Wikia has just released the [[w:User blog:Trellar/A new way to promote your wiki|Promote feature]]. "We redesigned the main page of wikia.com to feature some of our most popular and interesting wikis. [...] Promote allows any admin to submit their wiki to be featured on the main page of wikia.com."

We choose up to nine images to represent our wiki, write a description, and submit it to Wikia. For administrators, the page is [[Special:Promote|here]]. For non-administrators, this is what it looks like.

Which images should we use? Right now I think the main image needs to be replaced with something with brighter colors and without HP bars, preferably a landscape image.

Discussion

Images - I think that we need to choose images from our Category:Featured images. I do think choosing a main one is tough as they as rank equally in my own eyes. My top ones would be: File:Chaos Elemental.png, File:While Guthix Sleeps.png, File:Greater dragon.png, File:Saradomin uses SOJ.png, File:Christmas Portal.png, or File:Reef.png. Most of those images show most benefits of the game and how advanced our wiki editors are (with image editing, taking pictures, graphics and other whatnot). Any images in that category should be used though since they have been voted through on RS:FIMG. Hair 02:32, August 30, 2012 (UTC)

Images of just monsters would be boring; while they're nice on the wiki, when it comes to attracting new people I don't think they'll do the job. MolMan 02:34, August 30, 2012 (UTC)
I choose images such as Greater dragon because of it's translucency and fine detail. No, it's not something that entices every single new user because it's a monster but just thinking of this as a showcase (in my mind), that image is pretty impressive. It can attract users who want to learn how to do those things and how to help make more of those images for the wiki (we're volunteers right?). Just showing a finer showcase of images like that can help achieve a higher audience which would be very beneficial to the wiki. Hair 03:16, August 30, 2012 (UTC)
It would be better without a transparent image unless it was one like the Chaos Elemental as it is best to have scenery rather than something that will get squished and for a transparent image, that would look quite awful. Ryan PM 03:36, August 30, 2012 (UTC)
By the way, any transparent images wouldn't be so transparent as this is what happens to all images that are larger than 320px high. That, and all transparent images get a wonderful black background and a lot of trimming. Ryan PM 07:38, August 31, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - Though open to feedback, I'd like to mention these images were not chosen at random; we had conversation in S:C about these images where we attempted to get a diverse set of high quality images. While I don't like what the main image is as of right now, I don't think it should be a landscape image, I'd prefer an image of someone actually playing the game (perhaps a popular activity?). Players would be fine, I just don't want pictures with parts of the interface in them. --Iiii I I I 02:51, August 30, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - RuneScape:Promote lists the necessary information on the text at the very least and how to view the content on the Wikia main page. I think the main image should always have a character in it either bossing or skilling and at least one more for the additional images. I don't see an issue showing the interface as someone who would want to read up on it might want to see past the image and what you or I see when we do play. That's my reasoning behind the Add-9 image. However, I find the tool to be a little buggy when I was attempting to replace Add-1, so it isn't used in Promote at the moment due to upload errors (thus my deletions). Apparently it appears as though any images we submit get re-sized to anything between 480x300px to 480x321px. The display window is set at 480x320px, so any images submitted should be of that size.
(Re-sized versions on main: Main, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) Ryan PM 21:08, August 30, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - I would agree that the interface is not something desirable in the pictures as well as the images should capture some part of gameplay or at the very least an action. I would also try and use images of areas with more up to date graphics, such as Darkmeyer, Runespan or Grotworm Lair. Further more, whilst high-end content is usually the most exciting visually, I think it is important to capture content from across the board. Other than that I would go for a mix of images from quests, minigames, PvM (or PvP), skilling, emotes and DnDs, but remembering that transed images are likely not to be particularly interesting when compared to the other images used on the main wikia site. Transing is for us really, not for advertising about us.

Out of the images currently used, I'm not convinced about those of landscapes, and the one of the Fight Kiln seems a little unconvincing in terms of gameplay. cqm 08:42,30/8/2012 (UTC) (UTC)

Closed - Everyone seems to tacitly agree with the images uploaded. 222 talk 10:23, September 19, 2012 (UTC)
