How exactly does the calculator on the skilling pet calculator work?

For example, I've been trying to figure out the best pet% for Ralph to 120. Above the calculator, it states that Thieving is a time-based method unaffected by xp/tick. However, when using it, entering the xp value for a safecrack yields a much higher chance than Prif pickpocketing (~0.7% vs. ~0.04%). Not entering an xp value is not possible.

Does "xp-based" mean it considers total XP gained or xp/action? Are high-xp/tick actions such as safecracking the best method for time-based skills? (This is what the calculator seems to tell you) Sorry if this I'm missing the very obvious answer here.

I believe the confusion comes from the "(XP/Ticks)". It's asking for XP per action OR ticks per action, depending on whether the skill you've chosen is XP-based or tick-based. So you wouldn't enter the XP gained from safecracking, but how many ticks are in one action of safecracking. The more ticks an action takes, the higher the chance of obtaining the pet is (that is the definition of a tick-based skilling pet) - the obvious trade-off is you have less attempts of obtaining the pet per tick.
