It has come to my attention, after taking a brief look through numerous different voting areas of the wiki to see if I needed to add my opinion or not, that the featured articles are dead.

There has been no voting for over a month, and no new suggestions for almost two months. This simply needs to be picked back up and I'm not sure by which means.

My only suggestion would be to return it back to it's old "1 Article wins per month" system... otherwise, I'm flumped for ideas...

Any thoughts? RSN: Warthog Rhys Talk Completionist's cape... Coming soon. 15:13, August 25, 2011 (UTC)

Discussion[edit source]

Comment - Rsa and I have been talking about this, and I really can't think of anything to do that'd revive it. I don't want to kill it because it is a potentially great part of the wiki, but if we keep at this we will never have a new featured article regardless. I was asked to close one the other day as it had been open for months, but only two people commented on it. I've never participated in FA, fyi.

Doing a one article per month thing might help it, but, what if we only get 1 vote on it every month? Then what do we do? How can it be featured if only one person has bothered to nominate it and support it? O_o sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 15:16, August 25, 2011 (UTC)

Perhaps if we pick up advertisement on the main page or elsewhere, it could help? RSN: Warthog Rhys Talk Completionist's cape... Coming soon. 15:18, August 25, 2011 (UTC)

This is a different level of inactivity though... Featured articles are all but dead. It might just be worth allowing admins to select articles when they think they're up to standard and just allowing them to add to the FAs by themselves without consensus. but at least everyone should be able to have an equal vote in deciding what FAs will be. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 19:03, August 25, 2011 (UTC)
I agree with that, but it just seems by going down that path, we're going nowhere... The featured articles are as dead as dead can be at the moment... Unless there's some way we can heavily put advertisement back into features articles... They're going nowhere but to the grave. Hence why I've suggested about the admins just having a selected hand picked choice. It is after all, down to the community to decide this in a thread if they wish.. Ideas - First of all, we should re-instate it as Article of the Month. It is more organised. Then, the page requires a huge cleanup. All the articles are listed before the actual voting. Make archives please. Make it more like RS:FIMG, with the same coding for nominations. Also, we must revise all the other articles and see if they're still worthy to be featured. Finally, put the featured article template AT THE TOP of an article, not at the bottom. This will get more people to read it and go to RS:AOTM. "Hm, what's this? Ooh, it's featured article, must be good, I'll read it. So they are nominated there? Let's take a look..." I hope that helps. I like it, it may be worth trying to get consensus on this if no other ideas come up... Perhaps pushing the FA bubble on the mainpage up a bit could help too. RSN: Warthog Rhys Talk Completionist's cape... Coming soon. 14:51, August 26, 2011 (UTC)

Not the solution - Is a solution needed? Arguably. After all, with something over 60 articles in the rotation there is not expressly a need for more, at least not on an urgent basis. Yes, it would be great if we had more new articles added from time to time, but the lack of new additions isn't really stagnating anything. But going back to Article of the Month does not solve things, in fact it hurts us. Because if only 1 or 2 articles are nominated, and they all suck, one would still win. If you take some time and review the history of this project, you will find many instances where some horrid ass crappily written articles are nominated. Under the AOTM system, one would win. I can't think of a more certain way to put this project on a path to its eventual removal than to try this fix. Oh yea, it was in no way, shape, matter, or form, more organized under the old system. The organization remained the same, only the names and voting format were altered. Currently we have a gold star on featured articles at the top of the page, we could enlarge this or make it more flashy perhaps. But moving the big "Mr Mordaut" box to the top of the page would look unprofessional.
So what is the solution? You. You who want it fixed. you who want more articles. You who say there is a problem. Recognizing a problem and hoping others fix it never ever works. To fix it, you must do so. And the how is really really simple, but maybe not easy. Work. Time, and work. There was a time when user Evil Yanks and myself made this project a priority for ourselves for some months. We spent time reviewing articles, discussing them, picking a good one or two, working on them to fix them up, and then making sure people knew about it. We told people, hey, go look, good article there for you to read, vote if you like it. It didn't take tons of time, but overall it did involve a few dedicated hours each month. That helped the project succeed for a time, and is what is most likely required again. Work on an article, make it good. Really good, not the standard grammatical mess that most articles look like for weeks after they are begun. Fix it up, discuss it with a few people, nominate it, and encourage people to vote. Work will fix the problem, altering a layout or an icon will not.--Degenret01 04:02, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

Didn't mean for a textwall, oh well.--Degenret01 04:02, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

More ideas - Okay, I just discovered that, likely because of this thread, RS:FA seems to have become more popular again. Evidently, it appears to work just fine. Nevertheless, it needs its archives organised in a better way, preferably similar to RS:FIMG. Also, the While Guthix Sleeps delist discussion was recently archived yet I cannot find it anywhere. How's that possible? Now, if I am right and this thread draws more attention to the project it won't last long. RS:FIMG is simply more popular because one remembers an image better than some lines of text. Therefore I'd like to suggest to have an image added to the featured article template on the main page. For example, the chathead for a featured NPC article. Okay, hope this helps more. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 11:41, September 4, 2011 (UTC)

The latter works. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 13:08, September 10, 2011 (UTC)
To be precise, the images are more popular because it is easier to look at a pic than to read and review an article. I am not following you at all on the bit about using a picture. Do you mean for a pic to replace the intro blurb?--Degenret01 13:54, September 10, 2011 (UTC)
No, just to let the intro be accompanied by an image to lure attention. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 15:25, September 10, 2011 (UTC)
Umm yeah I still wouldn't care enough. <.< sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 18:57, September 10, 2011 (UTC)

Support addition of image - It'll make the articles more eye-catching at least, and hopefully draw more attention to FA itself. What if we added a link to the pictures that took you to the list of current nominations? Ronan Talk 15:54, September 10, 2011 (UTC)

Support addition of image - Hopefully it will help draw attention to the articles. Smithing (talk | contribs) 18:55, September 10, 2011 (UTC)

So over "More featured articles" we add an image, sounds okay. Can't hurt anyhow. But not an NPC, RS NPCS all look ******* creepy these days. A small colorful (yes An. spelling, get over it) pic. How about that purple cat?--Degenret01 23:25, September 10, 2011 (UTC)

It should fit within the article. A purple cat in Mi-Gor's intro is just... wrong... User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 06:47, September 11, 2011 (UTC)
So each FA will have its' own respective image to accompany it, one relating to the article?--Degenret01 16:05, September 12, 2011 (UTC)
Every article good enough to be featured has at least one image. It's merely a matter of choosing one to display in the FA. Usually there's one at the top that's most suitable, and every quest has an official image released by Jagex that we use on the quest pages, which fits this. Hofmic Talk 16:14, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

Placement on main page' - So do we move "contents" to underneath, or just move this up to above Wiki News? People who want Wiki news and Events will scroll down for it, and it is a less important feature of ours if our goal is still content. If we have truly switched to a social media website as some say, they will surely oppose moving the ET and wiki news features to underneath.--Degenret01 08:19, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

I think it's fine where it is now, to be honest. Hofmic Talk 23:05, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - This thread seems to be a bit dead now too (haha). There does not seem to be any consensus, except for maybe having the article fragment on the main page include an image on the subject, which I support strongly. I also still support pushing the FA template with Mr Mordaut to the top of the page. Since nobody looks at or past the reference list, it won't be spotted otherwise. Having it at the top with perhaps a more lively colour than Vanstrom-red will attract more viewers. Should be enough changes, the project seems to have been revived already. I think this can be cosed now. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 17:59, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

Closed - There is consensus to add an image to the box where featured articles are, uh, featured on the main page. Interested users are free to add an image. There is no consensus to implement any of the other proposed changes. 222 talk 01:56, September 26, 2011 (UTC)
