Forum:New players guide
One of Runescape's weakest points when it comes to attracting new players has been getting them through the absolutely horrible introduction we know as Tutorial Island which is nothing more than a boring grindfest. On top of that, entry into a very busy lumbridge leaves many users in awe of how overwhelming the game can be with little to no instruction. Many of them end up giving up before even getting started.
I have recently re-written the lumbridge new user guide, and renamed it the beginners guide and movied it here . I would appreciate giving this draft some much needed attention in order to make it as complete as possible showing new users that Runescape is not only a grinding game and can be very fun and rewarding. How the hell was that last comment constructive, Joe? I think it was a great revamp, but needs a lot of improvement still.

- You are circular in your logic sir, if you didnt want to start a fight or make it blatantly obvious that you still had ill feelings towards me then you should not have said anything in the first place. If you want to talk, say more on my talk page than you would rather not talk.
I have yet to see any Runescape fansite/wiki have a complete guide on exactly how to start out if you are a new player that doesnt involve fishing/mining/gathering cow hides as none of these things are any fun. hell I got a good friend of mine to start a new charachter with me for the point of writing the guide above and taking screenshots and there was so little direction, I as a player of 6 years did not even know where to start. The point is, new players are intimidated by all of this information and no concrete recommendations of what to do or how to start playing. If you look at other major MMO games and their relevant fansites, you will see that they have large multi-tiered guides on every aspect of new charachter progression and development. I dont know if you have seen the official Jagex beginner guide for lumbridge, but it is absolutely pathetic [http://www.runescape.com/kbase/viewarticle.ws?article_id=2312]. This thread is simply my attempt to breathe air onto the tiny fire I have started. TEbuddy 19:43, 12 April 2009 (UTC)TEbuddy 19:36, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
- I think this is an excellent point to be made here. What is needed is some way to introduce the game to new players without having to plow through the grind. Some aspects like how to start quests, an introduction to the Achievement Diaries, a tutorial on crafting (not even covered on Tutorial Island), and an introduction to the Grand Exchange. There is much that can be noted, and explaining where some of the safe (and unsafe) areas are for new players are. For instance, telling brand new players to stay away from Keli's Stronghold or the Draynor Sewers until you are strong enough to take on the creatures that inhabit those areas. Thanks for both starting this guide, and bringing it to our attention. --Robert Horning 15:28, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
Great guide, wish I had it when I started (took no few than than four new accounts to get used to the game). I think you've got pretty much everything a beginner needs covered there; not much to add, other than maybe a run though with the style guide ("Runescape" -> "RuneScape", capitalising "Grand Exchange", etc etc etc). Also adding 'dangerous' areas to newcomers like Robert said above would be useful. Great stuff.23:11, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
This seems like a nice guide for new users to get their bearings. I want to echo the part about dangerous areas (I almost forgot about those). Don't we all remember how annoying the guards around Dranor could be, even those dark mages by the willow trees. Maybe a list of Danger Zones by combat level (however no highways to them, lol). On a side note, you might want to rename some of those images. The ones that are noob1.png, noob2.png, might turn some people of, idk.21:38, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
