Lately in chat, there has been spamming with the emoticons. There is really no use with the emoticons and when used, it causes some intense spam most always. Emoticons aren't any help to the chat, is my opinion. Many Wikians don't realize that they are spamming the chat, and are just trying to get a good laugh to themselves with all the different emoticons. [1] . The current emoticons aren't even any use and make no help with stopping the spam in chat.[2] I say take away the emoticons and start using your words.

  1. ^ Spam. Emoticon Spam (English). 20:39, November 12, 2011 (UTC). "Spamming in chat before realizing it has gone to far."*
  2. ^ Emoticon. Useless Emoticons (English). 20:39, November 12, 2011 (UTC). "This emoticon is no help in chat and is just used to disrupt the chat."*

Support- As Nominator. Hair 20:39, November 12, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - Just disable them if you don't like them. Obviously people will use them for spamming purposes on occasion, the same as with everything else. Absolutely no need to completely remove them. And what do you mean by "it causes intense spam most always"? Ronan Talk 20:45, November 12, 2011 (UTC)

If I disabled the emoticons, there will still be a mass amount of "(emoticons)". And what I meant about "it causes intense spam most always", emoticon spam is usually spammed within the chat alot, when one person starts it. Hair 21:01, November 12, 2011 (UTC)
"If I disabled the emoticons, there will still be a mass amount of (emoticons)". I believe the phrase "wtf" was created for circumstances such as this. Glossing over that oxymoron, however, your second point is equally incorrect. Emoticon spam is no more common an occurrence than any other chat offence, in fact if anything it occurs far less frequently. Your proposal, sir, is silly and nonsensical. Ronan Talk 14:56, November 13, 2011 (UTC)

Support - I don't really like emoticons besides on discussion pages anyway Lol --クールネシトーク 20:42, November 12, 2011 (UTC)

Neutral - Whilst I agree that emoticons can be extremely annoying at times, and can be used for nothing more than spam, the same could also be said the the spacebar, and I have seen the spacebar used more maliciously than emoticons. When they're used responsibly, they can be great fun, but really it's up to the individual user to ensure that they don't abuse the emoticons. Limit them. A few don't hurt, such a smiley and sadface, but if they are getting excessive then I'd support removing some of the other ones. ajr 21:52, November 12, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - We don't remove anon's edit button because it might cut down on vandalism. So lets not ruin the fun for all if a few ruin it. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 23:04, November 12, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - There is nothing wrong with most of the emoticons, in the first example you gave the person should be kicked for spamming and the problem would be fixed. From what I have seen they haven't actually created lots of spam, and people enjoy using them. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 23:29, November 12, 2011 (UTC)

They were kicked by myself for spam, once I realised what was going on. Small recharge gem.png AnselaJonla Slayer-icon.png 23:33, November 12, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - yes, some people can go overboard with the emoticons. And today was a rather extreme instance of that (and well deserving of the kick/ban that resulted), but that does not mean that all users should be stripped of their ability to use emoticons just because some people can't or won't use them in moderation. Limited support - Leave the basic smileys, and maybe the skill icons, and take away everything else. We don't need mario, BA Baracus, or a squirrel or a stop sign. Not when certain users just can't be trusted to stop spamming then when asked to multiple times. Small recharge gem.png AnselaJonla Slayer-icon.png 23:30, November 12, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - I like emoticons. They brighten up messages =D That being said, if someone is spamming emoticons, ask them to stop with a threat of a kick. It usually works. It's not such a big and damaging problem that warrants the removal of emoticons. ɳex undique 00:24, November 13, 2011 (UTC)

Support limiting - We have way too many emoticons available for use. Most of them are completely unnecessary and seem to render themselves to spamming. I say we remove most of them and keep "face" ones. Suppa chuppa Talk 00:30, November 13, 2011 (UTC)

Weak support limiting - Per Suppa chuppa and after looking at the picture, the skill emoticons seem unnecessary, but count this as a weak vote because I'm unfamiliar with Special:Chat.  a proofreader ▸  02:08, November 13, 2011 (UTC)

{{Vote|Oppose}} - Emoticons can portray emotion in a way words cannot (a picture is worth a thousand words) and are appropriate in many situations. By your logic, hunters should not be allowed to use guns, as guns kill people. Actually, people kill people, so we should take away people. There's no reason a minority of spammers or trolls should make everyone lose out. That'd be not letting anons edits the wiki simply because it'd reduce vandalism. Hofmic Talk 06:48, November 13, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - Yes, I am opposing. No, I don't like them. But other users do. Doing this will just pester people, And Wikia has fixed the problem of the emoticons stopping the chat scrolling. I also don't see them overused here. (I'm talking from a chat perspective) Twig Talk 772kZGs.png 06:55, November 13, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - While yes, emoticons can lead to terribad spamming, I see little to no reason to completely remove them. Most users in the chat either don't use them intentionally or, when they do, rarely do so. I say we leave them in for the users that like them and are responsible with them. --Touhou FTW Zaros symbol.png 12:24, November 13, 2011 (UTC) Support Limiting - Today has shown me that some users just can't stop spamming them. I agree with leaving skill icons and trashing the rest. --Touhou FTW Zaros symbol.png 04:24, November 18, 2011 (UTC)

Support limiting - Mister T? A squirrel? Some freaking books? Take away the crap, we are so above such stupid things. The minor spam in the chat today sent me straight here, all we need are the basic smilies. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 04:12, November 18, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - As long as people are warned that spamming emoticons is the same as spamming in general and can lead to offenders getting kicked from the Chat, I see no reason why the emoticons should be removed. [1] N7 Elite (Ready to talk now?) 04:16, November 18, 2011 (UTC)

Closed - Emoticons will be kept, but only those with some relation to RuneScape. ɳex undique 04:27, November 23, 2011 (UTC)
