When Gaz Lloyd created Template:CiteNPC, he tested out a new way of showing the "Retrieved" parameter. Instead of showing the full Retrieved 3 August 2021, there would be a red asterisk (*) there instead, which would appear if the reference had not been verified in over a month. This asterisk is not used in any of the other citation templates. Here is a comparison of examples of Template:CiteNews to Template:CiteNPC:

  1. ^ Mod Fnord. Egg-streme management (Easter 2010). RuneScape News. Retrieved 9 April 2010.
  2. ^ Cook's brother, "2009 Thanksgiving event", RuneScape.*

As you can see, the NPC citation is much shorter and simpler, and it gives a link and help hover text.

Proposal: Replace all Retrieved ~~~~~s in citation templates with red asterisks* like the ones Template:CiteNPC uses. White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 01:08, 9 April, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Can't you just be bold, or is this a huge huge task? Ancient talisman.png Oil4 Talk 21:17, 9 April, 2010 (UTC)

Well, here, Gaz said that although this was simpler, it might look more unprofessional, so I'd like to hear more opinions here first. I personally don't think it would be unprofessional. White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 23:58, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

Support - I think it looks better. In fairness the idea was originally Psycho's, I'll give credit where credit's due. I'll happily update the other templates with this code if/when this passes. I could also add a CSS class or two for those who want to change the colour of it (or even hide it altogether)... is that something we want? Sure, but where would you put the hide button? White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 19:19, April 17, 2010 (UTC)
I'd do something like [[RuneScape:Citations|<span class="outdate-ref" style="color:red; font-size:larger;" title="This reference has not been verified - It may be outdated. Click for more information.">*</span>]] in the templates (note the "outdate-ref" class in the span), and then users can add this to their Special:Mypage/monaco.css (or other skin equivalent) .outdate-ref {color:green !important;} to make it green (example), or .outdate-ref {display:none !important;} to hide all outdated reference asterisks. (If someone more CSS savvy could check this I'd be grateful.)
Some asterisks show dates which haven't been verified at all (date= is missing), we could colour those differently and/or give a different class etc etc etc. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 14:40, April 18, 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good. White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 17:26, April 18, 2010 (UTC)

Support - What ever makes things easier. This wiki has evolved so much with coding, I can't keep up many new things =)

Support with addition Create a super template 'Template:RefDate' which includes Gaz's code. Then use this in CiteNews and CiteNPC etc. This means that should we ever want to change the 'cite time', it's 1 location not 10 or whatever. King Runite1 01:06, 18 April, 2010 (UTC)

I was thinking the same, though we have (or are discussing) varying times at which the template category is added - forums are 30 days, but the game guide, which changes less often, is 90 days. We could just use an input for that. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 14:40, April 18, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Should the same be done to Template:Cite web? White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 18:34, 2 May, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Seems handy. Why not? Ajraddatz Talk 17:41, 3 May, 2010 (UTC)

Notice of intent - Unless anyone has a serious concern, I'll go ahead and implement this tomorrow. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 22:23, 27 May, 2010 (UTC)

Will we do the same to Template:Cite web? White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 01:26, May 28, 2010 (UTC)
I was thinking of creating CiteGeneral (was suggested somewhere), with all the same inputs but works like the others (no need for ref tags), put the date thingy on there, and leave Cite web as is (replacing all instances of web with general). Once all occurrences are replaced then we can decide what to do with it (delete as unused, redirect to citegeneral or leave, as those familiar with wikipedia will find it useful as its the standard cite template over there). Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 14:07, May 28, 2010 (UTC)
Okay. And, as long as Template:RefDate, Template:CiteGeneral, and the "outdate-ref" class are created, go ahead and put this consensus into effect. White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 19:15, May 28, 2010 (UTC)

Done - RefDate (using the outdate-ref class) and CiteGeneral have been created, the other reference templates have been updated accordingly. A neutral sysop can close this now Smile Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 23:19, 28 May, 2010 (UTC)
