Hello all,

In maintaining the highest traditions of the wiki, I've proposed an idea on the IRC. This idea has passed the consensus of "yea, sounds cool", "neat" and above all "i dnt no how to edit svgs". OK, so that last one wasn't even related. Anyways, I thought that it would be a good idea for us to have a Portal: namespace enabled, and make nice fancy portal pages. An example of a portal page would be Portal:Dungeoneering, and it would contain links to various pages about the minigame in an aesthetically pleasing fashion.

This idea is a good one for two reasons.

  1. It allows us to make use of sliders (see here for example).
  2. It allows people with no clue as to how the wiki works to be able to go to a portal page and maybe find the information they are looking for easier.

Anyways, the layout of these pages would obviously vary from topic to topic, as they should be designed to reflect their topic. For example, the Zamorak portal would incorporate lots of red while the Saradomin one would use blue.

Please discuss. Ajraddatz 03:49, January 12, 2011 (UTC)

Strong support - Very useful, aesthetically awesome, and provides information in a much easier to access and structured way. 222 talk 03:52, January 12, 2011 (UTC)

Support - It sounds like a great idea! Plus it looks awesome, and makes selected information easier to read. ɳex undique 03:56, January 12, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Looks neat, and it will hopefully help our readers find more information on a similar topic. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 05:23, January 12, 2011 (UTC)

Pending - I like the idea of having portals, but I want to know what will be on them, how they will be more visually appealing than categories, and how we will make sure people get to them. Also, how do we decide what deserves a portal? Do individual quests and skills deserve them, or will we just have them for History, Gods, Skills, Quests, and the like? Also, I'd like to see some sort of mock-up. ʞooɔ 09:54, January 12, 2011 (UTC)

I think this is a good list for portals:
  • Portals(portal for all portals, main portal)
  • Quests
  • Skills
  • Quests
  • Activities(minigames)
  • Tasks(achievements)
  • History
  • Monsters
  • Items
  • GE
  • Bosses
  • Dungeoneering
  • Miscellaneous
What do you think? More can always be added. I think adding one shouldn't need consensus, and work similar to essays(they also don't need consensus to make, and it works too) JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 11:57, January 12, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Per above. In case Cook hasn't seen them already (I'm actually assuming he has, but the following can't hurt), here are some links to portal examples on Wikipedia. In no particular order:

Ok, looking at those portals(and wikipedia:portal:Portals Wink), i think it is best we do it another way. I don't think a portal like that will really make things better, easier or clearer to find. Wikipedia portals is just REALLY much text and then it has to be clearer. I think it is best to have a better balance between images(have to be nice and big images, they have to be inviting) It just has to be inviting, and user friendly. Does anyone mind if i make an example page? JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 13:34, January 12, 2011 (UTC)
Why would anyone mind? We have sandboxes for a reason. :P svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 17:00, January 12, 2011 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you mean by "Wikipedia portals is just REALLY much text and then it has to be clearer." Can you rephrase that? Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 19:46, January 12, 2011 (UTC)

Support - I've seen these at work at other wikis, and they have always been easy to navigate, and look much better than a wall of links. + per aboves. ~MuzTalk 12:54, January 12, 2011 (UTC)

Question - Besides the sliders, which look amazing by the way, what difference do the portals provide beside fancy looking article pages. When I viewed the examples provided by Stelercus, they looked appealing but appeared to only offer information about the subject and helpful links... isn't that what we already provide with the main article?

Be it we create portals that are similar to the list Joey provided, would these replace the article pages they currently hold? Quests would become Portal:Quests? It's redundant to have both, no? 14:29, January 12, 2011 (UTC)
Hadn't really thought of that, tbh. If you looked at some of the portals on Wikipedia, say the Christianity one, you'll notice that there is also an article on Christianity (obviously :P). The portal is more about being a link farm - directing people to the pages related to it that they'll most want to read (we can determine this by looking through the list of most viewed pages, as well as just including things that were recently released) and provide a tiny bit of general information as well. That should work, I think. Ajraddatz 14:57, January 12, 2011 (UTC)
That's good and all, but can't we just place those extra links on the article page under a header called "See Also"? 03:22, January 14, 2011 (UTC)

Support - I've always wondered why we didn't have portals. --Aburnett(Talk) 14:59, January 12, 2011 (UTC)

Conditional support - As long as too many portals aren't created. Having an excessive number of portals would make them just a duplicate of existing categories. Suppa chuppa Talk 18:32, January 12, 2011 (UTC)

What? Are you saying this just to be different? You cannot be serious. 222 talk 00:45, January 13, 2011 (UTC)
Hmm, so... you want a portal for wikipedia on the runescape wiki? i don't see what Christianity or science has to do with runescape... JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 11:56, January 13, 2011 (UTC)
I think he's saying that we should merge runescape mainspace namespace with portal mainspace namespace. bad_fetustalk 14:02, January 13, 2011 (UTC)
I'm going to guess you mean "merge the runescape namespace with the portal namespace." I'm not a grammar nazi, but namespace and mainspace mean completely different things (mainspace is the main namespace). Anyway, I'm also going to guess he's asking that projects/wikiguilds (RSWP, RS:UOL) be moved into the portalspace, which I would strongly oppose on the basis that it doesn't make any sense.
