Previous discussion can be found here.

Due the the previous forum noti having a concrete proposal to support or oppose, this is here to provide something tangible.

The sitenotice is currently used for:

  • Clan chat announcements, such as kick lists, raffles, etc. as it is currently.
  • Community announcements, such as the RSW family picture we have every year.
  • Ingame events, usually hosted by the events team.

I propose we also allow current and closed discussions that impact our readers. At time of writing this would look something like this:

The discussions will be limited to those that impact our readers noticeably. Anything that they might notice and wonder what has changed, or something they would benefit from being aware of. This does not include discussions about users, bot flags, discussions that do not belong on the Yew Grove, back-end things they won't care about, etc. I will leave what may be included up to common sense for the most part.

In addition to these changes, I propose that we replace Template:Wiki News with [[MediaWiki:Community-corner/message]], as they usually contain the same thing, allowing the sitenotice to be found on the mainpage to reach more readers.

Comment - I think this is a good idea, but I thought this was what we agreed on last time? On a related note, I'm only seeing the new favicon occasionally on new tabs, not all the time. 04ismailjj6 (talk) 11:45, June 25, 2013 (UTC)

I'm not seeing it at all, haha. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 14:50, June 25, 2013 (UTC)
I've tried to update the favicon through ThemeDesigner instead of just uploading the new file. It's probably a caching issue, so have you tried clearing yours? cqm 00:05, 26 Jun 2013 (UTC) (UTC)
No, how do I do this? 04ismailjj6 (talk) 09:25, June 26, 2013 (UTC)
See MediaWiki:Clearyourcache for instructions. cqm 22:31, 3 Jul 2013 (UTC) (UTC)

Support - Aye, this is good. Perhaps reduce height a bit or lower the marges, since I can see this thing become quite long, especially in the narrow hell that is Oasis. To pose a concrete question, where would "X has become an admin" appear, if at all? User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 14:50, June 25, 2013 (UTC)

Do we even announce new admins these days? I don't see Haidro on the current sitenotice or on Template:Wiki News. As for the styling, the padding and width were very basic ideas to give you an idea and to separate it from the rest of the page. It would fit into the spaces already defined by Wiki News on the main page and the sitenotice on RecentChangesText, Community corner and the monobook sitenotice. cqm 00:05, 26 Jun 2013 (UTC) (UTC)
+1 for Haidro not Hairdo. Also, [[RS:NEWS|we do announce new admins]] HaidroH rune.pngEagle feather 3.pngCandle (blood red).png 1XqyDNM.png Crystal triskelion fragment 3.pngHazelmere's signet ring.png 00:34, June 26, 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I figured that would go under 'Other News'. 09:25, June 26, 2013 (UTC)

comment - There was a concrete proposal. Suppa chuppa just smells. MolMan 15:11, June 25, 2013 (UTC)

Oi. Suppa chuppa Talk 19:14, July 7, 2013 (UTC)

Strong support - I think the "Closed discussions" bit is something we really need. The only one concern I have is how many people actually read this notice; but, isn't there an option to send a notification to users that the community messages has been updated? How many people wouldn't just ignore a notification like that though? Ancient talisman.png Oil4 Talk 15:16, June 25, 2013 (UTC)
Everyone hates that brown box. No thanks. MolMan 15:18, June 25, 2013 (UTC)
This is why it's included on the main page. I have never been to community corner and only go to WikiActivity on very rare occasion. I can't even remember the last time I saw a message about community corner being updated. However, when I go to Tip.it. or another fansite, I always end up on the main page. This isn't going to reach those people who google, read the page and leave, but it should reach out to more than it does at the moment. cqm 00:05, 26 Jun 2013 (UTC) (UTC)
But SiteNotice can be seen from every single page (minus S:C), or am I missing the point? User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 06:58, June 26, 2013 (UTC)
umm, yes? 99.999999% of people use Oasis, and there's no real equivalent. cqm 07:40, 26 Jun 2013 (UTC) (UTC)
:A Those poor people. I suppose there is no way to make SN appear on every page, eh? User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 08:21, June 26, 2013 (UTC)
The only way that doesn't break ToU is to stick it at the top of the content area. Looking at how big it might be, that's not a good tradeoff. cqm 09:46, 26 Jun 2013 (UTC) (UTC)

Support - It was quite some time before I discovered the Yew Grove, and I know I'm not alone in that. Links in the SiteNotice might not bring a lot of users into the discussions, but I think it'll get more people reading them, at least. --Farming-icon.png Ms ZuZu Talk Quest icon fixed.png 16:46, June 27, 2013 (UTC)

Support - I wana see something different, for once. Like, Cake.png!!! — Jr Mime (talk) 16:18, July 2, 2013 (UTC)

Support - Per nom. Great idea, needs to happen. Temujin 11:59, July 4, 2013 (UTC)

Closed - The sitenotice may now include details on ongoing/recently finished discussions which may be relevant to and/or impact our readers. Suppa chuppa Talk 19:14, July 7, 2013 (UTC)
