Hi all. As you know we have a lot of abilities and spells in the game, and in order to link to them in the ideal way we have to use these specific formats which add an icon at the recommended size (24px).

Group Current syntax Result
Ability and Prayer
{{plink|Sunshine|size=24}}
{{plink|Soul Split|size=24}}
Sunshine.png: RS3 Inventory image of SunshineSunshine

Soul Split.png: RS3 Inventory image of Soul SplitSoul Split

Spell
{{iconlink|Exsanguinate|size=24}}
Exsanguinate icon.png Exsanguinate
Potion
{{plink|Powerburst of vitality|pic=Powerburst of vitality (4)}}
Powerburst of vitality.png: RS3 Inventory image of Powerburst of vitalityPowerburst of vitality

As you can see its quite verbose, and its impossible to type from memory. You have to resort to copying these formats across articles in order to get it right. Furthermore, with spells its confusing because you may use the wrong template a couple of times. And with potions you have to manually find the icon that corresponds to the "full bottle" icon and link to it.

I was wondering if we can make an easier template that encompasses all abilities and spells, so that it makes writing PvM guides easier. I was thinking of a unified syntax for all these types of commonly referred to aspects, something like the following:

Group Proposed syntax Result
Ability and Prayer
{{abil|Sunshine}}
{{abil|Soul Split}}
Sunshine.png: RS3 Inventory image of SunshineSunshine

Soul Split.png: RS3 Inventory image of Soul SplitSoul Split

Spell
{{abil|Exsanguinate}}
Exsanguinate icon.png Exsanguinate
Potion
{{abil|Powerburst of vitality}}
Powerburst of vitality.png: RS3 Inventory image of Powerburst of vitalityPowerburst of vitality

I'm not specific on which template should handle it, however my request is as follows:

  1. A single unified syntax (single template)
  2. Handles abilites, prayers, spells and potions
  3. Displays the icon at the correct size
  4. No extra boilerplate to use it

I hope you see the benefit in this. Hoping we can take this forward.

Demo
If you are wondering what the use case is for this, what follows is a small demo taken from The_Zamorakian_Undercity/Strategies:
  1. Gain as much adrenaline and disrupt the runes before Zamorak becomes attackable. Pre-Sunshine.png: RS3 Inventory image of SunshineSunshine and Natural Instinct.png: RS3 Inventory image of Natural InstinctNatural Instinct for damage increase and adrenaline gain.
  2. Devotion.png: RS3 Inventory image of DevotionDevotion the melee attack when Zamorak becomes attackable.
  3. Debilitate.png: RS3 Inventory image of DebilitateDebilitate, Disruption Shield and drink a Powerburst of vitality.png: RS3 Inventory image of Powerburst of vitalityPowerburst of vitality to tank the next four red energy attacks, while damaging Zamorak as much as possible.
  4. If Zamorak still stands after this, revert to Deflect Melee.png: RS3 Inventory image of Deflect MeleeDeflect Melee and repeat until the encounter ends.

Discussion[edit source]

Oppose generally - We use plinks pretty sparingly and I wouldn't like to see their use expanded to covering abilities, prayers, spells, and items. I understand the visuals might be a little more helpful in certain cases, but I think there are more drawbacks thann there are benefits. It makes everything seem bloated, the overusage of icons makes your eyes just gloss over them, and I don't think it looks good textually, especially when you end up having to write something like "Pre-Sunshine.png: RS3 Inventory image of SunshineSunshine". I also don't think they're necessary. What problem does it solve to have a picture of the named potion, especially if it still spells out the potion name afterwards? I know that this isn't the point of your proposal, but if we've started writing guides this way, I don't think we should continue. ɳex undique 02:48, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

Oppose use of link-creating templates in prose and comment - Per Nex, the use of link-creation templates like Template:Plink in prose tend to cause more drawbacks and benefits, and the restriction on using them in prose is outlined in the [[Template:Plink/doc]|doc file]] governing the templates themselves. Of the link creating templates that currently exist, the scenarios are already pretty well defined from a template perspective and would not require a new one to satisfy your use case:

  1. Template:Plink covers instances where the inventory icon file name is the same as the page name with the .png extension, which is often the case with items. There is no resizing that occurs with this template.
  2. Template:Iconlink covers instances where the icon is the same as the page name, with a suffix of icon before the .png extension of the file name. There is no resizing that occurs with this template.
  3. Template:Ability link covers instances where the icon is the same as the page name, with a suffix of icon before the .png extension of the file name. There is an automatic resizing that occurs for 30px.

To accomplish what you're looking for, the following actions would need to be taken based on your use case instead of creating a new link-creating template. Some of these actions I would not support, per prose, while others would actually make sense from a convenience perspective:

  1. Oppose - Modify Template:Ability link to be set at 24px instead of 30 (not sure why 24px is the standard). As I do not support the use of link-creating templates in prose, I don't support this.
  2. Neutral - Move any instances where the Infobox picture uses a _icon.png suffix to remove the suffix to conform to a single standard that can be parsed by the Ability link or Plink template consistently instead of Iconlink. This would primarily be Category:Spells
  3. Support - Create redirects from the potion file names to the largest version of the potion I believe we already do this for things like arrowheads (see File:Bronze_arrowheads.png, so there is a precedent for this.

Oppose - I agree with Nex's points on this one. Creating new templates for this feels like trying to solve a non-problem. We should also not be using {{plink}} in prose. Lava hawk.png BlackHawk (Talk)    12:45, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

Support - if only because it's a nice piece of utility for making navbars. (Big) Support - I think the issue of 'feeling bloated' isn't really that big of a deal since these are being used in '/Strategies' pages and not the base articles themselves. If we started throwing around Protect from Melee.png: RS3 Inventory image of Protect from MeleeProtect from Melee on Zamowhack's page then that's one thing but the people who are viewing these strategy pages are looking for guides for the encounters themselves and visual aids can definitely work wonders especially for those unfamiliar with the abilities/spells/etc. (For example, I don't think I'd bother watching a YouTube video of a guide maker who only mentions an ability without providing a visual icon for what to look for in the ability book.) If someone can read the guide and instantly throw an ability onto their bar without having to open a tab for each ability I think that's a lot better for readability, personally. There are a lot of these ability and spell icons on the Arch-Glacor/Strategies page and I think they do more to help than they do to make the page 'ugly.' Support - I would oppose using these kinds of things in prose too much, but that's not what the suggestion seems to be about. It's just about adding the templates, and that looks all good to me. Thingummywut (talk) 17:41, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
