Hey guys. I've had this idea floating around for awhile now (since I was added to Wikia's Skype conversation), and about a week ago (well, Thursday 4th November) I decided to take the initiative and create a Skype conversation for the RuneScape wiki. At time of writing, we have 20 people in the conversation, so I think its time to bring it here.

Note - This is a text-only conversation. Voice calls are different things, though there is somewhat of an overlap.

Proposal - Make the Wiki Skype conversation official and supported via RS:OS etc.

Other notes...

... that I don't know how to put into my opening thing but I think is useful for everyone (especially those without Skype) to know. Hopefully this will answer some questions before they come up.

Additional questions and such will be added above.

question So in addition to the CC for people ingame, IRC for people on the wiki, and talk pages for messages, this is another way to text chat live?--Degenret01 20:31, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

IRC and the CC are text only, Ventrillo and TS are text and voice chat, and Skype is text, voice chat, and video. Unfortunately, with both Vent and TS, things quickly deteriorated to the point that only the text was used. After that, both were simply shut down as a result of being a needless variation of the CC/IRC. I see the Skype channel (or whatever term Skype uses) as another opportunity to watch the same deterioration, so I'm likely going to (reluctantly) oppose this proposal. Yes. In comparison with the others, it is not controlled by Jagex (unlike the CC), is much more user friendly than IRC, and is off-wiki (like IRC) - video is only supported in a call of 2 people. I did chat to people in the IRC before making it and the reception was largely positive (yes I realise it was for the others too...). The Skype conversation is text-only and will soon be forced text-only by the software, but it provides a good platform for people to get together and make their own smaller groups for voice calls when needed/wanted. In addition I was primarily aiming it at people who already have a Skype account, rather than as a reason for people to make an account (which I suspect was what happened with TS and Vent, and somewhat with IRC - I only made an IRC 'account' for the wiki's channel, though you don't need an account if you don't mind everyone seeing your IP). Neutral, leaning toward Apathy - I just finished talking to Gaz about the channel, so I'm going to summarize some of the points we went over. The CC and the game itself is used for recreational chat and wiki business among users who already know each other in game. The IRC can be used for recreation and wiki business, but is also convenient for users who only communicate through the wiki or users seeking real-time "customer support" from more knowledgeable contributors. With all these purposes filled, is there need for another way for us to communicate? I'm not convinced, considering that one would have to become a member of the skype channel before entering, making the process overly complex. The only reason I can see somebody disliking the IRC is because it makes their IP address public. Therefore, a person interested in using a text-only skype channel would have to not want their IP to be public, does not want to or is unable to add another wikian in-game, and not seeking a convenient venue for communication. I don't think such a person exists, but even if that's true, who are we hurting by making it? Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 22:25, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Even if I did leave it after a very annoyingly large amount of spam. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 22:42, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

The perpetrator of the mass spam the other day has been removed (I expected better of him frankly but whatever). The other spammer (who didn't do as much as the first anyway) and I have 'come to an agreement' - I said "next time he spams he's out", he said "mmk" (or words to that effect). EXTREMELY STRONG support - When both ajr and Gaz were offline, there was mass spam. I actually had to force-shut down Skype to fix my computer. I would very much like spam there to be punishable on the wiki.  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Wicid13 (talk).

Comment - I can no longer start up Skype without it shutting down. Is there a way to clear all history or something when nobody is talking? Wicid13 22:57, November 9, 2010 (UTC) (Forgot to sign up there^)

Oppose - We got an IRC. --中亚人/中亞人 (Chinasian/Jeffwang16) 跟我谈话 02:25, November 10, 2010 (UTC)

Errr... did you read any of the above at all? Or did you just feel like commenting after reading the thread name >_>? - [Pharos] iPhone Edit 02:31, November 10, 2010 (UTC)
Still Oppose - I hate IRL stuff, except for relatives, family, blah. --中亚人/中亞人 (Chinasian/Jeffwang16) 跟我谈话 02:36, November 10, 2010 (UTC)
Why on Earth are you opposing this simply because you don't like it? People like it, people are using it, and it would only help to have another means of community interaction. ajr 03:16, November 10, 2010 (UTC)
So you're opposing because this is "IRL"? You know you don't have to be part of a group call right? Text chat in Skype and calling are different things. It's not like your going to goto the Wikia Inc.'s chat and call group (they have it disabled). Ryan PM 05:21, November 10, 2010 (UTC)
That's like saying I'm a vegetarian so nobody should eat meat.   Swizz Talk   Events!   18:04, November 10, 2010 (UTC)

Weak support - In theory it is a fantastic idea, and I can see it as such, but my gut feeling thinks this will die after its initial period of attention. 222 talk 05:20, November 10, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Although I do like Skype from time to time, I do not like the massive amount of spam that must be loaded whenever I attempt to use it through my iPhone (since IRC999 is kinda buggy for any IRC) eating up a lot of battery time. However, since we've had a Vent and Teamspeak server over the past (both also ran independent of the Wiki), I wonder how long this will last, even though it's not primarily chat. Ryan PM 05:21, November 10, 2010 (UTC)

Support - It seems to be popular and making it official can only do good. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 06:14, November 10, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Skype is really useful for various situations PKing, minigame-ing, Skilling, general talking, and my personal favourite, scamming. And for this reason I must support.   Swizz Talk   Events!   18:04, November 10, 2010 (UTC)

I don't give a damn - Really, it doesn't matter either way. My only concern is that it will fall into disuse like TeamSpeak did. --LiquidTalk 00:34, November 14, 2010 (UTC)

Closed - Skype will now be listed under RS:OFFSITE. --LiquidTalk 23:45, November 17, 2010 (UTC)
