Forum:Style rule for starts of articles
There have been some discussions going around regarding the opening line of articles, such as Murky Matt (runes), Millie Miller and Charlie the Tramp. There have been a many edit war about which goes first in an article: the name as seen on the tooltip, and the name as told by the NPC. For Millie Miller, this would either be "Millie Miller" or "Millicent Miller".
- Millie Miller, also known as Millicent Miller, ....
- Millicent Miller, known in-game as Millie Miller, ....
What should the "proper way" be to handle these situations? I would also like to call a vote for whether this rule should be in the style guide or not. 13:40, November 24, 2014 (UTC)
#1, and entry in the style guide - As creator of the thread.13:40, November 24, 2014 (UTC)
#1 - First should come the NPC name (tooltip/object name as it were), followed by akas, full names, etc. (lore stuff) This is my choice not just for NPC articles, but also items ("Amulet of fury (t)" and not "Trimmed amulet of fury" should be at the beginning of the article) and anything else people can think of. Another example is Apothecary. The decision of this thread should certainly be added to the style guide. IP126.96.36.199 (talk) 13:58, November 24, 2014 (UTC)
#1 - But (runes) can be removed from the intro sentence on Matt. Parentheticals like that should remain in the
name parameter of infoboxes, but they can be safely removed form lead sentences to keep the prose need and sensical. MolMan 15:02, November 24, 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed. 15:48, November 24, 2014 (UTC)
#1 with exceptions - It depends, honestly. For articles such as Murky Matt, Millie Miller, the Apothecary and Charlie the Tramp, their in-game names should be first. For NPCs such as Reldo who have their in-game name as part of their full name there's no real point in being redundant and saying "Reldo, also known as Reldo Trimmly" instead of just "Reldo Trimmly". I'm not really sure where cases like the ports adventurers would fall, currently we have them as "[name], the [occupation]" instead of "The [occupation], also known as [name]", but personally I'd say the former looks better. 18:37, November 24, 2014 (UTC)

Closed - The additional style rule #1 has been added to RS:STYLE#LEAD. The format should now be "<IGN>, full name <name>", which is based on the original proposal and the suggestion by Mol. If you spot any articles that have problems like the ones mentioned in the proposal, please convert the start of the article to this format. JOEYTJE50TALK pull my finger 20:10, December 10, 2014 (UTC)
