Yes, another thread on the endless issue of the Slang dictionary. My proposal is to remove all of the non-RuneScape slang on the page(s). We are not Urban Dictionary. If someone wants to find out what "SMD" means, it's unlikely that they'll come to our wiki to find out. However, if someone want to know what "SWH" is (Statius's warhammer), they can look it up here, because it relates to RuneScape. Removing these would give more attention to the slang that actually matters to RuneScape. It would also remove (at least most) of the profanity, which I personally have no problem with, but it is clear that some people do. This in turn would likely remove the need for the "Clean" page, because there would be no profanity in the regular page.

Support - As nominator. ʞooɔ 01:35, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

Support - We also don't really need all of that bad language on our pages, no matter what the context. ajr 01:39, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

Who runs this project, Puritans? The clean page is solution enough for the "bad language"; bowdlerizing our project because some people do not like "bad language" is ridiculous. As for excising non-rs-specific-slang, I understand where you're coming from in terms of project scope. But the page is "a list of informal words and expressions that are commonly used in RuneScape."(emphasis added) The page is an aide for readers who don't understand something they hear in rs; we shouldn't make them go somewhere else (and thereby be deliberately unhelpful) to find an acronym just because it isn't rs-specific. So oppose in toto. (wszx) 01:52, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
That's circular logic. You're opposing changing the current system because it goes against the current system. A similar and equally invalid argument would be "we can't make murder legal because killing people is illegal!" kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar.png 02:11, June 21, 2010 (UTC)
It's not. I'm opposing changing the page's scope because the scope works, and is the one which is best for readers. I cited the current wording of the scope to amplify the point of the succeeding sentence, not to justify why it must not be changed. (wszx) 03:50, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Comment - If a person has no clue what SMD and SWH means, then how will the person know whether they're RuneScape-related?  Tien  01:59, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

If they really wanted to, they could look it up on either UD or the Jagex page on this topic. ajr 02:10, June 21, 2010 (UTC)
You and Psycho answered it quite nicely. ^_^  Tien  02:18, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

Support - I posted something similar a long while ago on the talk page, but it never got any exposure. I thought of starting a thread in the yew grove for it, but I felt like I had been controversial enough already. Anyways, as I suggested on the talk page, we could provide a link to a real internet dictionary like Urban Dictionary, or the one that I liked, since it was more professional, AllAcronyms. We'd need some kind of warning that this wasn't part of the wiki and that it has R-rated language of course. As for how players would be able to tell if it was RS related or not, they could simply search the dictionary! If they don't find it, then there's a 99% chance that its non-RS slang that they'll find on the other website. We simply cannot cover all bases without having a uselessly enormous slang dictionary, so I think by doing this, we're covering all the bases that anyone could reasonably expect us to cover. kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar.png 02:11, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

That's an interesting idea. Another idea (which I'm not proposing, but I do support) would be to simply do away with the Slang dictionary, and add all the slang to redirects such as having SWH redirect to Statius's Warhammer (bad example, as that is already done). That's pretty much what we're doing anyway, with things that we have nickname redirects, but are not found on the Slang page. Because really, how many people are going to look at the Slang dictionary to find out what "SWH" means, and how many are just going to use the search? ʞooɔ 02:22, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Per Psycho's suggestion.  Tien  02:18, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

Support Damn that Robot beating me to an idea! Yea, with a message at the top of the page
"Any terms not found below are likely non RuneScape jargon and can be searched for here" with the links suggested. Win win.--Degenret01 04:00, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

Support We are not a dictionary for the internet. Do you see anyone coming to the Runescape wiki to look up lol because they do not know what it means? This should have been done along time ago 16px‎AtlandyBeer.png 13:54, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

How do you know nobody does that? (wszx) 19:46, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
Actually, the slang dictionary is the 282nd most visited page on the wiki. ajr 19:50, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

Support - It doesn't matter if it's the 1st most visited (it'll never reach their) we still need to clean it up and leave the non-RS slang to urban dictionary*. Username1907 rulez! Dragon 2h sword old.png 15:33, June 22, 2010 (UTC) *and we can do robot's idea.

Support - Pretty sure RuneScape players want to know DFS means Dragonfire shield, not "don't ******* stress" or any of the other possible meanings. I'm a regular user and I approve this message.  TLUL Talk - Contribs 01:23, June 23, 2010 (UTC)

Support - As others said, we should be keeping ALL pages clean with appropriate language.

OpposeSupport (see below) - Have one with dirty terms and one with abbreviations? HaloTalk 07:37, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

Why? That is what we have now 16px‎AtlandyBeer.png 17:23, June 26, 2010 (UTC)
Kind of. I guess I was just kind of throwing it out there. HaloTalk 03:03, July 4, 2010 (UTC)

Okee dokey Non-rs terms are to be removed from the slang dictionary and a link is to be posted to urban (I did some more poking around all and find it unsatisfactory as far as completion goes) kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar.png 03:57, July 4, 2010 (UTC)
