Some of you may have noticed, the wiki now has a completely redesigned, fresh Community Portal! Az and I (mostly Az) have been working on it for some time, and finally thought it needed to be implemented. Please check it out! This thread is mainly an announcement, but also a chance to comment, suggest and query about the new design.

Our main goal was to make the Community Portal (CP) more popular by making it much more appealing and useful. That was Phase 1, but there is a Phase 2. We need your help to make the new CP popular, by spreading the word and utilising and using its new features. I will also be making other changes, including an addition to the site notice, and making the CP link more prominent in the Welcome notice. The CP should be the place where members of the community can come and find out how they can help out. If everyone makes good use of this, it'll be a success.

Secondly, there are quite a few suggestions that we didn't get time to implement. Below are the suggestions that we planned to implement but didn't get a chance to. (Please add to the list any more suggestions you may have, and strike them when they are done)

  • Colours for new boxes #228899 #bb22ee
  • Projects & WikiGuilds - A box outlining projects/wikiguilds that can be joined that require assistance?
  • Events - A box where the community can list events they have planned themselves, with a link to more info.
  • Featured stubs/Stub of the Month - First discussed at Forum:Stub of the moment. See forum for more ideas/info.
  • Counter Vandalism Unit - Suggested by Telos
  • Category:Speedy deletion candidates - Suggested by Telos
  • more...

Please, if you have any ideas, queries, comments, suggestions, etc, write it here. Wink By the way, if you want to attempt to create one of the above suggestions, be bold and implement it if you think it's pretty neat! Chicken7 >talk 05:15, March 30, 2010 (UTC)

We don't have that page, I looked for it yesterday, and only found it here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_be_a_dick. Anyway it was just for fun, and chicken knows that. JCHQPBucket detail.pngrwojy 05:36, March 30, 2010 (UTC)
We need it, and it's not really a good example to be setting on the Yew Grove. Construction-icon.png Matt is Me / Harmonising / Lvl 3 skils3 Talk Cooking cape (t).png 05:39, March 30, 2010 (UTC)

Support - I love it Twig Talk 772kZGs.png 05:34, March 30, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - 3 things. 1, I'm not offended by the above, but maybe it wasn't the best place for a comment like that Lol. 2, If we created DBAD, it should be DBAN (noob), although this isn't the place for that. 3, no need to support or oppose, as the CP has already been implemented. We're looking for discussion and suggestions. But thanks for the positive feedback. Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 05:40, March 30, 2010 (UTC)

Wonderful - I love the new community portal. Much easier on the eye and more useful, too. I'll probably use the CP a whole lot more with this update. I especially like how RuneScape:Birthdays is actually being used. Great job! Suggestions for improvement: include the Counter Vandalism Unit, Category:Speedy deletion candidates, and perhaps updates on the RSWP. ~ Fire Surge icon.png Sentry Telos Talk  07:58, March 30, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestions; I added 2 of them above. About the RSWP, there is already a box on the main page showing various works from that. Or were you thinking about a "Recent Changes" box of the RSWP with new articles, etc? Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 11:11, March 30, 2010 (UTC)

This page rocks my socks - and perhaps your socks too, or are you barefoot? Air rune.png Tollerach hates SoF Fire rune.png 19:32, March 30, 2010 (UTC)

Love it! - Very colorful and organized. My only small suggestion concerns the numbers left of the charts in each box. They look like red links, which makes the page look a bit incomplete. Maybe it's just me though. OMG!  Tien  21:29, March 30, 2010 (UTC)

Yes check.svgDone - The red numbers on the side have been changed to match the colour of the box they are in. Is that alright, or do you think a solid black would be better? Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 00:11, March 31, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I like it, although the chatheads for the Maintenance and Content sections seem a bit sad. :\ --Iiii I I I 21:33, March 30, 2010 (UTC)

Reply - Lol, you mean they look disappointing-sad or emotional-sad? XD Chicken7 >talk 00:11, March 31, 2010 (UTC)

Looks good - I agree that the tallies on the left shouldn't be red, and maybe just consider getting rid of the right column in favour of wikilinking the title of that box itself? (e.g. just link the text "Yew Grove" instead of a separate "Click Here" way over to the right) Endasil (Talk) @  23:24, March 30, 2010 (UTC)

Reply - Maybe. What about if we made the "Click here" one of those Wikia green buttons, instead of a Wikilink. I've done some testing here. A button stands out much more than a link, and would get more clicks. I'm going to change the "Add an item" link in the noticeboard to a button. What do you guys think? Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 00:11, March 31, 2010 (UTC)
I use Monobook, and I don't see the buttons in your sandbox...   az talk
The required class must not be present in the CSS files for Monobook. The relevant code in wikia-ui.css is:
a.wikia-button,
span.wikia-button a {
	background-color: #093;
	background-image: -moz-linear-gradient(top, #093 20%, #006722 70%);
	background-image: -webkit-gradient(linear, 0% 20%, 0% 70%, from(#093), to(#006722));
	border: 1px solid #beddbe;
	border-radius: 7px;
	box-shadow: 0 1px 0 #2c802c, 0 -1px 0 #2c802c, 1px 0 0 #2c802c, -1px 0 0 #2c802c;
	color: #FFF;
	cursor: pointer;
	display: inline-block;
	font: bold 12px/17px "Lucida Grande", sans-serif;
	height: 17px;
	margin: 0;
	padding: 0 7px;
	text-decoration: none;
	white-space: nowrap;
	-moz-border-radius: 7px;
	-webkit-border-radius: 7px;
	-moz-box-shadow: 0 0 0 1px #2c802c;
	-webkit-box-shadow: 0 1px 0 #2c802c, 0 -1px 0 #2c802c, 1px 0 0 #2c802c, -1px 0 0 #2c802c;
}

/* Big Buttons*/
a.wikia-button.big,
span.wikia-button.big a {
	height: 30px;
	font-size: 15px;
	line-height: 30px;
	padding: 0 15px;
}

/* IE Styles */
a.wikia-button,
span.wikia-button a {
	filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Gradient(GradientType=0, StartColorStr="#FF009933", EndColorStr="#FF006722");
	outline: 1px solid #2c802c\9;
	overflow: visible;
	width: auto;
}

/* Visited, Hover and Active states */
a.wikia-button:visited,
span.wikia-button a:visited {
	color: #FFF;
}

a.wikia-button:hover,
span.wikia-button a:hover {
	text-decoration: none;
	text-shadow: #000 0 1px 1px;
}

a.wikia-button:active,
span.wikia-button a:active {
	color: #FFF;
	background-image: -moz-linear-gradient(top, #006722 20%, #093 70%);
	background-image: -webkit-gradient(linear, 0% 20%, 0% 70%, from(#006722), to(#093));
}
There were some other rules that applied this to all form buttons but I removed them. There are probably other things with the wikia-button class so this would still end up changing other things besides the buttons on RS:CP. Some users have disliked the button styling so I don't know if it would be desirable to restyle all buttons on Monobook. --Quarenon  Talk 17:04, April 1, 2010 (UTC)
I don't use Monaco, so please tell if there is anything special about this button... I don't see why we need complicated CSS to display a button when we could simply upload the Wikia image (or any other button image) for the CP.   az talk   09:39, April 2, 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure. This was added a few weeks ago in this changeset which replaced CSS that used actual button images. It would probably be much easier if we don't use this class. --Quarenon  Talk 14:45, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

Section headers? what to do? - Since I try to stalk certain links on the CP, I used to use the TOC section header to jump to a specific section a lot. I was wondering if there is any way to get a TOC and jump to section links without messing up this nicely formatted page. I don't think we should just stick plain ole section headers in there, but if we could do it somehow without messing up the current layout I'd be all for it. Does anyone know if there's any way to do this??? Air rune.png Tollerach hates SoF Fire rune.png 21:52, April 1, 2010 (UTC)

Yes check.svg The links are located within the intro box. Unlike the TOC, these links needs to be manually updated if new sections are added.   az talk   10:41, April 2, 2010 (UTC)
Actually, you can, using the magic of CSS.
<span style="display: none;">==Insert heading here==</span>

Err thanks, I did it even before Hello71's comments. Notice the okay sign?   az talk   19:56, April 3, 2010 (UTC)
What I meant was, hide the headings and use something like [[MediaWiki:Common.js|custom JavaScript]] to parse the headings that way and let it auto-update. Hello71 15:57, April 4, 2010 (UTC)
IMHO, using JS is waaay over the top, and totally unnecessary. How often do we add/remove sections to the CP?   az talk   17:29, April 7, 2010 (UTC)

9.5/10 - The only way that it could be improved if you made the page all about how I inspire awe in people, though I realise that that is not possible because of AEAE. Unicorn horn dust.png Evil Yanks talk 10:43, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

Aww, can't you make it a perfect 10?   az talk   10:55, April 2, 2010 (UTC)
Because you made such a convincing argument, I shall retract my previous rating and and replace it with a perfect 10/10! Unicorn horn dust.png Evil Yanks talk 10:58, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

I love it - Way better than the old one. Thanks for putting on the Citations box - it will bring more attention to it. White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 23:25, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

Also, I wish we could replace Special:MyHome with this new CP. White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 23:26, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

It would be technically possible to redirect it, but we would probably want to have some way to let people turn off this redirect in case they actually use Special:MyHome. --Quarenon  Talk 23:28, April 2, 2010 (UTC)
Easy. Add this to [[MediaWiki:Common.js]]:
if (wgPageName == "Special:MyHome") { document.write("<script type='text/javascript'>if (disableMyHomeRedirect != true) { location.replace(wgServer + '/wiki/RuneScape:Community_Portal'); }</script>"); }
Then, add
var disableMyHomeRedirect = true; //Disable MyHome Redirect to Community Portal
to Special:MyPage/monaco.js. Hello71 02:19, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - This isn't much of a community portal. It's cluttered with unneeded information like wiki stats, image stats, and other maintenance. Those should go somewhere else. ShinyUnown T | C | E 23:34, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

What do you think should go here? White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 14:50, April 5, 2010 (UTC)
Maybe some things like UOTM and RSWP. ShinyUnown T | C | E 14:52, April 5, 2010 (UTC)
Well, that's already on the Main Page. White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 14:54, April 5, 2010 (UTC)
So is featured images/articles. ShinyUnown T | C | E 15:44, April 5, 2010 (UTC)
It's something that would turn into quite a debate. The Community Portal is for the community editors. The Main Page is for the readers and viewers. The UOTM and RSWP boxes are both things related to the community, really. Things like Featured Articles and Images are more fo viewing and to in effect "show off" our editing skills. I personally think it'd be best to move the RSWP and UotM to the Community Portal. It would not only be more suited there, it'd also be another large step into making the place more active and popular. Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 00:42, April 6, 2010 (UTC)

Idea - How about in the title we have a item that is relevant to said part I.e Wrench to the Maintenance part Twig Talk 772kZGs.png 00:49, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

I'd support that; I never understood why random chatheads were used. White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 12:48, April 11, 2010 (UTC)
If you look at who the chatheads are, they're not random at all. Financial advisor for the grand exchange, street urchin for orphans, Art Critic Jacques for images. I think they should stay. --Aburnett(Talk) 14:18, April 11, 2010 (UTC)
Yes, there were not chosen at random. I chose the NPCs based on their relevance to the section headers. If you click on the images, they link to the NPC articles.   az talk   19:23, April 11, 2010 (UTC)

Update - I added links to all the titles per my suggestion above, but left the "Click here" links in as well so either option works. I really like it this way (though I'd still be fine with removing the "Click here" column or turning them into buttons) since it's a lot more accessible than moving the mouse way over to the side of the screen. Plus, I use a mouseless web browser (Vimperator) so it's very important for me to be able to navigate to a link by typing some of its text. "Click here" doesn't help me at all since I would have to basically use the mouse or toggle through dozens of links to get the one I want. Anyway, what do people think? Is this fine? Endasil (Talk) @  01:42, April 12, 2010 (UTC)

"Click here" links now seem redundant. We should remove them. Chicken?   az talk   17:05, April 12, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Also, in doing the above, I saw what a mess the raw text is right now. That's going to cause maintenance troubles in the future. I might do some work to get all that standard formatting into templates. Endasil (Talk) @  01:47, April 12, 2010 (UTC)

Actually, templates are more complicated to design. I was reluctant to use templates because there were too many variables, and there were limitations by using templates (i.e. the need to use Template:! for |). If you are planning to use templates, just make sure you get all of the formatting specifications (spacing, padding, margin, alignment, etc.) into the templates. Some of these formatting may appear to be similar, but they might have different values.   az talk   17:05, April 12, 2010 (UTC)
Alright maybe it's not worth the effort. This isn't something we should be changing every day, and the noticeboard is wisely transcluded from RuneScape:Community Portal/Noticeboard Endasil (Talk) @  18:40, April 12, 2010 (UTC)

Wootage! - I love it, it looks great! I use it every day now, in fact =D Thanks for creating such a useful tool.
