Forum:Redlink remover bot
Hi everyone! It is Rswfan again, I am here to ask you this:
Do we need a bot that removes redlinks from pages as it will be tiring work for all us humans to remove all those redlinks so we can clear out our wanted pages category, so i ask you; do we need a bot for this or not?
I asked Quarenon to make a code for the bot and i am still waiting for reply...

Comment - It might have been better to wait for Quarenon to reply. I doubt that such a bot is possible to create. Also, when you say "remove redlinks from pages", do you mean that the bot will remove the link itself or fix the link ? It can't be the former as some redlinks are there because the page has yet to be created, and like I said above, I doubt the latter is possible. I might be mistaken though, as I don't know much about bots. C.ChiamTalk 08:22, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Comment - Yeah I'm wondering. How is the bot gonna fix a red link? Only humans can see what the link has to be corrected to.09:36, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Oppose - Red links shouldn't be removed at all without reason, be it by human or bot. If there's a red link on something, that means we're waiting for somebody to come create an article about it. Butterman62 (talk) 12:21, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Oppose - Per Catcrewser.12:49, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Oppose - No offense, but I don't trust someone with a bot when they don't even know how to use it or anything about writing one. I also don't like that fact that you want someone else to do all the work. Andrew talk 14:49, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Comment - It would be very difficult to "fix" a redlink by changing it to an existing article, and it would also be hard to not remove redlinks that go to articles that should really be created instead. Rswfan, can you be more specific about what the bot actually does when it "removes redlinks from pages"? --Quarenon Talk 20:10, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Oppose - Time and again, I have made links to article of items or NPCs that have yet to be made, only for someone to come by not too long after and remove the link in an attempt to "clear the wanted pages". What good is Special:WantedPages if people just use it as a list of things to get unlinked to? A bot in question would unlink things probably unconditionally. It would do more harm than good. Oppose - All things considered, all this bot would do is malfunction.22:35, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Oppose If the intention is for this to remove links to pages that do not exist, and turn them into ordinary text, this is not a good idea IMO. A wiki is supposed to expand, and if a link has been put in, that implies that the editor thinks an article should be there. It is often appropriate for that to redirect somewhere else (and deciding where to redirect to is not a good task for a bot), but a red link can also be taken as a cue to someone to start an article that simply does not yet exist. Closed - per snowball effect. Red links would be handled manually. A bot that "removes redlinks from pages" will NOT be needed. 04:10, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
