New Messages Icon

As with most forums, there is usually a way to tell is a new post has been made. As a forum based Yew Grove, we can also implement this. While there is one currently setup, it is cached for now, but when a new message is posted, the new message icon by default is File:Forum new.gif.

So, the question is, for the setup of the new Yew Grove, would the community like to stay with the default new image icon, or would they like to propose something different.

Open for discussion.

The air rune is fine in my opinion, but if we were to propose a new icon then I think it should be a dark color so it's easily visible.  Tien  17:09, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

That's not the default (which is http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/starter/images/4/4e/Forum_new.gif ) but I sort of thought it fitted to have an air rune as "more talk" ;) But that was just my whimsy, don't let it stop you changing it! -- sannse<staff /> (talk) 18:08, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I knew that was the default. Just wanted to let them know that was the "default" or orginial image choosen. Thanks Sannse! 19:00, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

I suppose it could be: Smoke rune.png. Liam - Beta Tester (talk) 18:16, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

how about Liferune.png cos it's like a ping!Joe Click Here for Awesomeness18:37, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Support - I like the idea. We should definitly have something though as an icon makes Yew Grove easier to use. An air rune is kinda fitting. It brings to mind the noise the teacher makes in the Peanuts cartoons. Air rune.png Tollerach hates SoF Fire rune.png 00:41, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

The current air rune is fine to me, although it should have transparency. - TehKittyCatTalk Wikian-Book 05:20, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Could we have the air rune icon for all the regular threads and another new icon for sticked threads? Just an idea. Rollback crown.svg Spencer (Talk | Edits | Contribs) 01:32, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

This would be awesome: Rune scimitar old.png --Killr833 21:18, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

I don't think that's possible... if it is, it would take someone will great css/js skills. The problem is that the only difference for stickied threads is a category. -- sannse<staff /> (talk) 11:40, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Whatever it is, can it be transparent? The current one isn't, and it's annoying. =| Christine 23:16, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Done.   az talk   03:58, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm going to use Fire rune as the sticky icon. Any changes can be made to [[:Image:Forum sticky.png]].   az talk   04:12, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
For the "new message" icon, would something like Letter (Rocking Out).png be more suitable? For the sticky icon, how about something like Willow branch.png, because a willow branch is a bit like a stick, and therefore could be described as "stick-y". Well I love a good pun.  :-) Or how about something that is sticky, like Liquid honey.png (liquid honey). Leevclarke talk Max_logo_mini.png bulldog_puppy.png 01:08, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
I like those images, but I think the size has to be reduced to about 20x20pixels.   az talk   02:46, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
How about this for "sticky"? Spider on stick (raw).png   az talk   17:24, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
I like it! 20:07, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
I like the honey idea, or maybe swamp tar. Karlis (talk) (contribs) 21:17, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Comment - Is there any way to make an icon meaning that the forum has been archived? White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 13:46, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

If I'm not mistaken, archived posts do not appear in Forum:Yew Grove.   az talk   18:15, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
They continue as regular threads. After inactivity they will slowly remove them selves from the front on the list, but the whole forum is basically it's own archive. 02:51, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
Is there any way to automatically take the air rune and bold off the title? White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 03:09, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
After 7 days (7 is default; we can change if we want to), the icon (air rune) and bold is removed automatically, as it is no longer a new thread.   az talk   06:15, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
And what about when you edit a forum, but then go back to the index and see it is still marked as having new messages? Can that be changed? White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 12:48, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

I dont think so, as this is hardcoded into the DPLforum extension. As far as I know, it is only after n days (parameter: |newdays=number; default is 7) of inactivity that the icon and bold disappears. Any reason why you would want to change it? Just curious...   az talk   17:54, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Because it's more helpful if it indicates that there are unread messages, rather than messages posted in the last week (that's far too long anyway). Also, I miss the runes - they may have had less symbolism, but at least they didn't make the list of threads look aesthetically displeasing. -Byte_Master bytesig2.png bytesig3.png 20:36, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
I agree. White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 21:14, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
The parameter details for the forums can be found at DPLforum extension. The number of days can be reduced, but I don't know if unread messages can be indicated in the forum. This involves an user's cache, and other JavaScript or CSS mumbo-jumbo which I do not want to delve into. The "|timestamp=false" parameter sounds interesting, try it out if you like.   az talk   10:59, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
I miss the runes too although I may be biased because take a look at my sig...Air rune.png Tollerach hates SoF Fire rune.png 03:15, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Ditto. I hate the new new messages icon. The air runes were heaps better IMO. ~ Fire Surge icon.png Sentry Telos Talk  06:30, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
I agree also. Then new icons are much worse compared to the runes.--Quest point hood.png Bigm2793Talk Quest point cape.png 09:44, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Yeah. The runes as icons were better than the current ones. The new ones are just plain random. I strongly think we should have the runes instead. Dragon medium helm! Whaddaya know?Chiafriend12Better than rune!Loon is best buttlord 00:17, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

For those interested in changing the icons back, just use these links:

Shouldn't someone protect them as anyone could change it to whatever. Joe Click Here for Awesomeness13:45, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
