Forum:RS Wiki Homepage Remake
These changes may include:
- New title
- Different Background
- new box changes (the coloured boxes containing content)
- New features to the RuneScape Wiki homepage
Changes to the content boxes (maybe they could have a darker colour and have small, jagged rocks sticking out from the edges.
New features to the wiki, maybe have flickering lamps (like the ones from the old runescape login screen, but hanging from the top of the page from chains or hanging on the screen by a lamp holder (I don't know what they're called) and the colour doesn't change) maybe also the lamps could sometimes flicker and die.
and maybe the RuneScape Wiki could play runescape music, there could be an icon on the screen and you tap it then it has a selection of all the runescape music?
Please post your comments and suggestions, would this make the RuneScape Wiki look better? Thanks, Snakeboy311
Strong oppose all: The logo - We can't use the RuneScape logo in the making of RuneScape Wiki logo due to copyright issues.
Background and music - As seen on the polls we've had, several people already have lag issues when using the wiki. These will simply multiply the lag by a huge amount, not to mention they would be quite annoying. What happens when someone opens the mainpage when already playing RuneScape? They will hear two different RuneScape musics at once, which would sound horrible.
Lamps and the darker colours - Personally, I just think they would be extremely ugly. I like the way the mainpage currently looks. bad_fetustalk 14:46, August 3, 2011 (UTC)
Web 101 - Never use music on your website (the Wiki) to play automatically. Don't use dark backgrounds as it is harder for people with certain color blindness to view a webpage.
We can't use explicitly copyrighted material when this is wiki is hosted by a for-profit entity (Wikia Incorporated). This has been tried many times in the past and only once has it succeeded.
The mainpage isn't editable by anyone other than those with sysop group rights and up as to prevent vandalism. We just replaced the logo for the Oasis skin as it took years to do any change whatsoever. The wiki loads slow enough already with the JS Wikia already uses (even though they minify their JS) before ours come into play. The only addition that seems likely to appear at even the slimmest chance is a Yew Grove Module, even then it would obtain very little to no support.
If you want to see something that involves this kind of work, look no further than the [[w:c:assassinscreed|Assassin's Creed Wiki]]. In all, I oppose any changes that involve the above statements. Ryan PM 15:55, August 3, 2011 (UTC)
- We can't use copyrighted material despite being a wiki hosted on the for-profit entity of Wikia Incorporated network. I don't know all the legalities, but it's a pain and there is no benefit or worth to be treading upon for any reason. Ryan PM 16:01, August 3, 2011 (UTC)
Oppose - Also with the music playing, I think that'd also be a copyright violation, and per above16:12, August 3, 2011 (UTC)
Oppose - I was thinking we might want to remove some of those boxes and merge a couple of them into a bigger "News" section, but I don't think any of these changes would be helpful to anyone in the long run. ʞooɔ 18:22, August 3, 2011 (UTC)
Oh look, it's this thread again - This is a horrible, horrible idea. A scrolling background accomplishes nothing whatsoever, and is completely impractical, as is the music player you suggested. What if users are tabbed out using YouTube or something? They would basically be loading extra JS for no purpose if they muted it. Darker colours cause additional strain on the eyes, and flickering colours are a terrible idea - it's ugly and could pose danger to users with epilepsy. Extreme I know, but like they say, prepare for the worst, hope for the best. Real Nub 19:58, August 3, 2011 (UTC)
- No, we never remade the home page when oasis came out, only the logo. 222 talk 06:30, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
- The logo is the same as two years ago... 07:58, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
Oppose - Lag, copyright issues, stupid skin that doesn't allow is anything...07:58, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
- Please read policies before referring to them. RS:SNOW says "and the discussion has lasted for at least one week", and 1 day is not a week. JOEYTJE50TALK pull my finger 19:59, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
Oppose - Large images, flash, etc are a bad idea as they slow the loading and do not in any way help besides the looks, which is questionable whether they'd improve (I'd prefer light colors as well). I'm perfectly happy as it is now. Hofmic Talk 22:21, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
