As I'm sure you're all aware, these sponsering pages gaffe has had a bit of an impact on our wiki,

on the updates page, someone's decided to add this:

■Click here to check out the GREATEST RuneScape Guide ever!

RSWiki can't tell you everything. That's why you need AGS Lover's RuneScape Guide - 250+ pages of guides, tips, and secrets! Check the website NOW for samples and real testimonials!

This pretty much explains it in my stead, not only does it insult the wiki (make THEIR site seem BETTER), they're also advertising in the RWT way, I throught these page sponsoring (even if it's just for IPs) is aganist everything we stand for, so please, someone, help get rid of these things.

Best thing we can do is appeal to wikia. Maybe we could have people take screenshots of adds that damage wiki, and then we could have those all be sent to one person, who could contact wikia with them for evaluation/removal. HaloTalk 17:01, November 25, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - These ads are not violating Real World Trading rules. They do not offer in-game items, they are selling a book. This is completely legal. And anyone using the wiki probably knows that everything is here so they won't buy the book.-- Primal full helm.png Bob quest Katagon 2h sword.png 22:30, November 25, 2010 (UTC)

I think he's saying it makes us look bad ("RSWiki can't tell you everything."). Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 22:33, November 25, 2010 (UTC)
No it's not RWTing. But it is making the wiki look stupid. You don't go to a car dealership and see "We don't have the best cars, just some decent ones, but this one 5.7 miles down the road, they got some real nice cars." Same principle. HaloTalk 22:51, November 25, 2010 (UTC)

Suggestion - I know it would be hard and require a lot of work but would it be possible to have all ad requests that have words like "money", "runescape", "bots" etc. have to be assessed and confirmed by a sysop to make sure it doesn't hurt the wiki in any way and doesn't break any of our rules. Again I'm not sure if it is technically possible and if Wikia will let us but I think it will massively cut down the amount of bad ads and bad sponsored pages we have. Wikia will never allow us to review/screen the ads. ʞooɔ 06:10, November 26, 2010 (UTC)
We have been having ad problems so often, have we even asked them since we seem to always have some problem with them? even if only crats can do it but only remove if we want them removed not, not allow them until we allow them. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 06:14, November 26, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Nothing we can do, short of requesting Wikia to allow our admins to filter what ads we want, and that's a long shot. 222 talk 05:31, November 26, 2010 (UTC)

Think time We get those ads because those companies are the ones that want their ads here. It makes sense for them to advertise here. It does not make sense to advertise Toyota, car insurance, homeowners insurance, Vagisil, or Viagra here. These game companies advertise here and pay our bills, which evidently is escaping a lot of our users. We cannot pick and choose who will place their ads here, thats not the way advertising works. --Degenret01 06:21, November 26, 2010 (UTC)

Lol, "Viagra" and "pills". Sorry, had to point it out. 222 talk 06:24, November 26, 2010 (UTC)
Why do all gold/platinum sites have those ads blocked? If we would be independent of wikia, we wouldn't need that much money(each member would as much share as the others, which would almost nothing) so we need less ads so we can block all those ads. I am quite sure that would work if we would leave. But because people don't like that idea, we should just hope wikia allows us to select if we allow ads like other gold/platinum sites. Maybe we should put them under preassure that if they won't let us we will leave? JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 10:03, November 26, 2010 (UTC)
Wikia can't be that desperate for the money since they didn't have those adds before recently therefore why can't they only accept adds that don't hurt the wiki especially since if it hurts the wiki it would affect them negatively anyway. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 10:10, November 26, 2010 (UTC)
wut? please don't place evrything in one scentence, thanksLol. And i really don't know why they can't... Maybe because they are like $_$ or something? They want more money... JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 10:14, November 26, 2010 (UTC)
First of all, AEAE has nothing to do with money-sharing. Secondly, this thread should not be about leaving Wikia. If we want to get serious about that, start another thread. I've talked to people on Wikia's staff, and they said that removing gaming ads was infeasible. ʞooɔ 18:59, November 26, 2010 (UTC)
infeasible because...? JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 11:55, December 6, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Best we can do is ignore those that use the sponsorship page and change all, most or some of the MediaWiki pages related to AdSS. Although that above example of an actual ad is appauling since all of those ads must be approved per MediaWiki:Adss-form-thanks. Personally, I want to change MediaWiki:Adss-ad-header from "External Sponsor Links" to "Corporate Overlord Slanders," MediaWiki:Adss-ad-default-text from "Click here!" to something less "[!]" and MediaWiki:Adss-ad-default-desc to anything less annoying. Ryan PM 18:04, November 26, 2010 (UTC)

I've changed a few of them, though I couldn't come up with a better name for "External Sponsor Links" (unless you think "Advertisements" is better, which I don't). Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 21:16, November 27, 2010 (UTC)

Fixed - Hi all, sorry for the slow reply... Thanksgiving got in the way a bit. These ads are still a bit experimental, so not many people have access to change them yet. This one has been rewritten, and we'll watch for similar wording in the future. Please let me know of any other problems. Thanks -- 20:57, November 27, 2010 (UTC) (sannse, logged out)

Thanks, but who is this? Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 21:16, November 27, 2010 (UTC)
I assumed this as I have only seen sponsor links here and at WoWWiki (previously as Special:Sponsor for much longer on WoWWiki). I have no issue with them if they were made less invasive and not experimented on said wikis without prior consultation (remember the word-ads from Google?). Also, are you "emil" since you signed with an IP? Ryan PM 22:15, November 27, 2010 (UTC)
Oops! Sorry, that was me -- Sannse<staff /> (help forum | blog) 00:06, November 28, 2010 (UTC)
Does this mean we can remove them ourself? What does this mean for us? I don't really understand it.  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Joeytje50 (talk).
Sannse can change the wording because she is a proper Wikia staff member (not helper). None of the admins/'crats have access to decline sponsored page requests. Noone here has any control of that. This is perhaps another reason to move the wiki to an new host. --Gold ore.png Mercifull UK serv.svg (Talk) 12:23, December 6, 2010 (UTC)
mercifull, please comment about moving the wiki to a new host on the changing hosts forum. This is about sponsoring pages, not hosts. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 12:03, December 7, 2010 (UTC)

Closed - The problem has been addressed and is out of our control anyways. HaloTalk 19:55, December 14, 2010 (UTC)
