Hiya!

I have had some recent discussions with Gaz about the clan's YouTube channel. I have reviewed the thread which was created by Karlis back in 2009.

Now, after reading the whole thing, I see a generally unanimous decision to abolish and delete the RuneScape Wiki's YouTube account, due to reasons of people misusing the channel, either purposefully or accidentally, to make personal comments that only reflected his/her views, and not necessarily the views of all of the users on the RuneScape Wiki.

I see why it was deleted, and I probably would have voted for it myself, but due to all of the talk about an editor shortage, and the increasing amount of time that people spend on YouTube, I think that reviving a YouTube channel would only do good for the Wiki.

Though I do plan on, if enough support is given and I am granted the right, managing the YouTube channel for the Wiki. I understand that there may have been some skirmishes between some users here and myself, though I would like to point out that I have no false intentions on this matter. I would like to see nothing but good come of this, and I would like to show people on the wiki that I mean no harm.

I would also like to say that my personal YouTube channel (AdamTehSavage) is almost never logged in, and that if I were to manage the YouTube channel, I would be sure to always check in the case I feel it necessary to avoid incidences like that occurring on the previous channel.

I would appreciate all honest comments (hopefully some support) on this, because not only will it be fun but I have a feeling that it will be worthwhile in its intentions to help this wiki.

Revision 1: Gameplan

Here is basically what I plan to do with the channel:

  • Post videos of our events
  • Host some contests with the community
  • Invite YouTubers that may run across us to in-game gatherings, to get them involved with the RSW

^Basically give us another portal to contacting other RuneScapers from around the world.

I plan on using the above three, and more ideas given/found along the way, to improve not only community involvement, but to improve our standing and wealth of knowledge sitewide. The more editors we have may not necessarily be the better, but that is the more people that may help us by contributing and making this Wiki even better than it already is.

Revision 2: Why I Qualify

I believe that I am fit to run the channel because I have, in my opinion, come a ways since my first few weeks on the wiki. I know, when I started, that I may not have made the best decisions in terms of respect and honour to others, and I honestly regret having done so, because that is just one big scar on my reputation here that I will never be able to remove. I think that, not only on the Wiki but IRL as well, I have gained some maturity since January. I know, that in some people's eyes, I may not be the best person here. I know why, and I know that some people do feel that way about me. Not only do I want to try and benefit this wiki in a great way, but I want to try to show that I have the ability to do things like this. My sole intention for this little project of mine, is to be able to get this wiki more involved, and try to get more people editing, so we can be even more productive than before.

Revision 3: I Don't Have to Run It

Just so you know, I don't have to run the channel. I don't even have to be given any authority over it whatsoever. Though I want to be able to at least co-run it, if the majority of you don't trust me doing so, then authority should be given to someone else.

Discussion[edit source]

Question - What would you even do with it? sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 00:13, June 12, 2011 (UTC)

Answer - I would post things like advertisements for people to edit, possibly the occasional event video/information, all sorts of stuff. There's a world of possibilities if we were to open a new one. Adam SavageTalk 00:15, June 12, 2011 (UTC)
I don't think it'd be wise to have a newer member of the wiki run it. Not even the sysops could handle it apparently. I'm thinking this will just become a place of spam and harsh comments with little to no useful information presented. /: sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 00:20, June 12, 2011 (UTC)
I beg to differ! I think that we had put the wrong people under management in the past. I have experience running channels, and will devote a great deal of time into making sure that we have a good channel. As to me being new—I understand that 1,000+ edits and almost 5 months of editing may be new to some, but I have learned a lot about this wiki, and intend to make this Youtube channel as productive as possible. Adam SavageTalk 00:26, June 12, 2011 (UTC)
I would support a "Request for Managing Youtube" thread, that is, if reviving it passes. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 00:35, June 12, 2011 (UTC)
Request for managing YouTube sounds quite good, and I think a lot of people, me included, would oppose you running it because of previous actions. Matt (t) 01:23, June 12, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - Adam, set us out a gameplan, don't just go "yeah, I'll do some stuff, and it'll be cool, n people will send us stuff, and yeah". What are you going to do? When and how often? How do you expect viewers to react with X? Stuff like that. And then we can decide if we want to try again despite how badly it went last time... and THEN we can deside who gets to manage it.

I solemnly swear to do my best to hijack the channel for my own nefarious ET purposes ~ [Pharos] iPhone Edit 01:02, June 12, 2011 (UTC)

I actually think posting videos related to the ET and events is a good idea. Matt (t) 01:23, June 12, 2011 (UTC)
That's actually I could see that could be posted on the channel: just videos of our events. I don't know what else we could possibly put on, advertisements sound like a bad idea, and quite desperate. ɳex undique 01:26, June 12, 2011 (UTC)
^Answers to the Above^ - @Matthew: I already explained that in the above statement. @Pharos: Why the instant trolling? I got an idea to benefit the wiki, and I thought not "Yeah, I'll do some stuff, and it'll be cool, n people will send us stuff, and yeah...", but something more like "I wonder if this'll work" in terms of the word spreading of an editor shortage. I plan on posting videos such as interviews with members, contests with the community, and get-togethers to be organized via YouTube to get people involved in the RSW community. @Rsa: No, not just videos of our events. Videos of what we do, the occasional quest guide or something like that. I don't understand why everyone still thinks that I am only doing this to muck everything up. Adam SavageTalk 02:03, June 12, 2011 (UTC)
We've already had a discussion about video guides, it was opposed. I don't think you're doing this to "muck stuff up", I just don't know what could possibly go on it, save events. ɳex undique 02:06, June 12, 2011 (UTC)
Instant trolling >_>? I tell you how to improve your proposal and you actually take it into account and add it to your proposal and then call it trolling... Up until then, you had barely told us anything and you being being extremely vague, which is why i pointed it out to you with an exaggeration. - [Pharos] 07:43, June 12, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I would like to see the YouTube channel be revived to display events from our wiki to show that we're a community of users rather than a small exclusive group. Adam is a fine editor, but I don't trust him to run the YouTube channel if there is consensus to bring it back. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 9:58 pm, Today (UTC−4)

Oppose - What would go on an RSW youtube channel? If we were of a mind to record and post videos of our events I suspect the ET would have their own youtube channel for it. I'm all for posting videos of me editing the wiki but it really isn't going to hold viewers' attention for long (and not just because I basically don't edit).

Even if we did create a youtube channel you aren't the person to run it in any case. Ardougne cloak 4.png Raging Bull Talk 02:01, June 12, 2011 (UTC)

Why is that? Adam SavageTalk 02:03, June 12, 2011 (UTC)
Being new is one thing, but what you've done in the past and how people have reacted makes it pretty hard for you to be put in a position of such authority, mate. Matt (t) 02:07, June 12, 2011 (UTC)
Gah, keep they aussieness off the wiki, mate >=( JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 02:10, June 12, 2011 (UTC)
@Matthew: I don't really think of heading the YouTube channel as being a position of extreme authority when compared to something like that of an Administrator or Bureaucrat. Adam SavageTalk 02:21, June 12, 2011 (UTC)
You would be representing a formal and official wiki youtube account. You'd have lots of authority. Having the channel for guides/walkthroughs wouldn't happen, as Rsa pointed out. Having it for events, I think having a different channel for the ET would be best. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 02:39, June 12, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I think that the main reason that people don't want you to be in charge of the channel is because, relative to other users here you're pretty nascent. You've been here only 6 months, little compared to others. Look at at our twitter account. They're all admins except for Matthew who is very trusted, has made many edits, and has been here for near a year. ɳex undique 02:21, June 12, 2011 (UTC)

I understand. Adam SavageTalk 02:25, June 12, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I agree that diversifying the methods through which we can communicate with editors, viewers and potential future editors alike is an excellent idea. Adam, I also agree and understand that you wish to flip to a new page in your wiki life, and I commend you for that. However, I think it would be best for the moment to find someone we trust more to run the channel as well as the other reasons my fellow editors have pointed out. Also, I strongly disagree with the ET requiring a separate channel, simply put, that just fragments our YouTube presence unnecessarily, and will bring no benefit to the wiki. I'll be frank, you five are already extremely autonomous from the Wiki, and making a separate channel will be taking it too far. 222 talk 04:43, June 12, 2011 (UTC)

Straying from the topic *cough*, even if the ET did have a presence on youtube, I think it would soon die out, wherever the channel may be. Back on topic, because of this, I don't see a reason for a wiki youtube channel. We don't have enough things to put on it really. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 04:46, June 12, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - We still have a RuneScape Wiki channel managed by User:Chicken7, who seems to be coming back to the wiki slowly. He mentioned 3 months ago that he would revive the channel in due time. The only problem I see with the channel is who is going to make all the videos? I know Chicken7 made all of the videos currently uploaded on the channel, but video editing is time consuming and after awhile one will get bored with it. So, what I am trying to get to is what are you going to make guides/videos of? Can you get enough wikians to aid in this? If you are the only one that is going to tackle this then you may as well stop here. If you can get a sufficient list of wikians that are interested in making videos for the channel then I think we have something. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 07:09, June 12, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - Yes, Scoobs is right; we have a YouTube channel and I have management over that. I did go a little inactive after formation, so didn't get much of a chance to promote it or make many videos. And I am still hardly active enough to edit much, let alone make videos. But, I am happy to continue to run this channel and authorise and upload new videos that others have created if the community feels they can trust me. Another important note is that it was only granted by the community as a trial, that is just there to see the possibilities. Well, it was kind of an open-ended trial. As it's a trial, I do state on the channel page it isn't representative of the wiki. A page I created to coordinate the channel is here. Everyone is still welcome to comment, suggest or create videos! Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 11:16, June 12, 2011 (UTC)

Request for Closure - If a user would like a video uploaded to the channel they can contact Chicken7 who will then upload the video. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 07:33, June 13, 2011 (UTC)

Closed - What Scoobs has said, contact C7 if you want a video uploaded and he will approve it if appropriate and then upload it to the channel. HaloTalk 19:03, June 15, 2011 (UTC)
