Right now, we have pics like Smile emoticon.gif or Smileycool.gif for emoticons. See [[MediaWiki:Emoticons]] and Category:Emoticons. They are not copypaste-able to other sites, and now unicode supports emoji for this purpose. Would it make sense to replace some of the images with emoji? This allows them to be compatible with other sites when copy pasting. The current emoticons, in emoji as follows:

  • Anger 😠
  • Blush 😳
  • Confused πŸ˜•
  • Content 😌
  • Cool 😎
  • Crying 😭
  • Frustrated 😠
  • HappyπŸ™‚
  • Hmm πŸ€”
  • Indifferent 😐
  • Laughing πŸ˜„
  • No πŸ‘Ž
  • Peace 🀘
  • Sad ☹️
  • Silly πŸ˜‹
  • Unamused πŸ˜‘
  • Wink πŸ˜‰
  • Yes πŸ‘
  • Wave πŸ™‹
  • Facepalm πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ, πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ, 🀦
  • Santa πŸŽ…

I know some people enjoy the old ones, but for some of them like πŸ™‚, πŸ‘, etc seems no reason not to do so. Thoughts? --Jlun2 (talk) 17:34, November 25, 2016 (UTC)

Discussion

Comment - Half of them just appear as empty squares. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 15:06, November 26, 2016 (UTC)

I guess your browser doesn't support them. What browser are you using? It works fine on chrome, and even on Microsoft Edge. --Jlun2 (talk) 15:30, November 26, 2016 (UTC)
I'm on Chrome for Android and am missing around half a dozen of those proposed. I think it's more down to the underlying OS than anything else as I have a similar problem with whatsapp and other apps. cqm 10:43, 27 Nov 2016 (UTC) (UTC)

Opera, Half ain't loading. The issue is that the amount of browsers that one would have to check to actually see if the Emoji's work on. Twig Talk 772kZGs.png 04:26, November 28, 2016 (UTC)
I think emoji support is OS-related rather than browser-related like onei said, since the ones above render in all browsers on my Mac. --Iiii I I I 05:08, November 28, 2016 (UTC)
Aye. They're rendering on Windows 10, But not on Windows 8. Twig Talk 772kZGs.png 06:41, November 28, 2016 (UTC)
Nor on 7. I'd check XP, but I doubt the outcome will be surprising. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 09:22, November 28, 2016 (UTC)
Ubuntu 16.04 supports almost all of them except the facepalms but they're all just outlines of the emojis without any colour. cqm 20:45, 28 Nov 2016 (UTC) (UTC)
They're supposed to have colour? The ones that render on my computer are also black outlines. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 07:52, November 29, 2016 (UTC)

Opposeish – I don't see why you need to duplicate a function that's built in on most devices (keyboard, emoji picker, etc). There's also obviously a lack of consistent/extensive support for emojis, and leaving image-based emoticons could be a fallback for users on older computers. And in what circumstances are you copy and pasting discussions that are so old they use RuneScape:Emoticons instead of actual unicode emoji? Wouldn't linking to the discussion be better? --Iiii I I I 05:08, November 28, 2016 (UTC)

Maybe I'm misinterpreting your thread. Are you proposing replacing every usage of emoticons with emojis via AWB or something like that, or (what I assumed above) replacing just the code in the templates so that {{=D}} produces 😁? --Iiii I I I 05:27, November 28, 2016 (UTC)
The latter, so the template {{=D}} produces 😁. Not sure how to make it "OS-friendly" however. Sorry for the confusion --Jlun2 (talk) 14:19, November 28, 2016 (UTC)

Comment - Could we at least please get rid of {{(h)}}? User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 09:24, November 28, 2016 (UTC)

Also, why do we not have a {{caek}} (except for the fact not many users use these templates anymore)?!?! OMG! JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 01:04, November 30, 2016 (UTC)

Comment - A possibility is finding a font that supports emoji properly which we could then load for the templates. That wouldn't work for mobile though. cqm 20:45, 28 Nov 2016 (UTC) (UTC)

😁 - I like trains. Also turtles. Also because the support for these things is not very good, I'd say keep it at the sprites for now, and switch to emoji-characters in a while when this stuff works more universally (like, on most commonly used OSes/browsers including mobile). As far as I know, there's no kind of fall-back for when emojis are not supported (except for perhaps some heavy script imports). JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 01:04, November 30, 2016 (UTC)

Question Do we have ever used emoji before if yes, for what purpose? manpaint55 (talk) 14:10, December 2, 2016 (UTC)

Afiak, it was mostly used for talk pages and chat. --Jlun2 (talk) 20:05, December 2, 2016 (UTC)
We've never used emoji because it's a relatively new standard. Most of our emoticons which look like emoji are lifted from the RSOF iirc. If you wanted an example of their usage, there's just shy of 3k uses of {{=)}} and many of those pages will have multiple transclusions per page. cqm 20:45, 2 Dec 2016 (UTC) (UTC)

Oppose - What's the point? Are they (the current emoticons) intended to be copy-pasted to other sites? Achievements Coelacanth0794 Talk Contribs 04:10, December 3, 2016 (UTC)

They are already copypasteable to anywhere; try it: =D / Smile <-- copying this gives "Big smile / Smile" when copying it to some other place. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 01:31, December 5, 2016 (UTC)
As in copy-pasting as an image? Otherwise I'm not sure what you mean Achievements Coelacanth0794 Talk Contribs 01:48, December 5, 2016 (UTC)
No, you don't copypaste the image, but you do copypaste the alt-text for the image. Just try it: select the following piece of text: This is a smiley: =D, this is a smiley: Smile., and then paste it in any plaintext editor (the editbox on this wiki will do). You'll get a text replacing the image when pasting it: "This is a smiley: Big smile, this is a smiley: Smile.". As you can see, =D has been turned into Big smile and Smile has been turned into Smile. So, you can't copypaste the image, but you can copypaste the text that represents the image. PS: The alt-text is chosen automatically by MediaWiki based on the filename, but another alt text can be chosen by using the |alt= "parameter" on file transclusions. For example: [[File:Big smile emoticon.gif|alt=πŸ˜„|title=Big smile]] -> πŸ˜„, which will give the big smile emoji when copypasted to another plaintext location. We could change that as a kind of compromise to this thread's proposal. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 13:46, December 11, 2016 (UTC)

Oppose - Half of them don't even show up on desktop. --dDbvitC.pngScuzzy Betahib8CAd.png 16:04, December 5, 2016 (UTC)

Oppose - They all look like 000
000
to me. --Saftzie (talk) 20:02, December 5, 2016 (UTC)

Oppose - I've checked this thread every now and then on several different computers / browsers. What I've noticed is that the emojis look different on every one of them. Like Saftzie says, sometimes they look like a block of numbers, sometimes they look like colourless smileys (like the good old ALT+NUMPAD_1 smiley: ☺) and other times they look like the yellow smileys you'd expect to get. Because of this very inconsistent result when using smileys, I don't think it's a good idea to use these for now (until it's more standardized / supported by all platforms), and at most setting them to be the |alt=πŸ˜„ value for existing smiley sprites. That way, if you copy a discussion somewhere else, you do get the matching smiley as a character, but the rendering on pages here still works consistently. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 13:58, December 11, 2016 (UTC)

Emoji look different on different devices because that's what the vendor has decided that they look like. It is equivalent to different fonts - the underlying symbol is the same and will copy/paste correctly. Emojipedia has comparisons between major platforms. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 15:27, December 11, 2016 (UTC)

No - while emoji are great, cross-platform and cross-browser support is seriously lacking at this point. Oppose - The unicode emoji shows up fine across all of my browsers and devices, but it is evident that complete support across every device and browser is currently not available. jayden 14:56, December 11, 2016 (UTC)

Just use raw emoji if you care - It'd be nice if the colon syntax was adopted as a standard but oh well, we don't really have control over that. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 15:27, December 11, 2016 (UTC)
