You may remember the recent Friends list unavailable for some users update of 12 June, which was added to Template:Updates so that it would appear under Recent News on the main page. The notice was subsequently removed from the RS homepage when the problem was sorted out, and the news item was rightly categorised on the wiki under obsolete updates. However, someone then removed it from the updates template, so that it would no longer appear on the main page. I thought that was a bad move and put it back, under the theory that it is still recent news that we have documented, even though it is now obsolete. However, someone else (a different user again) has since removed it again. To my knowledge there is no policy on this, and I think we should have one. My opinion would be that we should have the most recent updates listed, even if they are now obsolete.

In any case, I have created the Obsolete update template, which I intend to go at the top of this kind of update page. Leevclarke talk Max_logo_mini.png bulldog_puppy.png 17:53, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Support - I think the goal is to have our news exactly the same as the RuneScape site's, but yeah, if they aren't updating it with anything new afterward we should keep the obsolete one up.

Support - RS Wiki should be a good archive of events over at RuneScape, regardless of whether Jagex decides to no longer make a big deal out of it. I'm betting we already have precedence of doing this anyway, with our documentation of server blackouts and such. --Quarenon  Talk 01:37, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Support - Archiving such events is a good thing. I myself enjoy reading reports on those sometimes. After all, this wiki exists to provide more then the manual does. Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 02:50, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Support - Per Quarenon. Also, dealing with "obselete news"... maybe we should add something like "fixed" besides news stories (like yesterday's server crash, or when certain sections of the site are down for maitnence) that are only temporary and are then removed from RuneScape's front page. Just a thought. --Beware the underrated. Pikaandpi Berserker Fury!Hit hard or go home. 14:28, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Support - Per Enigma. This would be great to have in effect for recent news(the isp/server issues). - TehKittyCatTalk Wikian-Book 22:57, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Support - Sounds good. It'd be a sort of "Funny things in Runescape website history". Go for it. Zaros symbol.pngChaos Monk Talk SignCoins 250.png 21:51, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Idea for front page

Question - "European Worlds Temporarily Unavailable - Due to a hardware fault at our service provider, all European worlds are currently unavailable. The problem is being worked on and will be fixed as soon as possible. In the meantime, please use one of our other available worlds. Read more... "
It looks so weird on the mainpage! What if people don't click read more... The lil information above informs enough already. It looks like we're not up-to-date on the news. Shall we make the obsolete news on mainpage a lighter font color? See my sandbox. Adult chameleon (automatic).png Anurin Talk · Sign! . 08:35, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

I don't like it being in a lighter font... people who may be just passing through may wonder "Hey, why is this a different colour? What's so different about this news post?". I think we should just put a note, in brackets, in the title of the post, like "fixed", or "obselete". --Beware the underrated. Pikaandpi Berserker Fury!Hit hard or go home. 19:18, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Users might not notice that. Maybe put a sentence above the news box saying "lighter colour = fixed" or something like that? Ancient talisman.png Oil4 Talk 19:19, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Na, they're more likely to miss a note about the lighter colour (which would look quite odd in the box anyway) than the word fixed or obselete in the title of the newspost. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 19:23, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Oh, in the title. I thought you meant put it after the "Read more...". Yes, putting it in the title is probably better than what I suggested. Ancient talisman.png Oil4 Talk 19:33, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
I think this is a good idea. I would suggest using square brackets rather than curved, to make it more distinctive from surrounding text. So something like: European Worlds Temporarily Unavailable [obsolete]. This would only be used on the updates template for the week or two that the update appears there. I think using the word "obsolete" would be preferable to "fixed" or other alternatives, as it would be more consistent with terminology used in relevant categories and templates (and temporary updates would not necessarily refer to technical problems). I think it would be too much to make the word stand out even more by having it in red or in capital letters. How does this look as it is? Leevclarke talk Max_logo_mini.png bulldog_puppy.png 23:44, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Support Pikaandpi, a lighter color was also a bit harder to see. Using descriptive text instead is more accessible. --Quarenon  Talk 00:13, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
Support - Using "[Obsolete]" on temporary updates, but not using a lighter colour. - TehKittyCatTalk Wikian-Book 22:57, 18 July 2009 (UTC)See below
Comment - I honestly just think that news (deleted from the RuneScape website) should not be featured on the front page, having no idea what I am supporting I decided to leave it at that. ShinyUnown T | C | E 23:03, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
Support - I agree, it would be best and less confusing to just not feature the news once it is obsolete. - TehKittyCatTalk Wikian-Book 23:06, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
