As we're rethinking the layout of the main page, I'd like to propose having an "On This Day" section on the wiki homepage. Even though not all dates have events listed, a lot do, and the blanks will be filled in as time goes by. Check out the top of my user page to see the prototype (I'm not very good at design, so try to see past my crude attempt at imparting style). The template itself is at User:Leevclarke/Sandbox, and (at the moment) only works for today.

Basically all we need to do to get this up and running is:

 1. Wikify the style;
 2. Move the contents of my sandbox into the Template: namespace, and add it to the main page;
 3. Reformat all the articles on dates to be in the new style as opposed to the old style.

After that, we need only add new events to the relevant articles as they occur (including all RS news, updates, etc.), and the homepage will update itself. We would need a policy on whether articles on dates should contain only "official" RS news, or whether it should include things like Wikifests too. Discuss.  :-) Leevclarke talk Max_logo_mini.png bulldog_puppy.png 22:50, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Support - this would be neat! I can imagine coming onto the wiki and seeing "On this day.. the RuneScape Forums were upgraded, the Desert Treasure quest was released, etc etc.." :D:D:D Andrew talk 22:54, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Oops, I mentioned this idea on a previous (related) thread, and people have already added input there. See Forum:Articles about dates. for the discussion so far, but please add further input on this thread for On This Day. Leevclarke talk Max_logo_mini.png bulldog_puppy.png 00:32, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Support and comment - I would like to change the format a bit:

Year - Whatever update: Update link (without period)

Some updates have exclamations marks ("!") and "..." at the end of the name, so having a period (".") makes no sense. The colon (":") after the "Whatever update" is also important.. otherwise the line makes no sense. =)

Another thing is the chronological sorting. I think we should reverse the years, as all of our Update pages (i.e. Game updates) is in reverse chronological order. I know Wikipedia uses the format proposed by Leevclarke, but we can and should be different.   az talk   03:34, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Agreed with the punctuation guidelines, and we should be following those wherever possible. I have now adjusted the template so that the list appears slightly smaller, but the year still appears in bold, and the list is in full text size when you click through to it. I think formatting in the date articles should be kept to a minimum (no more than we have now), and the template can be used to adjust things like the font size. I also think the only link for each entry should be to the article on the update itself (you'll notice the entry for 19 March does not link to the update at all, which is bad) - further relevant links can be provided in the article on the update. Regarding the order of entries, to me it makes more sense to read a list of events in the order that they happened. However, the Recent News currently on our homepage and the Recent News on the RuneScape homepage are both in reverse order, with newest items at the top. So it seems like this would be more consistent with the way Jagex does things, and I am happy for this to be consensus if other people agree. Support - Anything that puts fresh content onto the front page is certainly worth the effort. Organizing this information and putting it together seems like a Herculean task worthy of the best kudos/barnstar/user of the month recognition, but I do think it would be worth the effort. Try to keep the blurb about each date at a reasonable size so it doesn't dominate the front page. --Robert Horning 16:18, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Support - This looks good and it shows a sample of just how much information is in this wiki. I like the idea. To me reverse cronological order makes sense with the most recent year at the top. Also I definitly think we should put wikifests on there. They are big events for this site and it shows how active of a community we are. Plus its just another chance for people to find out what a wikifest is. Does anyone have any ideas what to do if we have no updates for a specific date? Anyone? I think we need to solve this before going ahead. Air rune.png Tollerach hates SoF Fire rune.png 16:54, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Use an "if" statement to check, and say "Nothing happened today." Go to Starwars Wiki for an example.   az talk   17:13, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Support - I think this would be a really great idea, one of the many things that other RS fansites don't have. The wiki is probably the best place to read about RS history, and this would really reflect our knowledge of it.  Tien  18:27, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Looks much more in the style of the wiki, but will it still have the ability to click through the template itself (which now includes a whole calendar) and to click through the article on the date itself? Although the article on the date (as I envisage it) will not have any new information, it will be displayed full size, which people may find easier to read than the mini-sized teaser as shown on the homepage. See my user page for how I think the functionality should work, except that I think both the date and the year should be linked at the top of the template. And another point that I just thought of - if you click through to article on the date (which consists only of a bulleted list), should the years be linked as I have done for 21 March? Leevclarke talk Max_logo_mini.png bulldog_puppy.png 21:23, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
 • This example will replace the current CTI space in the Main Page. It is likely not a template by itself, but will be hard-coded into the Main Page.
 • I agree that the "years" should be linked.
 • The calendar is unnecessary as we already have one in Category:Dates in RuneScape.
 • Link to the date article has been added, so that users can click through.
 • I'd prefer if "Update" is not capitalised (i.e. "Game update" instead of "Game Update"). =)   az talk   21:38, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Good point about the calendar.  ;-) I think a calendar works much better laid out horizontally as opposed to vertically, so I have replaced it on the Category:Dates in RuneScape page. Would it be appropriate to have the words "On this day..." link there for ease of access? That way people can access the calender much more easily, as a lot of people who browse the site probably don't click through to category lists very often. I agree that the word "update" here should be in lower case (I copied it from the date article as it is now). I have also replaced the hyphens in the bulleted list with en-dashes, as the hyphen is really too short in my opinion. Let me know if you disagree.  ;-) Leevclarke talk Max_logo_mini.png bulldog_puppy.png 22:31, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Link added to calendar in Category:Dates in RuneScape. En-dashes look better, IMO.   az talk   07:06, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Date article format

I've created Template:Calendar so that the calendar can be shown on each date article. Notice that I've included category sorting (|mmdd) in Category:Dates in RuneScape, and the other text in the date article would not appear in the Main page (<noinclude></noinclude>). Hope that helps with navigation and appearance.

<noinclude>
March
21 March is a date in RuneScape. In Gielinor, the date is equivalent to 21 March in the Year 169.

</noinclude><includeonly>
*2009 – Whatever update: Text here
*2008 – Whatever update: Text here
</includeonly>

will show something like this:

March 21 March is a date in RuneScape. In Gielinor, the date is equivalent to 3 Bennath in the Year 169.

 • 2009 – Whatever update: Text here
 • 2008 – Whatever update: Text here

It would be nice if we could include included the equivalent RuneScape dates in the Calendar article. I'm too lazy to do it now. But we could add it in later. 08:41, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

This is looking pretty good. I like what people have contributed. I wanted to bring up protecting the date pages as well since their content will show up directly on the main page. We don't want someone will seemingly good intentions adding thier birthday or when they got a 99. We also don't want someone maliciously posting bad content that will automatically show up on our main page. Also since the year in RS doesn't seem to change (how long has it been 169?) I don't think it makes sense to include that, but the day and the month in RS are interesting bits of info. Air rune.png Tollerach hates SoF Fire rune.png 07:24, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Strong Support. I've also added a calender to the example. Guthix symbol.png Theg721chatAudio Me! I feel the power.

Comment - I've noticed that the 29 February page now exists, but there is nothing on it. Why are we creating date pages if nothing happened on that date? White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 17:41, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

I believe it has something to do with a date calendar, those dates that were not created caused havoc on the wanted page, so people just made them so no red links and no more wanted page clutter. Although I could be wrong. ~MuzTalk 00:34, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
You are right about not creating Wanted pages, Muzzy. (However, they were not created for the calendar, as the date articles were created before I created the calendar.) I don't know the reason why they were created before I modified it, but "empty" date articles are necessary for the "On this day" translusion in the Main Page. =)   az talk   08:41, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Support I believe that this would be a great thing to add. It would just be a small bit of information for those interested. I'm sure I would be looking to see what happened. ~MuzTalk 00:34, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Don't create pages if nothing happened on that date. If you want to avoid redlinks, then just don't make it a link, don't create a blank page. The whole point of wanted pages is to create a page that has information on it. White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 19:48, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
