BurnettBot TalkContribsEdit count

Basically, I'm looking to move the image replacement I've been doing on my account over to a bot account. I'm now working with pywikipedia bot, which can work so much faster than AWB that my edits will clearly be a bother without a bot flag. At this point, I will be performing tasks like this to keep Special:WantedFiles clear and to keep redlinks off our pages. The bot will run only when I choose to, not on a set schedule, but it will be unsupervised while running. Any questions, ask away. --Aburnett(Talk) 19:01, August 24, 2010 (UTC)

Note: see Forum:Request bot flag for BurnettBot/Sysop tools for the archived discussion on sysopping the bot.

Support - As nom. --Aburnett(Talk) 19:01, August 24, 2010 (UTC)

Question - First, how did you come up with the name? BurnettBott sounds... odd. Second, I've seen your edits like that, and they're not a bother. Why would it need to be done on a bot account? Third, in the sample edit that you provided, what was the difference? I couldn't see any. --LiquidTalk 19:07, August 24, 2010 (UTC)

He added a space to make the filename match the in game name. ʞooɔ 19:11, August 24, 2010 (UTC)
Well, Burnett (Aburnett) and Bot (get it... it's a Bot... Lol). The difference is I was using AWB before which was not a problem because it worked much slower. I just did a little demo that can be seen at Special:Contributions/BurnettBot. Currently the bot is working at about 1/2 speed, so you can imagine how quickly that could overrun the recent changes if I was working on multiple image (which is my goal). Also, if you view these diffs, you should be able to better see the changes. --Aburnett(Talk) 19:13, August 24, 2010 (UTC)
My first question was sarcastic Lol. Anyways, why not just fix the red links in the articles? This sounds like something that we can modify one of our current bots to do. I don't think it requires a new bot to perform. --LiquidTalk 19:18, August 24, 2010 (UTC)
Fixing the rdlinks is what it's doing, and you are absolutly right, we could easily modify an existing bot to perform this task, however I'm more looking to get another bot in the mix so that we have more options and flexibility if needed in the future. Also, our other active bots are active for a reason, they already have tasks assigned to them. There's no need to keep loading up one account when we can easily split up tasks amongst a number of accounts --Aburnett(Talk) 19:23, August 24, 2010 (UTC)
Looking at RS:BOTLIST, we have many inactive bots that we can have do this task. I'm not a big fan of having an overly long bot list, as that can potentiall create issues with whose bot does what, if too many of the tasks overlap. --LiquidTalk 19:26, August 24, 2010 (UTC)
Those bots are inactive, however, because their owners are inactive. Honestly, many of those bots should have their flags removed as they are unlikely to be used again. --Aburnett(Talk) 19:30, August 24, 2010 (UTC)

Question - Would BurnettBot also be doing the file moving, or just the replacement? Also, make sure you capitalize the new filenames when you replace them. I know it's not super-important, but it just looks nicer. Also, how will you decide which files need moving? ʞooɔ 19:11, August 24, 2010 (UTC)

Not at this point, being that that would require admin tools, I'm going to stick to the replacements at this time. Sorry about the caps error, It's hard to see what I'm typing in the cmd window, I'll fix that right quick. As for what needs moving, I wont be deciding (for the most part) as the primary focus of BurnettBot will be clearing up pre-existing redlinks from past moves. Any pages that I do move will be moved in accordance with RS:MOVE and RS:SG. --Aburnett(Talk) 19:19, August 24, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I guess I'd prefer it on another bot, but whatever. HaloTalk 20:00, August 24, 2010 (UTC)

Support - There is no limit to the amount of bots we have, it would serve a purpose, and I trust the brunette to not ruin the wiki while we aren't looking. ajr 22:39, August 24, 2010 (UTC)

Support - I don't see a downside. ʞooɔ 22:42, August 24, 2010 (UTC)

Support - A bot could be useful for this and we can trust him to do this. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 06:56, August 25, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Seriously? Is that the best name you could come up with? bad_fetustalk 11:00, August 25, 2010 (UTC)

-.- --Aburnett(Talk) 17:25, August 25, 2010 (UTC)
Hey its not that bad, 'cos if I made a bot I'd call it BrainBot =D 222 talk 06:56, August 27, 2010 (UTC)

Question - Does it need sysop tools? If not, would you ever conceive of a situation where it would require sysop tools? --LiquidTalk 18:00, August 25, 2010 (UTC)

Sysop tools could be of use, as it would allow for mass file moves, etc. At this point I don't think there's any urgent need for them however. --Aburnett(Talk) 18:44, August 25, 2010 (UTC)

Very weak support - I do approve of the goal, but I would feel much better if the bot was named something else. BurnettBot sounds sketchy. --LiquidTalk 18:45, August 25, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Aburnett has a specific task in mind for his bot and has demonstrated as such, so we shouldn't make the "we don't need another bot" argument to slow it down. Farming cape (t).png Lil cloud 9 Talk 19:17, August 26, 2010 (UTC)

Why make another bot when we could just copy code and run it on a current one? HaloTalk 19:24, August 26, 2010 (UTC)
I think the better question is why does that even matter. Farming cape (t).png Lil cloud 9 Talk 22:32, August 26, 2010 (UTC)
