I think a TeamSpeak server would help the wiki here. What it will basically be is a IRC channel or clan chat for the wiki, with voices. I have pre-written up a page for it so it could be understood. Please leave suggestions, comments, and support/no support.

TeamSpeak Server

I have created a TeamSpeak Server for wikians and other RuneScape members to talk on. TeamSpeak has recently released TeamSpeak 3 which in my mind, is now ahead of the popular VOIP server Ventrilo. This is why I picked TS. The TeamSpeak client can be downloaded here: As a user, you will only need to download the Client, the server does not needed to be downloaded. TeamSpeak is all free and of no charge to you, all you need is a microphone to communicate with others in the server. Or if you do not have a mic and just want to listen you can do that also.

Once the client has been downloaded and installed you will now be able to connect to the server. First run the client by double clicking the TeamSpeak 3 Client. At the top left of the window will be a connections tab, press that and then press Connect.

Now you will need to input the server info which is listed below:

Server is currently running.

  • Port: 9987

See the official page for updated info: [[RuneScape:Off-site/TeamSpeak]] (There is no password, so leave the field blank.)

Please use your Wiki name for your Nickname on the TS server. Then press Connect.

If the server is running you will then connect to my server. There are several different rooms you can join and talk with others, the only restricted room is the Admin/Moderator Room. I will do my best to keep the server running 24/7. The server is based off of my computer, so the only times when the server will go offline is when my computer is off. But I do keep my computer running 24/7 unless I need to reboot.

To keep spammers, unruly users and arguments to a minimal there will be channel operators appointed to take the appropriate actions. All sysops will have Channel Operating. Channel operators will have the powers to kick, move, or ban users out of the Server. There will be very specific rules the operators must follow to use their abilities. As always all server admins and operators must follow all rules. If there is a disruption and there are no Channel Operators online you may right click the user and send a complaint. You can also mute the user for the time being so you cannot hear them.

The TS server was made to easily communicate with others in a friendly manner. To keep the channel this way there will be rules everyone must follow in order to keep their privilege of using the server.

  • Be courteous to all users. That means do not interrupt, harass, embarrass, insult, trash-talk or be-little someone.
  • Do not spam. Although it maybe funny at the time, it won't be so funny after getting kicked.
  • Push-to-talk must remain on. Push to talk refers to the option of pushing and holding down a button to talk. The alternative is 'Voice-sensitive', which activates any time your microphone picks up noise (i.e. breathing, coughing, and other unpleasant sounds no one wants to hear.)

More rules maybe added as time goes by, but I do hope I do not have to add them, it's a game, let us all have fun!

Requests for Channel Operator

Sysops ONLY

All sysops may request the Channel Operator permissions. All other requests will be denied.

To make this TeamSpeak server official. All sysops will have abilities to keep everything going smoothly. It is exactly like the CC, but with voices.

Server is up and running, see above for new info!

Neutral - While I'm probably not going to use this, I don't see what harm this could do. Unless you want to make this an official thing on RuneScape:Off-site, I'm not sure why you'd need approval for this. ʞooɔ 01:05, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Well I guess this would be a type of thing for an official approval for off site. I just didn't really know how to bring this about to the wiki. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 01:11, June 15, 2010 (UTC)
You should probably add that to your proposal. ʞooɔ 02:14, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Why not? Seems interesting Coelacanth0794 01:14, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Support - I had originally planned on setting up my own Ventrilo server, however recent IRL events have caused me to push that back. I had been unaware of TS3, however, from what many of my in-the-know friends have told me, TS3 operates really well. It's a great chance to talk to people and team up for D&D's/games, so I'd encourage everyone to join. Clean cog.png The Wretched Automaton TalkClean cog.png 01:19, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I am having troubles with forwarding and opening my ports to allow access to others to the server... xScoobsx Talk Contribs 04:57, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Per all. Only problem would be too many people talking, or having almost nobody in there.   Swizz Talk   Events!   15:19, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - We already have a Ventrilo server and not everyone can download TeamSpeak. What is the point of having this when Ventrilo works perfectly fine already? Andrew talk 15:30, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Unless I am mistaken, the ventrillo server is down/defunct/no longer operational, and has been for some time now. At least, that's the reason it was removed from RS:OS. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 16:56, June 15, 2010 (UTC)
I haven't read anywhere that we already had one, otherwise I would have joined it. And what do you mean not everyone can download TeamSpeak? Windows, Mac, and Linux users can download it, see here. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 18:22, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Pending - Can anyone confirm that Ventrilo server is down? bad_fetustalk 19:34, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Its down and has been for a while Slayer Timwac talk Fire cape.png 19:35, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Although i Support having a voice server (either ventrilo teamspeak or mumble) i Oppose that this will be run off of one persons computer and we will be limited to when that user is online, that kind of seems absurd but as a temporary option while we have no other server i dont really see why we shouldnt allow this Slayer Timwac talk Fire cape.png 19:38, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

It will not be limited to when I am only online... I keep my computer running constantly, throughout the night, so that means that the server would be also be running constantly, unless my computer decides to restart or pull a trick. But I would set my computer to hopefully not do that, and make the server run on start up. Otherwise the only other option is for the wiki to pay for a hosted server, which can cost from 6$ a month and up, depending on how many slots we will need. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 19:44, June 15, 2010 (UTC)
Paying for a hosted server is a much better idea. bad_fetustalk 19:45, June 15, 2010 (UTC)
Does the wiki have the funding for that? xScoobsx Talk Contribs 20:04, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Update - Server is up and running if anyone wants to take a look, new updated info is above. And a proposal. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 03:58, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

Taking down server for a couple minutes to test run on start up.

Neutral - We already had a Ventrilo server that someone set up, but in general, I disliked Ventrilo. This sounds cool, but I'm a little wary of two things:

  1. Hosting the server on your desktop computer.
    • I think hosting it on a little Linux server could work better in terms of the rebooting.
  2. Having an IP address to connect to.
    • It'd probably be best to set up something with DynDNS, just in case your IP address changes.

I'll have to check it out first. I'm a regular user and I approve this message.  TLUL Talk - Contribs 05:14, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

Oh, and it's still not working. I'm a regular user and I approve this message.  TLUL Talk - Contribs 05:25, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
It's up now. I was testing my computer restarting and if the server would start back up. Which it does now, in the rare case my computer decides to restart the server will start itself on start-up. To answer your points:
  1. It is either this way or the wiki paying money monthly for the server. Why not take what you can and be satisfied with it? (Not directing it towards you, just a rhetorical question.)
  2. My computer starts the server on start-up now in the event it does restart.
  3. Referring back to my first point/bullet, it is either that or buying into a hosting service where the wiki will pay monthly.
  4. I have my computer set up on a static IP, this means it will not change, my ISP has given me a permanent IP unless I change back to a dynamic. (A DNS server/setup)

I hope that answers any worries you have. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 05:44, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

Support and Comment - Teamspeak is pretty good, cross-platform, updated way more than ventrillo, last update for it was 21 months ago. I used to run a teamspeak 2 server from home and had a highest uptime of 30+ days, as much TS3 is new, its still beta and as such, unstable. I also heard that the current server is ran from a laptop... which is not the best thing ever lol. I ran my TS2 server from a headless Dell desktop running windows xp pro with a 350mhz processor, or than the connection speed was a max of 20KB/s upload, things were great. Be nice if the current server runner mentions whats he's running it on, connection upload speed, which server beta, and knowledge of Teamspeak admining. Cuase i could totally host this, with a dynamic ip dns service, TSperlMod(which rocks) but all on the stable TS2.Dayofswords 05:54, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

Just a note, this is my brother and we're in the same house. He's does not edit much,so if you wan to ask him something, you can ask me that same thing and I'll tell him (I am on MUCH more than him). Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 05:58, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
Talked to him, hes got everything going fine for it. but a dynamic ip service would be great for it. Dayofswords 06:08, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for that, I do agree that the server will run fine as it has for the first 8 hours. Now why would a dynamic IP be more suitable? I have a static IP that stays the same, constantly. Doesn't a dynamic IP change so the users would have to constantly change the server to connect to...? xScoobsx Talk Contribs 06:15, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
Dynamic = same forever, static = may change. Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 06:18, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

Lol I fail. Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 06:55, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
Most home connections have dynamic ips, so i just guessed you have one, but if you know you dont, then you dont need a service for it, you could just add the ip to a subdomain of a dynamic ip service(without using their client), or you could have a subdomain on an already own domain, doesnt the RS Wikia have a redirecting domain? like .. uh.. or something? if so could be so people don't have to remember the IP if they use a different computer, also looks nicer =p Dayofswords 07:03, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
Well then it would be up to the owners of the wiki to have an extension like that. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 07:31, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

Update to article - I added a picture at the top so you guys can see the new client with people connected to the server. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 06:33, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Sounds great. I'll work on the OS icon later. Chicken7 >talk 06:46, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

That would be awesome. Could you also design a icon for this spot on the client, the top right. I can make it so when you press it, the homepage of wiki will come up. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 06:56, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
Do you mean where the faded TeamSpeak3 logo is in your screenshot above? If so, I think just a faded RSWiki logo would be best. If you'd rather something different, I'm no expert at that sort of thing, so maybe you'd need to ask someone else. Lol Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 07:15, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
It would be right above where you are talking about, could you link me to the file of that image please? xScoobsx Talk Contribs 07:31, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
I uploaded it, how does it look. (I updated picture at top.) That's all the bigger it's going to get. What if we did the picture of the wiki's favicon? I'll try now... xScoobsx Talk Contribs 07:53, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
I added a transparency to the favicon and it looks great, see above in the new picture. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 08:06, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose changed to neutral - Per tim, if it it running of one computer than something could happen (like the computer breaking) to that easily, paying for one would be better if we could somehow get some funding for it.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 06:53, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

I don't understand why you do not just say neutral? If the wiki cannot fund a host monthly then why not do the next best thing? xScoobsx Talk Contribs 06:56, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
Also, what could happen? Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 06:57, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
Like the computer breaking, and i am opposing and not neutral because this is for team speak not for a internet hosted one.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png
Yes, what could happen? The most it would be down is 5 min. The wikia is down more then 5 min at times and doesn't allow editing. And what if it is down for more than a couple hours whatever the reason maybe? Everyone can still go back to the normal CC like we already are until it is back up. I'll let you know I just bought this computer no more than a month ago... And if it did break I have another computer I can transfer the server over to in under 20 min, plus Evil1888 also has a set up ready in the event it does go down or my computer breaks after a month... xScoobsx Talk Contribs 07:04, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
Ok i will change it to Neutral as i still think a online hosting one would be better.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 07:19, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. In a perfect world it would be awesome to have a dedicated host, but since it seems the wiki would not fund such a thing, this would be the next best choice. :) xScoobsx Talk Contribs 07:31, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I think that my comment about a Linux server was misinterpreted above. I meant a little box running a Linux server distro, that you own, would work well. I'm a regular user and I approve this message.  TLUL Talk - Contribs 18:09, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

Wouldn't know where to start with that. The server stayed on all night and had no problems. :) xScoobsx Talk Contribs 18:39, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

I talked with TLUL on another server and we cannot figure out what's going on. But there are some other options we can go to for different servers. Quarenon might be able to host a server off of his RS Tools website, or Evil1888 was interested in hosting it also if something failed on my end. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 23:14, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
