As I'm sure many of us are aware, along with the combat rework will come many new graphical overhauls with things such as character models and animations. As it was with the HD update, it seems that many of our images will become obsolete. This was briefly discussed in the previous thread regarding handling the update, but no specific actions were proposed.

I propose the following things to clarify and to preface:

  • Allow images of new content on the Beta namespace to be transferred over along with the article upon release, but not update images of currently existing content until the actual release. It would get quite messy quite quickly if we allowed images of currently existing content to be updated with their new appearance in the Beta. The best course of action would be, as said in the previous thread, to pretend nothing has changed and continue to use the current images as they are.
  • Sort all images of the beta into a temporary Category:Beta Images. Since we can't put files into a new namespace, a category would serve just as well.
  • Come the update, tag any obsolete images with this modified Template:SD. Just as we do today with outdated images.

With these two things in effect, I believe our imagebase will be prepared for the update along with our articlebase.

Support - As proposer. See below — Enigma 20:06, June 25, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - I think that the more pressing concern is how to name the images that will come in from the beta. We can worry about the obsolescence of our current images when the beta is closer to becoming the main game. Small recharge gem.png AnselaJonla Slayer-icon.png 20:21, June 25, 2012 (UTC)

I knew I forgot something! I was staring at my monitor for 20 minutes trying to remember what my third part of the proposal would be. Thanks... — Enigma 21:22, June 25, 2012 (UTC)

Question - There will be those that want to keep the current images for historical purposes (not me, but they're out there, and they're adamant people). How will we take that into effect once we actually transfer the images per part 1? sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 21:27, June 25, 2012 (UTC)

'ello there bad_fetustalk 00:04, June 26, 2012 (UTC)
Make some kind of bot to merge them, duh. Adventurer's log Wahisietel (Talk) Quest map icon.png 10:23, June 26, 2012 (UTC)
Inevitably, some items/armour will end up in GU. The difference thus shall be there. And, after the update release and nuke of the beta, we should just merge previous image and beta image. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 14:42, June 26, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - as far as naming of images goes, could there be an addition to the policy stating that all images from the beta servers should have (beta) at the end of the file name, so that they are easily identifiable? Small recharge gem.png AnselaJonla Slayer-icon.png 21:51, June 25, 2012 (UTC)

Simple to implement, likely to pass, but difficult to enforce. The fact is that most editors (excluding our +50 or so regular users) simply don't read warnings or notifications. It's a sound idea. Ronan Talk 22:01, June 25, 2012 (UTC)
Image moves are simple enough. Most of them will need moving anyway, judging from past updates (all the people who use a Mac and don't bother changing the default file name when they upload). Small recharge gem.png AnselaJonla Slayer-icon.png 22:03, June 25, 2012 (UTC)

Support first 2 points - Is the new template necessary though? Why not just use [[Template:obfile]]? After all, after all the images have been updated that template will be pretty much useless What I've done Ciphrius Kane Talk 21:56, June 25, 2012 (UTC)

'cuz it's not obsolete, just the model is new. That would be like having to take a new photo of the street I live in because someone has painted their car. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 14:43, June 26, 2012 (UTC)

Support 1 and 2, oppose 3 - Per ciphrius, it's a category designed for older images and SD photos. Adding the EEEEvil-lution of combat into the fray just turns it into the "every image on the wiki" category. Achievements Coelacanth0794 Talk Contribs 22:01, June 25, 2012 (UTC)

Support point one and two - Neutral on third point, but would like to see a new template for this so that things can be prioritized still (SD, then Face, then EoC, then hit point markers). Ryan PM 23:36, June 25, 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure what I was thinking. Per AP below, not to mention we can get all the items immediately from the beta shops. Ryan PM 01:27, June 26, 2012 (UTC)

Support 2. & 3., oppose 1.:

  • Unlike item stats — for which the main game and the Beta will have significant gameplay differences and both versions will coexist for many months — people will expect to be able to upload, place and see the newest version of the equipment. This appearance makes no difference to the article's content, only to show off the most recent version.
  • Images that represent content that existed before the Evolution of Combat can be uploaded from Beta images as a new version. People who still want to see an older version can look in the file's history. This is what happened in the RuneScape HD update, as well as the huge armour update. However, these updates had no beta and were just launched into the game. The Evolution of Combat Beta will be launched into the main game later, allowing both armour looks to coexist. It is only because the Beta equipment images make no gameplay difference that this may be done.
  • Images that represent new content in the Evolution of Combat, such as orbs for mages and the Bandos shield, can be uploaded to their canonical names.

If done this way, it becomes aligned with the expectations of users and does not cause a mess when the images of the Beta need to be merged into the mainspace.

Oppose 1, neutral 2, support 3 - Yes, such template could do, but I was more thinking of a modified version of Template:Facial features, since updated character model is not that a big deal and updating the equipment image of, say, a brass necklace just because of the character model isn't on the top of the list. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 14:42, June 26, 2012 (UTC)

A new proposal

After the discussion, I have decided to amend my original proposal. Some fair points have been made, and in order to achieve a good consensus, I believe a new proposal should be in order. I propose the following changes:

  • Allow updated images of new graphical changes from the beta onto the mainspace, unless the item's appearance is particularly relevent. An example of this would be, say, if for whatever reason, purple Mithril flowers are scrapped in favor of neon green ones in the Beta. We still ought to keep the purple ones on the mainspace until the actual release.
  • Group images from the beta into a temporary category "Category:Beta images". Per above.
  • Tag outdated images with the {{obfile}} template. The pictures need to be taken in the present, anyway. A new template would not be necessary.

Support all - As proposer — Enigma 17:53, July 1, 2012 (UTC)

Partial support 1, oppose others - Beta images of unchanged sets, e.g. Virtus, Bandos or Wizard armour should be merged with the current image. Images of new items, e.g. Batwing, can just be kept the way they are. Images of current items, not relevant to the beta (e.g. ogre wig or something) should not be tagged, as the item in question is not obsolete, only the pose and character model, and the focus is the item. Sure, nobody would mind if the images were to be retaken, but it should not be a priority or even on anyone's to-do-list. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 18:46, July 1, 2012 (UTC)

I support this notion and am too lazy to type the rest out. Achievements Coelacanth0794 Talk Contribs 20:49, August 6, 2012 (UTC)

Question - By "updated images" I suppose you mean weapons/armours? But we know that the character will be different, so are you suggesting replacing the "player wielding -item-" pictures with those from the beta and the new model? More discussion plox - Don't want to close it as no consensus. 222 talk 11:37, July 30, 2012 (UTC)

Closed - There is no consensus to implement any of the suggested points except for a category for Beta images. 222 talk 10:39, August 15, 2012 (UTC)
