrible loading times, no real connection to the wiki's theme and difficulty reading the text. The templates here seem to avoid all of these problems. cqm 15:32, 8 Nov 2012 (UTC) (UTC)
"no differentiation" - there are four different styles, all clearly defined above: the main #f1deb9, the action #cbdae2, the obsolete #cfcfcf, and the file #cfd8eb. the giant bold word on the left also helps with identification. there should be no confusion unless you are nooby. --Iiii I I I 05:14, November 9, 2012 (UTC)
is that why i'm confused Ronan Talk 08:40, November 9, 2012 (UTC)
yeah --Iiii I I I 11:23, November 9, 2012 (UTC)
Four is nothing. Almost every template looks different now. I really don't see the point of this. It is that exceptional case where consistency is bad. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 14:30, November 9, 2012 (UTC)

Support - I prefer a standard look. Besides, you can identify the templates quickly by looking it's picture on the left. Explore and enjoy the world! TIMMMO Work it with all my heart!++Discuss Sign 16:20, November 9, 2012 (UTC)

Support - I love the concept of redesigning the templates. Kudos! Although I don't agree there should be a generalised welcome notice and that should be left for the user to decide.

Also, I think what Fswe1 is trying to say is that templates like Incomplete and Under Construction could be differentiated with the images, even though they have the same bgcolor. So, an easy solution is to just re-add images to the template, in place of the bolded text or keep both, if possible. --Alchez 09:47, November 10, 2012 (UTC)

We already have a standard welcome notice for users and IPs. My proposal simply changes the colors. Users are free to create their own templates, just like they are now. --Iiii I I I 16:53, November 10, 2012 (UTC)
Since the discussion is about template colours, I did mean colours when I said generalised. To clarify, I don't support changing welcome notices to standard colours, because that decision should be placed in the user's hands. --Alchez 16:58, November 10, 2012 (UTC)
The welcome notice already has a standard color. --Iiii I I I 17:01, November 10, 2012 (UTC)
Oh, wait, your proposal doesn't mean compulsion of a welcome notice for all users. *facepalm* I feel so stupid now. Sorry.. --Alchez 17:06, November 10, 2012 (UTC)

Support but - I like all of the templates, except the welcome template. I feel like the image is owning half of the template, when we want to inform of what to do in the RS wiki. I'd like to suggest maybe the image go top right, some text going under it. Thx, — Jr Mime (talk) 17:12, November 10, 2012 (UTC)

didn't realize the logo took up that much space. I have the rail hidden, so it looks okay when the template spans the whole page. How about centered? --Iiii I I I 18:15, November 10, 2012 (UTC)
That looks very good, I like it :D. — Jr Mime (talk) 18:17, November 10, 2012 (UTC)

Closed - Everything's good. Also, Obama won.
