Per Forum:Proposal: Shut down IRC, I would like to get IRC more active again. I know that a consensus has not been reached in the thread, but with the way it is going, I do not think the IRC channel will be shut down, and, at most, just reduced to one channel, as it should, in my opinion, be. I cannot claim that I have been active on IRC much at all since the end of my senior year of high school, through a summer job, and now into college, but I feel that perhaps if the user base is built up again, far more people, including myself, will start joining again. In addition, having the two channels consolidated will be much better for the community as a whole.

I do not have any one particular idea that will magically bring more users into the channel, but I encourage everyone on the wiki to take the time to join the channel, maybe idle a bit if there aren't people speaking when you first join, and soon we can have the active (generally at least 15 people at a time) channel we once had.

One of my main concerns regarding a revival is that many of the people with operator privileges in the channel are no longer active, meaning there are far too few people able to moderate. I would like for any active admins that feel they can run IRC (not commenting on their abilities, but actually on their computer's abilities) to leave a message on my talk page telling me they would like to be a part of this. Instructions on how to register a nickname can be found on the RS:CHAT page. I'll do my best to be around and provide help to those who need it, but leave me a talk page message if you can't seem to get a hold of me on IRC.

I don't know if this really warrants discussion, as I see it as more of an announcement, but before anyone gets the brilliant idea, I refuse to allow IRC to become the clan chat. Because the powers granted to operators are far greater than those one can receive with clan chat ranks, privileges will not be given to those who are not already RuneScape Wiki admins. You may access the IRC channel here. Christine 16:14, September 25, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - I too used to visit the IRC channel, usually daily, but I rarely go there anymore because it's always dead. It would be nice to see IRC active again. Andrew talk 18:14, September 25, 2009 (UTC)

We could always put a temporary recruitment notice on the Sitenotice, telling users that the IRC is always open for chatting, or however it would be said. That would be bound to at least temporarily raise awareness and traffic. Dragon medium helm! Whaddaya know?Chiafriend12Better than rune!Loon is best buttlord 00:23, September 26, 2009 (UTC)

I wouldn't do that, because then we might lose our identity, as random people who just happened to look in the sitenotice come in. However, this yew grove post should attract attention. Butterman62 (talk) 01:37, September 26, 2009 (UTC)
It would be the main Sitenotice, not the Anonnotice. If they have an account here, are they not welcome in our IRC channel? Dragon medium helm! Whaddaya know?Chiafriend12Better than rune!Loon is best buttlord 01:40, September 26, 2009 (UTC)
Of course users are welcome. Sorry, I just assumed that the Sitenotice displayed to everyone, including anonymous users. Butterman62 (talk) 02:04, September 26, 2009 (UTC)

That's how I interpreted it! Sorry, gosh. :o Dragon medium helm! Whaddaya know?Chiafriend12Better than rune!Loon is best buttlord 18:23, September 26, 2009 (UTC)
So the idea here is to bring attention to the IRC with only traffic from the wikia (not any anons via anonnotice)? Does anyone else here happen to see the flaw? The problem in the first place was the lack of interested wikia users, it seems to me like you should not discriminate against users because what you think their presence will do to our identity or spirit, we want people in their talking. As long as they follow the rules anything else they do is really irrelevant. Cap and goggles.pngTEbuddy 20:24, September 26, 2009 (UTC)
I seem to be having trouble with entering IRC. CGI, the type of IRC I use just about all the time, will not load. To make matters worse, Java IRC is slow and incredibly glitchy (I can show proof of what's happened in there if anyone needs to know in order to help me better). Nothing, but Java even connects, however, so I'm currently stuck with slow and glitchy (and unable to use RuneScript). Someone said it was clientside...whatever THAT means... 7kyt1iT.gif --WINE OF GOOD HEALTH (Actually Stinko) 00:17, September 27, 2009 (UTC)
CGI is currently broken, Wikia is working to fix it. - TehKittyCatTalk Wikian-Book 00:28, September 27, 2009 (UTC)
It'd be great if this can become active. Once there are users in there though, are we aiming for chat about RS, RS wiki or both? I remember people used to come in (when it was active) and they'd just ask stupid questions that can be answered in articles. (wat lvl for rune swrd) Lol I plan to become more active here, like I used to be. Although from my past activeness, I don't know if it'll happen. When I'm in IRC, I'll do my best to keep it under control (if I still have admin rights there, at least) Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 09:03, September 27, 2009 (UTC)

Discussion closed - It has been over 80 days since the last comment to this thread, and the general appeal to the community has taken place in terms of what should be done with the IRC channels. Further discussion should be done on a new thread, instead of zombifying this thread. --Robert Horning 16:26, December 16, 2009 (UTC)
