I wanted to give you a heads-up about a new sidebar unit we are experimenting with on Wikia. We've been looking again at our Answers websites, and have just redesigned them to have a similar look to other wikis, and to make it easier to match the theme to a similar regular wiki.

Next we would like to point people toward a wiki’s corresponding answers site via a box on the right hand rail of the wiki, similar to the Recent Activity box.

This box is a bit like the the Answers widget we introduced last year, but is simpler and just shows a list of questions recently asked or answered on the corresponding answers site, much like one would expect to see on “Wiki Activity” if one were actually on the answers site. For this test, the box would only show to logged-out users.

We've chosen wikis with plenty of activity and an Answers wiki on the same subject - ut if we've chosen the wrong Answers Wiki to link to please let us know. If you are logged out, and see the “Recent Questions” box, feel free to give us your feedback! --daNASCAT (help forum | blog) 18:28, May 4, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - The answers site doesn't match our look and is totally unnecessary. People with questions can join our clan chat, IRC channel, or wiki chat. --Aburnett(Talk) 20:37, May 4, 2011 (UTC)

Or article talk pages, user talk pages, RuneScape:User Help, our forums, or even PM in-game. =D Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 20:46, May 4, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - Runescape answers is a vandalised, inactive mess. Matt (t) 21:57, May 4, 2011 (UTC)

If this is absolutely needed, can you either link to the main answers site (wikianswers), or we should actually work to develop the runescape.answer site so that it is good. ajr 03:25, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - We can provide answers to questions in 5 minutes through CC, IRC and other help sources on or off wiki faster than someone who trawls through answers for a month, as such it is just detrimental to anyone who wants a proper answer. Also, I haven't seen the rail for months, thank you very much cascading style sheets. 222 talk 06:29, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

I'd rather that people use any of our chats or talk pages to get questions answered. If they even have a question, it usually means our articles need to be updated. But not many people here visit that wiki, so common questions get answered without being included in the proper article, so its not as useful. kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar.png 08:25, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

Link please? I can't find it, I even logged out.--Degenret01 08:47, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

He means the sidebar element... ʞooɔ 10:09, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

Support - I'd like to say that this would be a great opportunity to add a new feature to the wiki that could attract a large public - RuneScape Q&A. Do you have any idea how many questions get asked daily at Yahoo Answers about RuneScape, and how many of them get crappy answers (how long does it take to train Skill X to Level Y)? I agree, these users could visit our IRC and Clan Chat, but do note that 99% of the 1.1M people that visit our site don't even know we have IRC, or a chat, or the CC. If the community would be willing to make an effort to help set-up the RuneScape Answers wiki with proper answers, it could become a great feature - if we are willing to answer those questions. AFAIK no other RuneScape fansite has a Q&A website or any other way to quickly ask questions about RuneScape (aside from forums, but those require registration). And this sidebar element would certainly attract a lot of users. Mark (talk) 12:27, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

There's only one good answer to the question "how long does it take to train Skill X to Level Y": a link to one of our Skill training guides. Any other questions are either useless for 99% of the readers, already mentioned in an article, or should be added to an article. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 13:28, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

Strongly oppose and hate this feature with all my heart and soul - I joined this wiki to help gamers. I hope I do so with what I contribute. But I do not ever want to help them to the point they are doing damn little for themselves. When we make a contribution on an article, that information is now there for all to see and read and be helped by. One edit = helps many, if they are simply unlazy enough to seek it out. This is fitting, as there are a few hundred active contributors for umpteen tens of thousands of people seeking information. We all know that 95% of these questions are going to be the same questions we see asked every single day. "How do I make money" "How do I train x skill" and so forth. When someone asks a question to which an answer is already provided, they are telling you that their time is more valuable than yours. Your is of so little value that you should answer that same question a thousand times rather than have a thousand people each look it up where you already wrote the answer out for them. This feature encourages laziness and basically mocks us, telling us that what we do here on this wiki making and fixing up umpteen thousands of articles is wasting our time, they want the answer now dammit, none if this silly ass making them type in a search bar to find an article to help them. That is much too damn hard.--Degenret01 12:57, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - I agree with Degen. I have seen too many questions of which my answer was a simple link to the rswiki. Also, we are not affilated with the answers wiki, (not in RS:LINKS) so it would actually need community consensus before it's added to our wiki. It just lags the pages even more, it does not help people more than articles, and answering stupid question costs time for our editors, who could as well do something useful instead. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 13:28, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - I was going to withhold judgement until we were used to it, but this is absurd. The questions look awful and reflect poorly upon the community as a whole. There is no information I have seen on the answers site that could not be answered by a 5-second skim of a page right here. The questions are often answered poorly, and the whole thing is pretty much autocratically run by a user who nearly got blocked on here for violating our policies. We are not at all affiliated with the RuneScape Answers Wiki (the only thread I could find was this, which had mostly opposition. I hope you are taking all of this into consideration in realizing that we really don't want this answers box. ʞooɔ 18:22, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

Also, considering that RuneScape Answers Wiki is for the most part inactive and there is only one sysop, people can pretty much vandalize the RuneScape Answers Wiki and have it show up for us. We can't delete the questions, and the best we can do is move them and hope that they update at some point. In the mean time, hundreds if not thousands of people see that crap in the box and they lose some more faith in us. ʞooɔ 18:30, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

Strong oppose - Per all. Matt (t) 21:10, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

Strong oppose - Looks junky and covered up everything on the right side of my page. It now lives hidden beneath my css. Why is this here if we're not even affiliated with that wiki? Makes us look very unprofessional. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 21:14, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - I loathed this feature a year ago back in Monaco, what makes you think I'll want it now? As other editors have pointed out, we don't affiliate ourselves with the respective Answers wiki as we can answer them all in IRC, the FC and CC. I have never liked any of the Wikia Answers due to lack of administration of said sites. This is why we have a Contact Us and Request help links in the Wiki-navigation. Either this be removed by Wikia or we will remove it from view in the appropriate CSS files. Ryan PM 21:33, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

Request early close - I suggest we close this and officially request the element to be removed if nobody but someone who works at Wikia (no offense, but I think you are biased then) supports within a day. This is overwhelming opposition, and the uncontrollable vandalism on the answers wiki is also damaging this wiki. This is not a change we wanted, and the answers site is not even affiliated with us. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 22:10, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

I most certainly am not biased. Mark (talk) 22:15, May 5, 2011 (UTC)
Absolutely no need to close this early, per that forum thing. Also, Mark really isn't biased... ajr 22:18, May 5, 2011 (UTC)
Well, since Ajr conveniently gave me an edit conflict on essentially the same thing I was going to say, I will just second him. --LiquidTalk 22:20, May 5, 2011 (UTC)
Okay then, but atleast it is overwhelming opposition, and it is hurting this wiki too. If we wait the full 7 days before closing this thread, too much damage would already have been done with vandalism on the answers wiki. Action must be taken now. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 22:32, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

I dislike the feature - It's basically tying us to a site that is very inactive with 1 somewhat regular contributor, who will be greatly overwhelmed with by vandalism in the time he's not on leaving him having to fix the information/delete the questions that aren't appropriate rather than answer new questions. tl;dr No thanks. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 22:24, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

You Have Been Heard

It did sadden me a little bit to hear about some of the issues with RuneScape Answers, but after spending a little bit of time today talking with the technical and product teams and looking over the RS Answers site, I fully understand the community concerns about this issue. As a result, I have asked for the feature NOT to be tested here after all and it should not appear any more after this post. --daNASCAT (help forum | blog) 00:08, May 6, 2011 (UTC)

Closed - The issue has been resolved. --LiquidTalk 00:11, May 6, 2011 (UTC)
