This has been an on going battle lately with images, for me at least. I try to maintain the image transparencies part of the wiki and delete tags that are not needed on images and add the appropriate ones. Something I keep running into is users adding a {{trans}} tag to an image that either already has a {{sd}} tag or obviously needs one.

I don't think that it would be smart to go add a transparency to an image when it will be given a new nontransparent image in HD soon, ultimately wasting time for the users adding transparencies, wasting file space for the wiki (since the file is still stored on the wiki even if it has a new version) and just being unorganized. To me at least, transparency is the last thing you do to an image except maybe cropping if it was not done previously.

So what I am proposing is that if an image has a {{sd}} tag do not add a {{trans}} tag until that image is in HD and ready for the transparency.

This could also turn into a proposal that transparency is to be the last thing tagged on an image.

Comment - What do you want? A policy. I honestly don't think this needs a forum. HaloTalk 17:52, July 30, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - We should have the best quality for the images were currently have. If we don't place transparency tags on a non-transparent SD image, then the image would be slightly inferior than if it had transparency. ~MuzTalk 18:29, July 30, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - I believe that we should put all applicable tags onto images where possible. If there is a non-transparent SD image, it should have both {{sd}} and {{trans}} on it. This ensures that the image is in all applicable maintenance categories, and that any passing user knows what could be improved in the image and can fix it (e.g. SD non-trans image only has sd tag on it - user not noticing non-trans: "oh I can't use HD so I can't improve this image"; sd non-trans has both tags - user: "I can't use HD but I do know how to transparify, so I'll do that!" -basks in happy feeling of helping the wiki-). So yeah. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 19:04, July 30, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - We have to make with what we have. If it means adding transparency to a subpar image, so be it. I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think it's needed. ʞooɔ 21:39, July 30, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - Adding trans to SD images poses no problem. If you're saying it wastes file space, Wikia has zillions of googleplexbytes to use. Wasted effort, well, anyone who wishes to improve images does it voluntarily so it's their own free choice whether to wait for a HD image, or slightly improve a current lower quality version. Also, how is it "unorganised"? seems pretty straightforward to me. 222 talk 00:32, July 31, 2010 (UTC) Oh wait, also, what Gaz said 00:33, July 31, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - The person might not be able to get a hd image but they can make the sd one transparent, which doesn't harm anyone, just if someone uploads a hd one that already has trans then they need to make sure they get rid of the template. Strong Oppose - We have hundreds of sd images, and only a few of them require transparency. It'd take weeks to replace them all, but you can easily transparensifize them. bad_fetustalk 08:18, July 31, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - Adding transparency to an SD image is super easy, so we might as well add transparency to them while we're waiting for an HD image. kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar.png 21:47, August 1, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - As Psycho said, It's very easy. Who knows when that image will be replaced, it should be made transparent in the meantime. --Aburnett(Talk) 21:53, August 1, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - Per Gaz and Cook. I personally think it would make the most sense to have fewer tags. We could have one for images that need to be retaken from the game client, and one for images that need only to be improved in an image editor. This might make things less organized, but I don't really see why we need separate categories for, say, dithered images and JPEG images. Riblet15 05:24, August 2, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - Sometimes, we can't always get HD images within a day of the content's release. If someone uploads a standard detail image of a very rare piece of content, we should be very grateful they did so as we might not see an HD image of it for quite a while. Such a piece of content would include any of the Third-age armour, for example. Waiting for someone to upload an HD version of it would still leave the SD version non-transparent for quite a while, and we don't want that. We have to work with what we have. Per all.
