While I was auto-logged out of the wiki, I saw something quite... strange. We appear to have a new background.

Now, I do believe that should be changed back proptly. But I am yet to find anyone able to do that. Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 17:25, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - I do not see it logged out or in. I presume it is another Wikia ad system, I'll ask on IRC. - TehKittyCatTalk Wikian-Book 17:33, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

Well it is a quiet day on IRC, so nothing from staff. - TehKittyCatTalk Wikian-Book 17:48, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

Comment I think it has something to do with that ad, it looks like the ad's background overlapped onto ours. Liam - Beta Tester (talk) 17:49, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

Wikia might be doing page takeover ads, which is what they would look like. - TehKittyCatTalk Wikian-Book 17:53, October 24, 2009 (UTC)
No wondering as to why Jagex doesn't contact us anmore, then. Now that's a throwing weapon!Doucher4000******r4000I'll eat you! 17:55, October 24, 2009 (UTC)
Every time something comes up like this why do you assume this is the reason Jagex doesn't contact us? Cap and goggles.pngTEbuddy 18:22, October 24, 2009 (UTC)
Would you, as a sceptical Jmod even consider contacting some strange website that anyone can edit (and vandalise!) that has page-filling ads? I think most wouldn't. Ancient talisman.png Oil4 Talk 18:27, October 24, 2009 (UTC)
Why does a Jmod have to be skeptical and be mysteriously uninformed about how the internet works? Jagex has the same problem with ads, thats why they have the same system we have for reporting bad ones. Cap and goggles.pngTEbuddy 04:03, October 26, 2009 (UTC)
I've never seen this before, or heard of it....but there was a recent memo that went around, although I didn't read it... anyways...not sure, but this wouldn't be any reason in relation to a contact with Jagex. Anyways, not sure... 18:31, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - How did the CTI go up so much in one day ??? Ancient talisman.png Oil4 Talk 18:52, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - It happens occasionally when an exchange article for an item that's part of the CTI gets vandalized. --Quarenon  Talk 19:24, October 24, 2009 (UTC)
Oh okay. Ancient talisman.png Oil4 Talk 19:26, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

Yay! It's back to normal now! They have had pretty wierds ads of late, remember Evony? *shudder* --Ghrim's book.png WildWings Dragon plateskirt.png}} 02:20, October 25, 2009 (UTC)

The Call of Duty Wiki went through the same thing back when Halo 3: ODST was coming out. Now, for them at least, don't you think that was counterproductive? Posting a huge page-filling advert for the competing series's new game.

The huge ads don't appear in Monobook, and can sometimes appear even when you're logged into Monaco.

These types of ads are probably generated the same way smaller ads are generated: simply by being related to the wiki's topic. They'll probably come and go, and we'll have no control over them. I can't wait until the ads for the new Battletoads game come out. Andrew talk 05:16, October 25, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - It is stuff like this that seriously question Wikia's motives. I am so glad that those involved with Wikipedia drew the line on Jimbo and insisted that no advertisement should take place with Wikimedia projects. Of course, that is why Jimbo started Wikia... as an experiment to see what advertising would do for smaller wiki communities in terms of sustaining their efforts. He thought modest advertising could be introduced within wiki content to not be so obnoxious, but then you wouldn't have to have your "donation" cup out so often to help pay for the server equipment. To operate a site like the RS Wiki it would cost us a couple thousand dollars per year for just network bandwidth and server storage costs even if the technical side was provided "for free" with donated labor. Images like this make me think of moving the whole project off wikia and putting out the donation cup to see if there might be a "better" way to help fund the server costs.

May god help us if the Jagex staff comes our way, looks at the main page, and sees a RWT site with their "logo" plastered behind all of this content. I realize that on-line advertising no longer seems to work with the traditional banner advertisements, but this is getting rediculous. --Robert Horning 15:58, October 25, 2009 (UTC)

That's the thing. We can't do anything about it, it's what keeps us running. It would be nice, though, if we had control over what ads are advertised. — Enigma 16:12, October 25, 2009 (UTC)
Transformers Wiki took that path and I don't think it's one we should take. I like having a close relationship with Wikia staff and other wikis. According to Sannse bad ads slip through the net sometimes, so I'm going to assume this is one of them. Andrew talk 17:44, October 25, 2009 (UTC)
Has anyone bothered to contact staff about this? It seems that many here are taking the attitude that since we don't directly control the ads, we can't do anything. Staff have always been receptive and attentive whenever we've brought an issue to their attention and I'm sure they'll continue to be. Inform staff, give them any info you can, and wait for them to correct it.-- 17:50, October 25, 2009 (UTC)
I strongly agree with Robert. I think 1 small ad on the main page is far enough. Then they got like 3 which squished it up and now this. Contacting staff may be a good idea, although I don't know, is there much they can/are willing to do? Chicken7 >talk 05:23, October 26, 2009 (UTC)

I talked with Sannse for a bit yesterday about the matter. The Asda Story takeover advert was on purpose. The now infamous Evony ad was not. Dragon medium helm! Whaddaya know?Chiafriend12Better than rune!Loon is best buttlord 00:07, October 27, 2009 (UTC)

Discussion Closed - There isn't much we can do about this issue anyway, except for notifying Wikia staff about our dislike of advertisements of this nature. Discussion has also been over for some time, and there is no need to zombify this thread if somebody else comes along to add a comment. --Robert Horning 21:18, December 10, 2009 (UTC)
